View Full Version : Vanbois....the mentally challenged gamers

My definition of a Vanboi- A person that defends Vanguard/Sigil/SOE/Brad/any Dev from any and all criticism no matter how true it may be. A person that takes all Vanguard criticism as a personal insult. A person that likes to use the phrase, "Go back to WoW". A person that believes any and all tedium involved with Vanguard is a good thing that adds challenge.
Vanbois are an odd sort. They talk a big game about needing a hard game because other MMO's are just too easy, but their performance in other games would suggest differently.
These are the people that yell from the rooftops about how easy WoW is. They cry about anything in Vanguard being made easier even if it is simple common sense. For example; I recently read a post about how quests should have some sort of level guideline (such as a color system) so people wouldn't waste time on quests that they have outleveled. Sounds reasonable, right? Not to the Vanboi. They want you to mindlessly work your way through every quest at a new area to figure out if it is lvl appropriate. Some people suggest a way for faster travel to make grouping easier...... Vanbois will have none of that. Anything that makes the game less tedious is strictly forbidden by Vanbois in the guise of making the game harder. Every good Vanboi knows that tedium=challenge. Some people suggest that exp cost should be reimbursed if caused by a bug.... Vanbois think that idea stinks.
*My theory*
Ususally the rabid Vanbois are the people who would have something like this in their sig on the original forums during beta.
XXX lvl 53 druid EQ1 (4 years) Max cooking
XXX lvl 13 warrior DAOC (6 months) Max Whittling
XXX lvl 8 blackmage FFXI (1 year) Max fishing
XXX lvl 28 conjuror EQ2 (6 months) Max Flower arrangements
XXX lvl 26 rogue WoW (1 year. quit......too easy) Max skinner
(basically 'tards that can't max a character, yet pick the most WORTHLESS tradeskill to max out and feel a real sense of accomplishment)
Vanbois are the people who have never made max level in any game they have ever played. These are the people who simply couldn't keep up with the rest of the playerbase and blame it on the game being too easy. The people that endlessly talk about how simple and easy WoW is, are the people who have never even gotten to max level, much less set foot in a raid zone.
The warped logic here is that they are crying for everything to be as slow and tedious as possible because they think they will have a fighting chance of keeping up with the hardcore players if it takes a long time when really it will just take them that much longer to catch up. These attempts to slow progression are futile though because the typical Vanboi will NEVER hit max level.
What Vanbois don't realize is that they are the people that everyone else jokes on in game. They are the ones who have /100 days playtime in a game but are lvl 30 because they like to "explore and look at tree tops and watch the clouds and find secret nooks that no one else knows about and they love slow experience groups so can roleplay and get to know everyone." Basically they are the most godawful noobtastic gamers that have this elitist attitude because of one thing........they want leveling to be tediously long.
It is just a sad attempt to slow everyone else down so they look like they can compete in comparison. Basically, the Vanbois type in every MMO are the running joke. Pretty soon they will all be crying about why they can't get epic gear in regular experience groups, and wondering why this game caters to kiddies who spend all their online time raiding (count on this one).
Pro tip: You will never have epic gear because you can't get into a real guild because you seriously stink at every game that has ever been made, and no amount of slowing everyone down will change that.
p.s. It's rather ironic that the very game that Vanbois rabidly defend is the game they are killing. Go ahead Vanbois keep telling everyone that is critical of this game to just leave. Pretty soon it will just be 100 of you lore-loving nosepickers left, and then you can all hold hands at the alter of Brad while you take 5 years to hit max level.

Go back to WoW dumbass
Geting to high level isent hard, its just stupidly boring at high level when your exp bar progresses so slowly
People who dont get max dont get max because they dont like to grind, its simple as that
Your generalizations fail, im a vanboi yet I hate tedium based gaming

A couple of things...
You are obviously jealous of something, tho I can't tell what. So you are reaching deep into your vocabulary of third grade insults to try and shake people.
For one, you are clueless if you think cooking was "useless" in EQ1. In fact it was probably the ONLY craft worth a damn since everyone used food! Especially after stat foods became popular. Oh yeah, and the most useless tradeskill in EQ2 was weaponcraft, but you obviously never even played the game.
Second, Most of the "rabid Vanbois" are the exact opposite of what you describe. We enjoy a challenge because it means our accomplishments actually MEAN something. I'm a Vanboi, I'm proud of it, And I am 9% from lvl 33. Can't keep up, huh?
You have no clue. You are probably one of those people who "work hard" but can't seem to figure out why you keep dying. Try again, son. Maybe you can come up with something original.

