OK, it may be just me but I have having a much harder time getting anything out of the official Vanguard forums. Part of the problem is that I have been too busy this summer to troll the boards as diligently as I once did. Now, I start to follow a few posts and before you know it, there are pages and pages of replies from people I have never heard of. Also, with real info being released all over the net it is more confusing to speculate on Vanguard or determine if joepublic's comments are correct or even close to what a dev has released.
/boggle
Thankfully there exists these fansite boards where a bedazzled veteran OVF troll can slow down and get a word in edgewise. :p
I feel better now. :-P

I think I am just getting impatient. I've been imagining what the game is like for over two years... time to actually see it.

The hardest part for me now is that there are not only a lot more people but a lot more people who haven't read any of the info that has been given alread... therefore we end up with a ton of people speculating on stuff that the answers have already been given to... which is kind of a pet peeve of mine...

Just had a thought ... wonder if someone could make a post for "Almost Completely Discussed Topics" with links to the most positive and informative threads on those topics. It's not a project I would tackle, grin, but I could see it maybe being stickied by Glip. If we had such a thing on the OVF, it might actually be a service to new folks ... might be nicer to point them to a sticky than to repeat over and over that that topic has been overly contemplated? This could be in addition to the Newbie Helper. Of course, now that I have written all this I can see that someone would have to be totally nuts to take on a project of defining the almost completely discussed topics and then linking them .... but perhaps if we suggest it, someone would be eccentric enough to devote some time to it.

yah, it is reasons like this and worse that have provoked the non-stop:
"Search is your friend"
replies. Everyone starts their post with...
"Hey, I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, but....etc"
and noone thinks to go look, lol.
I go there 2-3 times a day Orlun (I'm a freak), this ouwld be a cool place to come and discuss things that were witnessed on OVF.

Not to mention that if half these people actually go out and see if there's an answer to thier question, then whatever the answer is, its the 7th Sign of the Apocolypse for them.

I think Glip is really a macro designed to look for specific keywords and similarities in posts to which the macro will reply:
"Keep it Civil"
or
"Locking to Consolidate"
maybe GLIP is really G.L.I.P. that stands for Gramatically Leveraged Internet Poster
ooooh... it all makes sense now...
the plot thickens!

I know what you mean.. both to the original poster and several replies as well.
Though I know no such prejudice exists with the good quality posters over on the OVF, I was somewhat relieved to see my status raise from Member to Senior Member despite how selective my posting is. A lot of people feel the need to post in every single topic as it starts up, regardless of if they have any helpful comments or things to add. Now some of this can probably be chalked up to socializing and whatnot, but I've seen some rather odd replies as well. Not trying to set myself above or below anyone else, but as I am in person, I tend to listen a lot more than I give input. The same thing reflects on message boards, so I read lots yet say little. Doesn't do much to bolster my image ;)
In any case, I definately see the concerns about posts becoming redundant and derailed. I only feel bad that I hadn't decided to become more vocal earlier, as I may now just be lost in the tsunami of new onlookers. The Dev Tracker and OVF are still lined up on my shortcuts bar for my daily website checking however :) Just wanted to put in my two cents and all that.
I know what you mean as well. I used to love browsing through the OVF - half the time I didn't have the time to post there, but I loved scanning all the juicy/funny/informative tidbits left by the posters there. Now I only go to the OVF to certain threads or under duress. :( I leave browsing the OVF to more patient people like Lady Sirse :)

It's actually not that hard to sort through the crap to find good stuff. I spend too much time on the forums though, and usually reply on the adventuring and game play forums only. I don't know much about the technical aspect of the game, nor the graphics, so I wouldn't be leaving any insight there.
But I have only been on the forums for less than a month, and I'm a senior member. Doesn't mean I'm farming for postcount, as I usually leave 2 to 3 paragraphs in my posts trying to add something new to the conversation or debate. Because that's what I see it as, conversations and debates.
Unfortunately, 85% of what goes on in the forums is speculation because they've only released enough info to put the hook in the playerbase's mouth.
So, you see a LOT of speculation, and a lot of people as feyshtey mentioned that take something that is merely speculation and complain that this is ruining their game. Which is so ludicrous. Sometimes they are complaining about something Sigil has actually released, which is no better imo. They're gonna make the game, and you're gonna pay for it, AND like it. So suck it up.
The unfortunate thing that has happened lately is I think Brad and the devs feel as some of you do. It is harder and harder (and less enjoyable) to go to the forums and see some new stuff, or answer some new questions in Sigil's case. So I haven't seen a dev response in a while.
I'm hoping this changes, because when I see a topic with a few pages, most of the time I skim through it looking for those baby blue letters of the dev posting on it. Also, I have gotten to the point where I recognize colors of signatures, so i can quickly skim and stop when I see a familiar poster who i think has something interesting to say. No pressure Havelock. :D

