View Full Version : Why dual wield?

What reason is there to dual wield? As far as I can tell, two handed weapons do similar damage, but dual wielding carries defensive penalties.

Is there any benefit to dual wielding over using a two handed weapon?

You get more of a benefit from +Damage abilities and +Damage buffs. (iirc)

There are some differences, but not as many as in other games due to the fact that all hits and misses are paired. (If one weapon hits, both hit, one misses, both miss, one crits, both crits.

You may want to skim an article I wrote about it for WoW back in the day. Article here (http://www.everbecoming.com/gauntlet/wayofwar.html)

Here in VG really the only reason would be stats on the items. The way they have designed it the game almost totally negates any other differences.

Another reason to go Dual is to use Short Swords or other times which will increase crit%.

It could just be a fluke but I have noticed over time that dual wielding hits more often than 2H. I miss my specials alot more with 2H (yes my skill is maxed) than when DW.

I guess the more pertinent question would be, what's so great about dual wielding that they had to lower your defensive skills?

Does dual wielding have some big damage bonus that is balanced by lower defensive skills? I don't see it.

personally i dont understand the full use of 2h Weapons. Cause from a visual point of view 2h sword DPS 21 at level 27 1 hander dps 21 at level 27. Most games the 2h wep will have a high dmg difference like 2h at level 27 doing a dps of 50 and a 1h doing 25 at the same level

Well, I think that if you equip a 2H sword that is near max expertise for your level its DPS will be greater than a 1H sword that is very enar your max expertise. I'm only level 19 and I have an 18 DPS 2H weapon so 21 DPS at level 27 doesn't seem very high.

I also notice that 2H is cheaper on the broker and there are quite a bit more of them for sale compared to the much more expensive high DPS 1H stuff.

Quite honestly the only reason I duel wield is for the stats when Im solo. In groups I use shield and 1h and defensive stance ...thats a hint to tanks that dont hehe.

In most games it's easier to keep agro if you duel weild. I'm not sure if that is the case in Vanguard. Basically you attack faster and more often then with a two handed weapon which generates more agro on the mob. You also have a better chance of interupting a spell being cast with the faster attacks. Being that Warriors are the only protective fighter that can duel weild you can do it if you want to be unique. :D

Well, if you're grouping the best way to hold aggro is go sword and board in defensive stance. :)

I assume you can dual-wield weapons of different type? like piercing and slashing. This would give you the benefit of raising both skills.

I agree that there are many minor reasons to dual wield.

But why does dual wield carry a defensive penalty when 2 handed weapons do not?

Speaking as a rogue, I duel-wield to get the extra % on my crit rate. Each dagger gives me 5%, which I'm assuming stacks, but don't know for sure.

Anyway, if I don't get my crits, I die, so every little bit helps. On the other hand, the defense penalty also hurts me, since I wear such wimpy armor. I guess my current strategy is "kill them quick, so they don't kill me."

Works okay I guess, but I'd still like to see solid numbers on the various weapon configurations, so I can make an informed decision.

Dual wield attacks faster and does the same dps as a 2hander

The extra 7.5% crit chance you can get is much better than doing slightly more damage with 2handers when they crit

The defense penalty was removed

Dual wield owns 2handers hands down (except martial swords, thats a shield and a farkin 2hander all in one)

Yes, as Vanboi said without explaining it for you posterboy, it's 7.5% crit bonus. You only receive 50% of the offhand's crit bonus.

Why on earth use DW? Sword and board all the way. Why? Bash line. Good damage, stun and improved defense/ac/mitigation? Hell, yes! Just switch between def and off stances as needed (ie tanking/off tanking)

I DW'd for ages until lvl 10, now at 14 I wont ever go back.

Off topic, but I just found this comment to be alittle amusing : )

Im lvl 18 now and I DW 100% of the time when I solo.

I DW as much as I can when I group and I stay in offensive stance as much as I can.

I only switch to Defensive and Shield and Sword it if im having trouble keeping agro or if the mobs are tuff or if we are going to be pulling 4 to 5 mobs. I normaly only group with guildies and I know when im putting a strain on the healers or they will tell me, hey drunk a@@ switch to def

Another reasons I DW so much is my weps are awesome, thanks Lexxypoo :D

I wouldn't use a 2H unless it was alot better than the 1H weps I have.