I can't believe you graced him with a rebuttal Elanie. You knew this guy was looking for a bite.
Outside of that, pre-grats on 33. I'm 50% to 25 atm. Trying not to level too fast due to the reported lack of mid-end (30+) content. I know there is *some* but I heard it was few and far between (gear, quests, etc). Oh, and re: tomb weapons, I got my heroic Adrid last night :P I thought there was supposed to be a part that sends you to Thestra, but I got it after the 5 gens. This sound right?

I heard they changed it and removed the part in Thestra, moving the clicky thingy to outside the tomb.... I guess some people complained about a 20 minute trip to Thestra being "too hard" so they made it easier. I thought after actually aquiring the first mace, the quest was FAR too easy for such an awesome weapon. I'm still using it at lvl 33, but thats cuz I have no patience for Infinium and don't feel like doing that quest line lol.
hmm, oddly enough a special rule set sever for lore-loving nosepickers and godawful noobtastic Vanbois sounds pretty good. Now to petition Sigil....:p :p

Hmmm, I didn't get any dialog from the guy outside the Tomb entrance in regards to upgrading a final time. Let me retrace my steps:
Did symbols for first version.
Did stonegazers, oaks, turtles for second.
Did some different named turtle for third.
Did 5 gens for 4th (and what I thought was final) upgrade. Mine is a 20 point something dps heroic con mace.
And yes, I agree, that quest chain as a whole wasn't 'hard', unless they are considering the time spent trying to get the rarer of the symbols to drop 'hard'. Everything after getting the symbols was ridiculously easy, including the generals, which we 4 manned.

[B]p.s. It's rather ironic that the very game that Vanbois rabidly defend is the game they are killing.
Both Gamspy and Gamespot reviewers dinged Vanguard becuase of it's community. I'm sure the rep has driven a few subscribers away.
The WoW, Vanguard fanbois remind me a lot of Ford, Chevy fanbois. To me, Fords and Chevys are pretty similar as are Vanguard and WoW pretty similar.
Yet, I bet people have been shot and killed over Ford, Chevy disputes. To the fanbois it's a serious subject.

Argh, I can't resist.
Okay here "WoW is too damn easy, I much prefer Vanguard".
Now, my WoW Character:
Boogah, level 70 Warlock (took me 11 *days* to reach 70 from 60 when BC came out) Both standard flying mount and epic flying mount.
Arathor server. In the raiding guild Malevolence who is currently kicking the crap out of Karazhan.
Before BC we were up to Nax on our raids. My lock was mostly tier 2 to 2.5 tiered (some AQ40, some Naxx stuff)

Before the post of the OP turned into that mindless rant against tradeskills and people unable to max out their characters there was some truth in it, that we should focus on, if we really want to keep discussing in here.
One thing, that is wrong with several people in VG, is their desire to make the game experience 'hard' for everyone. Why is that? There is nothing wrong with quality of life issues like color-coding questlines, beefing up the map or providing security for your character until you are fully logged into the game.
Personally, I think it should be up for the individual player to decide how he wants to enjoy a game enviroment. If someone really is under the impression, that the map and pointer system makes his game too easy, he should be able to disable it and keep on playing his way. Good games are able to cater to many different ways of gameplay. VG has every potential to turn out as one of those good games, given a little efford by the devs.

Vanbois are the sort of people who defend bugs and broken design as positive things which make a game more 'challenging'.
Anyone looking for challenge in an MMORPG is barking up the wrong tree. EQ, WoW, Vanguard--they're all easy. If you want a challenge in a PC game, take up professional FPS gaming or some other similarly competative activity.

