Ok, im a lvl 12 necro and i was in a rift group in thestra today. We were a 12 sorc, 11 cleric, 12 necro(me), 14 war, 10 or 11 rogue, and a 12 psionist. We were fighting lvl 11-13 mobs and i could hardly even get my instant cast dots off on the mob before it died. I really felt like a 3rd wheel and was wondering if mobs will get tougher and left me get at least a bone spike off. I dont intend on changing my class because im having loads of fun on my necro. Thanks in advance!

I don't even have a necro, but I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is yes. It is sorta of funny because I remember thinking the exact same thing when I first started a Warlock in WoW. The rest of the group killed things so fast that I didn't feel needed. I quit and started a warrior. Later on in raids and such when I saw how the warlocks had developed I could better appreciate their style of killing.

It really depends on the mobs. If you are in a full group and fighting 2-3 dots at or below your lvl then you'll be hard pressed to really do much quick enough before it's dead. Now you get into a full group and start fighting 4 dots your lvl and a little higher then you will have time and want to use your dots and debuffs.

As an illustrative example last night had pretty much a full group of lvl 20's fighting 4 dot lvl 21's and the fight would last about 20-30 secs.

Hope this answers your question somewhat :)

I am a level 15 Necro. I can tell you that playing this guy is great. Now, for the problem your having. If they go down fast don't worry about doting them. Just send in pet, nuke and debuff. Rinse and repeat. And make sure after each kill to use your spell to get your mana back (sorry power) to minimize down time. I have yet to run out of power just nuking and not using any dots because of the problem you just mentioned.

+1. I usually throw up my (green hand spell. I can't remember the name...) since it's instant, throw the pet in, and get a bonespike off. If the mobs not dead, I'll melee since it almost definitely has very low health.

When I'm crawling a dungeon, I use all dots and it works like a charm. Once you start doing groupable 4 dots, you'll realize that you're class is actually pretty incredible.

Started a Necro this week. Though I have been playing since Beta 4, my only venture into the Arcane class was a brief experiment with a Druid.

So far, I absolutely love this class. We were in a 3-man group last night grinding on the Spiders just south of Tursh. We had a DRK-10, SHM-9 and myself NEC-8. The level 10-11 spiders would drop pretty quick, basically all I'd do is Bone Spike while the DRK beat the living heck out of the spider.

The fun was killing the Lvl 13 Boss Spider whenever he spawned. He was a 3 dot/red to me, but we got so that we had a good system for killing him. The SHM would root him, the DRK would debuff/DoT and then go in for the attack. I'd hit Blight and Torment as soon as the DRK started swinging, and then a few seconds later cast Pestilence for the bigger DoT and send in my pet. After that it was just a matter of watching for adds (occaisionally a lvl 7 or 8 dog would try to join the action), refreshing my DoTs, and an occaisional Bone Spike if my mana was in good shape.

If we got an add, it was my job to deal with the add, since they were usually only Lvl 7/8 dogs. For those, I'd Fear, Torment, and retarget the pet on the add. Usually this would be enough to keep them occupied. If necessary, I'd heal my pet or pop a Bone Spike.

Didn't have to lifetap much at all since the only time I usually took damage was if I had to heal pet, and DRK are REAL good at holding aggro, but I'd finish by draing mana from any kills to reduce our downtime (or if we killed an add, I'd suck it dry).

If you add that all up, it's twice as much mana as a typical lvl 8 NEC actually has, so obviously it was very situational as to what/when/how much, but that was the fun. We killed that big spider a number of times, simply because it was fun. It also helped us perfect our tactics. Tonight we're going hunting for more 3-4 dot mobs.

Can't wait for Lvl 10 (and 14, and 18, and....).

Sounds like a good time, man. Level 10 is career changing. As is 14!

To give you a better idea. Last night our tank had to leave and we were in the Gulch on Qualia. I had a Druid who was able to ?harmonize? mobs if we had more then 1 for pulling.

I would snare pull it, wait till it moved away from the other mob and send pet. Click on pet sneer icon and pet's weapon graft (it was poisonous claw III). Once pet got aggro the whole group (rogue, Sorcerer and druid, and we had a shaman) would open up and kill the mob. My pet was able to keep aggro until it was below 50% but then we were opening up so fast that mob went down quick. We did that again with next mob.

Well, we did amazing well and even was able to handle adds since one of the classes (forget which) had a really high snare % spell, and I would then fear it (and it was walking sllooooowwwwlyyyy away) and we would jump it after we finished killing one mob.

I am level 16 now and these mobs were were doing were 16-17 3dots. We even took on a level 17 4 dot named with my pet and we were fine.

Thanks Noldor, made Lvl 10 yesterday with the same group. OMG you were right about (un)life changing. I'm probably gonna make this my main. So far our guild is a little light on Arcane casters (One SOR, One PSI, and now my NEC) as opposed to DPS and Healers, while the Tanks (2-DRKs) are few in numbers as well.

think you get some dot upgrades. lvl 14 is great too, you can turn corpses into pets for like 30 secs, invis vs. undead, water brething, a lifetap dot, dot upgrades etc.

I love my necro, wouldn't give up playing for anything! The problem is you're fighting thigns too weak. Yeah, soloing those lvls are fine, but in a full group you really need either higher dots, or higher lvl mobs. And even still, I party with a ranger sometimes who does TONS of dmg that I wonder if I should bother... then he misses his shot and my crippling blight/DOTs help to just keep him alive.
So it depends on what you're fighting/what happens per battle.

Whats the big lvl 10 spell? Necopsy? Sealed Fate? My necro is lvl 9 and i'm curious.

The four big things I saw at level 10 were:

1) Necropsy, finding your first really nice pet graft (instead of buying a Level 5 graft off the exchange) just seems fulfilling. Make sure you set up a macro for doing this since you don't have to own the corpse to be able to peel it open.
/targetnextcorpse
/cast "Necropsy"

2) Sealed Fate is really nice. You need to max your Int as fast as you get attribute points and keep Power of the Grave up at all times. You want to spell crit on Bone Spike to enable this Spell Finisher.

3) Annul Magic. Although its on like a 15sec cooldown, being able to counter incoming effects is HUGE. Again you want to set this up on a macro.
/cancelability
/cast "Annul Magic I"

4) EVAC!!!!!! Do not ever underestimate the usefulness of "Underground Journey" when the fit hits shan. So far I used this ability 3 times to pull us out of UGLY situations.

Something else I'm seeing is that we really come into our own in groups when the pullcount exceeds 1. Some mobs are social, and it just isn't possible to pull a single. The Bugbears at 3 rivers is a great exampl of this. They will pull in groups of 4-6 ver frequently. Snaring, DoTing, Nuking, Using pet to pull aggro off yourself, and Evaccing if life goes ugly. Its a blast! On a single mob when grouped, I usually only Torment/Bone Spike/Pet Attack, but on multiple mobs, I'm VERY busy.

Necro are THE dot class, sorry but if the battle isent long then you are going to get out dpsed by the other classes, thats just how it is

But short battles rarely yield either good xp or loot. If you want the "good stuff" you have to go for the challenge, and those battles generally last a good bit longer.

If you're fighting a 4 dot mob, one level below or higher, then your dots really start to shine. Below that it's pet, debuff, bone shard...because that's all you have time for. At lvl 18 you get a couple more DD spells, and the corpse exploding spell, but I'm not sure of the casting time on these so you still may not have a lot of time to cast them. Remember in this game everyone is dps.