Never.
I just want to add to the vent. Most of the noobs are great, but a few make me grind my teeth. There's a thread up today that inspires serious thoughts of violence.

Indeed you are not. It's great to know that the folks working on the game are that passionate about it.

Personally I think it was about time someone within the system said something about the amount of nitpicking whiners are doing :D

I've noticed a change in the OVF and that is since I really started to follow them back in May. I've already seen two or three 'what's your favorite game' threads, a whole bunch of EQ memories threads that just make me sick. Sure I've posted a few of my own, but now it's every little thing, like "worst death loops" or "fondest guild memories". Look not to offend, but should you not share that with your old guildies?!?! I have a ton of old screenshots and guild memories, but posting them on these forums or OVF will add absolutely nothing to the Vanguard community. The 'off topic' forum has its good days and its bad ones, like today, it sucked, nothing worthwhile, except for another "what's your three favorite games?" thread. Sure I posted, but by the time I finised my response there were 20 other responses, great, no one will see that!! Don't get me started on the 'Production' forum, so many Beta questions, people freaking out about Beta, stupid release date speculation (I'm somewhat guilty here..hehe), and the my favorite.....the "how do I get in beta" threads. As a somewhat board newb I shouldn't have much to complain about, I mean I can't imagine what it's like for someone who has followed the boards for a couple of years, someone like Orlun.
I suppose it could be worse. It could be the WoW forums......

I've gotten pretty good at sifting through the crap on the OVF. I hardly ever visit Off-topic or community. I don't look at production or arts and graphics. I focus on gameplay and adventuring. The Diplomacy section is so dead, that I am one of 10 posters there and I'm one of the more frequent ones...bleh.
And there's the obvious forum newb question that could be answered by the search button...oh well.
What really pisses me off is the countless content bashing posts.
the
"I hate this about your idea"
"If you have this, your game will not do well"
"Omgz, why don't I get my summoner?"
"Don't put in raid-loot, make all players equal"
it really gets old.
but there are a few gems hidden deep. None of my friends have the patience to find the gems hidden in poop...so i strap on the gloves and do it for them. :D :D
I get pretty heated sometimes when I have to deal with some of the more ignorant posters, but all in all, I love to debate...so it's my kinda place.

Yeah, the negative posts are generally stupid. A few are constructive and not obnoxious, but those are very rare.

The old war stories posts dont bother me in the slightest. In fact, I often enjoy them. Those are the times when you remember that these games are more about interacting with others, and enjoying a world, than just playing some single-player game.
I don't tell stories about any single player games, even if I could remember them enough to. But that's the point. I remember the stories in MMO's.
The threads that burn my buns are the "I can't believe they're doing X! What are they? Idiots!" threads. And the "Things that HAVE TO BE IN THE GAME, or I won't play" posts. Or better still, the "You have to allow this, or the game will fail!" posts.
Eclipse

exactly, I mean honestly...do these people think Sigil cares if they play or not? When they make sweeping posts like you said: "Omgz, I won't play if they do this!!" They honestly believe that will make a huge game change its stride?
And I agree with the old stories being cool, because when it comes right down to it, eventually you will reach the point in the game where you have surpassed content and are now farming dungeons while you wait. If you haven't forged a strong community of good people, stories and communication...you will likely get very depressed and end up being sour about the game.
I played Asheron's Call for 4 years with no end-game raiding content merely because the people I met there were absolutely amazing. Community is more important than content in the broad scheme of things, because it invokes the power of story. Vanguard will have people reminiscing and being nostalgic to players 5 or 6 years from now, and that to me is the sign of a successful game.