Yep, lets let the players decide how hard they want the game to be. Ok, everyone is instantly level 50 and can get raid gear off of one dot level 1 mobs... Boy, that would be fun, eh? :)

Form up a group and do a dungeon crawl, also make sure the mobs are higher level then your group, say yellow. Dont do greens.

I won't categorize anyone into vanbois as the OP described. However there seems to be a certain bunch of people who have a strange need to keep forum and community as the only true source of information.
These people would have things kept hidden in the game so they have an advantage over the "casual" gamers who do not have the time to scroll up and down forums and articles. Of course digging deep into public knowledge makes you more skilled but it should not be an inbuilt part of learning a MMORPG.
IMO things are right now good as they are (in VG and WoW). The basics are handed to you and you can learn every part of your class - to some extend.
Number crunching and popular technique knowledge still makes a good player even better, just as it should.
To me Vanguard is an equally easy game as WoW. In both of them the real skill is playing with a cool head, premeditating your next couple of moves and scenarios etc.
No matter how easy the game is, a smart player will always take it to a next level. As it is now other smart players notice it when you are on that level. What more is needed? Laughing at newbies who go and wipe countlessly after monster level information is hidden?
Reading forums is not an integral part of a MMORPG and it should only be a little rewarding when you already know how to play.

Oh boy, another one of these posts.
I personally have found the community to be just fine. Sure there are some extremists on the forums, but in game it's been pretty good. What game community doesn't have this problem? Maybe the community would be a little nicer if every other post wasn't, "ZOMG VANGUARD GAMERS R ALL 1337 AND WILL H8 U!" You're criticizing us for being elite and stuck-up, yet the title of your thread is "Vanbois....the mentally challenged gamers." Now that's what I call fair and reasonable!

Well, I guess I'm not a Vanboi... possibly because with the exception of WoW (where I got to 50 in 7 days of a 10 day trial and realized I couldn't stand the game or the graphics) I have actually maxed out characters in every game I've played.
For Example:
EQ 70 rogue, enchanter, druid, paladin (68 monk)
DDO rogue10/ranger2, pally4/sorc8, pally 3/cleric9, warrior9/wiz3 (WF) and bard 11/sorc1 (Okay, I REALLY liked DDO.)
Gemstone Empath 100, rogue 100
There were others (AC, EQ2, SWG, LineageII, UO, DAoC and CoH/V) but they really fade out of my memories as to what I played in them. But those three games up there held my interest for a combined total of 18 years between them. WoW couldn't hold my interest past a week. In fact, the only game that has been LESS appealing to me in the last decade than WoW was the LotR beta.
Further, I can see the flaws in VG. The map stinks. The broker needs a better sorting system (search by stats, for example.) Each race needs more hair choices. My girlfriend and the neighbor girl both insist the game needs sexier clothes for the female characters (and I'm not gonna argue with them.) There needs to be some kind of sorting system on quests. And there is the still present warping monsters issue and some folks still fall through the world. And my biggest pet peeve: Give me more than 8 characters!
So, instead of a Vanboi, call me a Vandinista. :)

I love this game. Call me a vanboi, I don't care. One thing I can say though - I have a level 24 and level 20, and can say without a doubt that nothing in Vanguard has been even remotely as difficult at raiding Naxx (pre-expansion) in WoW. Maybe that will change once I get higher.
I guess people are just using different reference points for determining whether something is easy or not. If you compare leveling - Vanguard is harder. If you compare hardest content vs. hardest content, I would lean towards WoW. They are just easy/difficult in different ways.

Wow they changed the quest quite a bit! I got the 4 symbols, completing the first quest and picking up the mace off of the altar (which btw, is by far the coolest feeling I've ever had in an MMO... I knew I was first as I had at least 3 GM's watching me as I did it, and they told me as much).
Then the next step was to go talk to the guy outside, who told me to kill the stonegazers, oaks, and turtles. Did that in a trio with a monk and ranger, then back to the ghost for the first upgrade (second mace).
Ghost told me I had to solve some riddles at the riddle stones, which were kind of behind the little village outside that area. So I went there, and I had 1 minute to answer all 4 riddles, and when I answered one wrong, I was dotted (strangled was the term I believe) and would have died if I hadn't have healed myself through it while I continued to answer the questions. After all 4 were answered correctly (3 were pretty easy, there was one that I selected the wrong answer 3 times lol) I went back to the ghost, who gave me the second upgrade (third mace).
I was given my Tsangs key, which I used to summon the 5 generals. I wiped the first time, cuz I was the only healer and I lagged so bad I was getting like 1 fps, and agro was everywhere, so we died. But after they fixed it so I could repeat the generals (it used to be one shot until my wipe and subsequent bitch-fest at the GM's expense) I got my symbol and went down to the ghost again. I was then sent to Thestra. It was a bit of a run, but not horrible since I had done the opposite on the way down, and I knew where I was going thanks to the directions of some guildies. I just ran over there, dodged some 3 dot even cons (can't remember what lvl they were, I was 22-23ish?) and swam down to a boat, clicked on a tablet, and my mace was upgraded there to the final upgrade (4th mace).
I didn't have to kill any named turtle. Was he fun? Now I'm sad, I wanna kill a big turtle lol!

Chae668--you wouldn't need to resort to green-text gimmickery if your posts actually contained worthwhile content.
ShadeVice--you may think fighting yellows in a group is tough. I don't. The only thing in a PvE MMORPG I can recall as being difficult was racing and defeating other guilds in endgame progression, which while difficult wasn't something I particularly thought of as 'fun'.
I'm quite happy with Vanguard, but I'm not deluding myself into thinking it's some sort of unique challenge. It isn't (though it might be for some people). It's a simple relaxing hobby I can share with my wife. For that purpose it's quite excellent. If I want a edge-of-my-seat challenge, I look elsewhere.
Discussions of 'challenge' inevitably remind me of my experience at the end-of-beta tele-tag event. I participated in that event and had a lot of fun, and was rewarded with many, many hate tells from individuals who folded up and cried like girls at the first hint of real opposition. Some of those individuals were names I recognized from the forums who bragged about how much they liked VG's difficulty. How funny :D

Ack, actually I missed a part. I also had to do the riddles, trying to remember where they were in the steps I listed in last post. The turtle guy wasn't an actual named, it was just a different type of turtle, dawntail i think they were called? They were level 22ish 4 dots.
They definitely changed some things though. The riddle part seems to be 'nerfed' because there was no 1 minute timer and no 'dot' for getting incorrect answer (I only answered one wrong and that was on purpose...it as something along the lines of 'I nag you and you cannot stand me, blah blah blah' and one of the choices was mother-in-law. I thought that was hilarious). Also, the go to Thestra thing must have been removed (which is a bit silly as well, it really isn't hard to get there and would be a nice segway to get people to travel a bit more.) After Generals it was upgrade at ghost guy and gg.
Is your mace 20.something dps as well with some energy and healing focus or some such?

I'm so ignorant my wife and I can duo some even or higher 5-dot mobs. I'm so ignorant I routinely pull excess mobs onto my group just to keep things 'interesting' at the cost of efficiency (I so despise groups that only play it safe).
I've been involved with MMO gaming since ~1994, and have also participated in FPS gaming at an extremely high level of competition. MMORPG's simply aren't difficult in the same sense that fighting professional gamers in UT is. You can call me an elitist snob if you wish--and it wouldn't be entirely undeserved--but I don't think you can accurately call me ignorant.
Perhaps a 'vanboi' is someone who refuses to accept the notion that this one game isn't the alpha-game in every possible aspect.

Seriously I can, and I don't know if I think I should be able to or not. Reason I say that is because it takes so frickin long to do it, but I can see how it can be used to complete some difficult quests without a group. I can't solo all 5 dots though.
100 of us that like things just the way they are? In a 3 block radius in neighborhood, there are 11 of us that love this game just the way it is. 11 of us in 3 square blocks out of a small town off less then 10,000 people. One small town in the US, out of millions of small towns and cities..... seems like there will be much more then just 100 of us.

I don't like FPS. Why? Because I find them tiresome and obnoxious. Yes I fully enjoyed Goldeneye (who didn't!?) but that is honestly the only FPS I've ever played, and I've never done it in an MMO scale. I also don't like PVP. Its my style, and neither of us is wrong. You find challenge in FPS. That is awesome. I find challenge in overcoming really tough mobs in an RPG. That is awesome. So can we please stop it with the "My challenging is more challenging than your challenging" crap? Its really pointless, as everyone has a different level of what they find challenging, and what they find tedious or boring.

Your ignorant because of your views not your experience.
When i said "yellow mobs" I meant that to state the difficulty of the dungeon, not the fact that killing a yellow mob is hard.
I doubt just any person can grab 5 other people and dungeon crawl a higher con dungeon. Even if that group is balanced.
Player skill and intelligence will make it less difficult ofcourse.
Your opinion is that it isnt difficult because you're good at it, thats fine, thats one way to *view* it.
Ive also played many FPS, starcaft, excelled at those.
My point is dungeon crawling in this game is difficult if you arent good at what you do. If you're an expert player, yes the difficulty level goes down quite a bit.
You can put non-expert players in a WoW dungeon and they wont have any problems.

You are correct in that challenge is relative. However, it still scales--even a poor player who has trouble here, will still likely have a lot MORE trouble if you put him into a tougher scenario. I'm willing to entertain the notion that those players who consider Vanguard 'difficult' are in reality just saying they're satisfied with its overall difficulty in a vacuum (eg, not in comparison to other games or genres).

Well ofcourse.
There is always someone better.
There is always something harder.
That not only applies to gaming but to life.
Lets not bring the spectrum to an unrealistic point here...

These forums seriously make the player base of VG look terrible. The people I've met in game have all been nice, but if I came to these forums first, I wouldn't even pick up the game. You guys who love Vanguard should really make a note that people read the forums before buying a game and you guys are a representation of the quality of player currently playing.

Anyone who says WE, WE, WE... this is what we want, this is what we got, go play wow noob... Just remember that players are what make a game. No players = no revenue = no salary for people to continue working on YOUR universe. Be nicer.
Even with a half baked product, there is a huge mass of people still rolling the dice on Vanguard. The community alone imho can make or break Brad's chance at true success. You guys in the we we we we want world should really consider better supporting your game. No company can keep it's doors open working on a game with 100 people paying for it.

I agree, 99% of the people I meet in game are extremely nice. People can be complete asses in a forum and it doesn't affect them in game. If all you do is complain in game, it'll hurt your reputation. No one wants to group with a whining crybaby. So in general, you don't hear people complaining in game. Most questions in game are responded to with polite answers and people trying to help each other out.
That pie place also has strawberry pie (in season) that basically consists of fresh sliced strawberries, crust, and tons of whipped cream. Really good if you love strawberries. They have more types of cream and silk pies than you can shake a stick at as well. Always so hard to choose. The salad (served in a pie tin of course) and sandwiches are really good too.
Of course one of my favorite pies is one my mom makes for the holidays that is a cherry and cream cheese pie on a graham cracker crust. It is the crust filled with a cream cheese mixture topped with cherry pie filling. And it is super rich.

OMG, this thread is ridiculous. What a Wowtard.
Only someone from wow would think hitting cap is the end all and be all of a game. Plus that someone that doesn't hit cap didn't accomplish anything.
I find it amusing though, since WoW was designed for raiders, pvpers and extremely casual people. It's designed to be easy to level where you can hit cap in 2 weeks. It makes it easy for replacements for raiding guilds. Then there's nothing to do at cap but pvp. Plus it makes super casual players feel like they've accomplished something in the half an hour session they play.
It's almost like he doesn't realize that there's more to a game besides leveling to cap in 2 weeks and sitting around doing nothing. Getting to cap means the end of the game, not the starting in most games. That's why they call raiding endgame.

What do you mean?!?! There's no Ford / Chebbie rivalry! Well, I guess they are jealous, but there's just some folks that like a life of "grinding", while others enjoy an easy trip to the top. I guess that means Chebbiebois = early EQ1 and Fordfanbois = WOW? /snicker

*pushes up nerdy spectacles* WE love this game because it has all the bugs that WE feel is neccessary to make it challenging. WE asked for it this way and if that is what Brad sold US then WE will defend it from critics on a daily basis. WE want the features back in from beta1 where if WE rubbed our virgin penises on the keyboard fast enough WE would get a +1 to loremaster. WE believe wowboys like you complained that it was too difficult and so Brad took it out.

Me, too. How are you, Atoyota, and why do you have to change your name?
I don't in forums, but they made me change it in beta.
Does'nt matter to me now though, even with complete freedom in names I'd still not play. Vanguard does'nt have legs for me...
Good game for youse floks I guess, just not me... looking for and expectimg more from an MMOg.

Well, aren't you the perfect example of a Vanboi. Lame ass character history in your sig, referring to your breed as WE like you are some inbred collective Borg. Let me guess........you max'd fishing in FFXI?
Where is the obligatory EQ1 character in your sig? Didn't you run uphill both ways through Kithikor at night? OMG, the "WE" you speak of will boot you from their super elite "no accomplishment" club.

How dare the company the orginalted 3D MMOs Stick to their guns and create an MMO that many players of other MMOs were asking for?!!!ONE11 How dare those of us who like the game not take crap from those who have nothing better to do than instigate and then whine? What were we thinking, playing a game that we love and defending it to the people who have no better charge to lay agansit it than "You guys are Vanbois?

I am not VGSucks, and it is clearfor all to see that you got your ****ing IT degree from the back of a box of Fruit Loops. You may as well just get used to the fact that the only job you will ever have will be scrubbing the shitters at McDonalds, right after you serve me my order of fries and a Big Mac. You have no future in the IT industry, even if you suck everyone off and offer to have them pound you in the ass for days. No chance.

I like pie.
Pecan is my favorite. Nice and warm with ice cream.
There is a place here called Pioneer Pies that has some of the best pie. They have a lunch special with half a sandwich, salad, and a slice of any of their pies. So hard to choose.
I like pie, too.
But Pecan pie is for pie n00bs. I can't eat pecan pie without throwing up.
Strawberry-Rhubarb pie is the pie of champions. If you are a really skilled pie eater, you get it with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry. So unless you get Strawberry-Rhubarb pie a la mode with whipped cream and a cherry, you are a worthless pie n00b that should never be allowed to eat pie ever again.

I was under the impression you can't have stuff like that because of the colostomy bag?

Dear VGSuck,
I'm really sorry that you have to go through this life with a penis so small that the only way you can feel even the remotest rush of testosterone in to come into an anonymous forum and blast a game/players for perceived wrongs that don't even seem to be directed at you.
p.s. It's Chevy and Pecan Pie for the masses!

Aha! Another WoW noob! I don't even play VG but I can tell what kinda person the OP is and yes good post for the Volcano. See, I'm one of those old school EQ1 players that never hit max level. Yeah, highest I got was 49 at Velious and I did indeed have trades like blacksmithing, fishing, cooking, and of course the town drunk skill of alchohol tolerance maxed out. I don't think the OP understands immersion or roleplaying at all or if he does he hates it.
I hit lvl 60 in WoW within 4 months of what I consider casual playing (less than 20 hours a week, I know to some people thats a lot but for me its casual) I spent a lot of my time PvPing and fishing as well..and I did a lot of exploring, it just didn't matter cause hitting max level in that game was EASY! Not once did I ever feel like I had hit hard times. If I totally wiped out on a dungeon/raid and had to fully repair everything it didn't make me even flinch.
So now I am playing EVE online. And I will try Vanguard whenever I finally decide to get a new computer. I'm certainly not going to buy a new comp just for Vanguard since its not what it was promised to be, what I really wanted from an MMORPG.
As for pie, Trystan you are close. Pure rhubarb pie is the best, no strawberry to contaminate the flavor.

Actually, pure rhubarb is my favorite, too. I was trying for a more mass appeal.
My grandmother used to make a sublime rhubarb pie, good memories. Thanks for stoking them.
