These forums are a cesspool - with trolls who routinely accuse Sigil of unethical behavior, lie about Sigil's product to new comers, post to just piss people off - and general make no positive contribution to this community.

The threads posted by these individuals invariably turn into flame wars that bury threads that actually contribute - like bug reports, constructive criticism, newbies asking questions, etc. They also give a negative impression of the game with their shrill exaggeration of it's faults.

I routinely report these threads only to see nothing done about the, absolutely nothing, and in my frustration i'll call out the troll. What do i get from it? threats from administration and flat out refusals by them to do anything about it.

If the admins persist in this behavior then Sigil should stop linking to this site, and stop posting on it, because they're doing themselves more harm than good in directing traffic here to be given a exaggeratedly bag view of the game. Newbies have come on here and it's been so bad that certain trolls have outright lied to them about the content of the game, and nothing was done about it.

This is not to say that Sigil and the game don't have flaws - they do, it's just that the flaming and trolling and shrill exaggeration of them is harmful and MUST STOP whether or not the administration of this website wishes to get involved.

Ok, Den, you and i ususally agree on most issues but i've got to say that calling out the mods and telling them how to do thier jobs is the quickest way to turn this into exactly what you're trying to decry. I'm not in love with the fact that we don't have official forums, myself. I fervently wish that people had to have an active game account to post here, but they don't. We have to take reponsibility for a part of the reputation of the community as well. Not as large a part as some people would like to foist on us, but a part. I could be nicer. I won't be, because i refuse to suffer those i consider fools, but i could be.
The bottom line is this; if you don't want there to be flame threads on the forums, don't start flame threads on the forums.

Totally disagree with the OP.

Practically all forums have Trolls and most people with experience from online gaming recognize this and can differentiate between them and actual posts by players.

Speaking only from my personal experience with this site... I was led here before purchasing the game...read some posts...got some insight....saw some trolls...saw some players that seemed to know what they were talking about...then bought the game.

VG now has a paying customer because of info I got off of these forums and browsing from the wiki.

I'm telling you ...he works for Sigil. Granted, I don't think they pay him anything.

Unfortunately, this forum is a pretty accurate reflection of the current issues with the game as well as a fair representation of the mix of players you can find. You can blame the members of any forum for polluting it.

Fact is, in those communities where members are kind, patient, and forgiving of each other, it shows. It is, I agree, to the detriment of this game to host some of the people that post here.

Nevertheless, these are the people newcomers will be playing with. And for that, this is certainly a good place to visit if potential players want a preview of what to expect.

Cheers to Silky. While maybe more moderation would be nice, I appreciate you hosting these forums.

While I wouldn't be adverse to a little more moderation here, I would hardly call SV a cesspool and harmful to Vanguard. The forums are generally filled with helpful people and quite a bit of Vanguard knowledge. You just have to know which threads (and posters) to avoid. Honestly, this is one I would normally avoid.

as one of those people who drags posts like this into the volcano I do have something to say in my defense. I do try to be helpful when legitimate questions are asked (both here, and in game), and I do thank people who answer my questions. Yes, I am guilty of going off topic, but sometimes, you just need to lighten up.

Yes, but the hijacking only tends to happen in order to change the direction of threads from all-out flame fests to something more fuzzy....like mongoose fur.... And it's a break from the monotony of post after post of incoherent mumblings.

I agree that Silky Venom is probably driving away more people than recruiting, and Sigil should probably stop linking it,but I don't see how it's the Silky Venom admins fault.

I HATE TTH because of the Mods. Free speech is cast aside for constant censorship as they are constantly editing and deleting things. People should be able to say whatever the hell they want in a forum IMO.

that's why I'm saying I hate TTH, because they take it to an extreme that sits very badly with me and will prompty not post on SV if they start modding like TTH.

I think it promotes the already overly-defensive community to cut down anyone who criticizes Sigil or the game. Not that they edit every criticism, but god forbid your tone isn't to their liking, they'll delete it in a heartbeat.

FWIW, i read silkyvenom forums to see how vanguard is progressing. Not a player atm, but i am interested in the game, and may be subscribing at a later date. I check the forums here, to keep up to date on the game. So far, i'm completely satisfied with the information, the answers, and am fully entertained in the meantime.

Personally, i believe that these forums are being modded just fine.. We don't need any Trolls, but if the boards are boring.. who will come? As long as no one is breaking any laws.. or being overtly rude or ignorant.. what's the problem? We're all adults here.. or at least are old enough to know how to act as one.

Corrective Actions

1. Posting porn and offensively grotesque images.

The user will be banned permanently and without warning.

2. RMT site links.

If it is clearly an advertisement, expect to be banned permanently and without warning. Otherwise, expect to have your post edited by a moderator to remove the links.

3. A thread of offensive insults with no content value. (A thread in gross violation of the Posting Guidelines, otherwise known as a "flame".) If the original post is a complete waste of space and a majority of the posts in the thread are also, this is Volcano material.

The thread will be moved to the Volcano (including any non-insulting and/or valuable replies). Consider doing us a favor and posting your flame-ridden rants there to begin with. ;)

4. An individual who consistantly creates #3s.

If the behavior continues after being warned, the user will be permanently or temporarily banned to the Volcano (per moderator discretion), which means the user will only ever be able to create posts there and nowhere else.

5. A heated discussion with a few instulting remarks.

We're fine with this, but the users posting the insults will get warnings as per #4 above.

6. The Silky Venom staff and moderators reserve the right to apply additional corrective actions not explicitly specified above in order to maintain the integrity of the site.

Thems the rules... none of the items you speak of fall into these categories so we can guess they fall within the "moderators' perogative" grouping

the threads you speak of do get dealt with as the Fire Penguins that inhabit the volcano have gotten quite fat on the turds commonly posted on these boards

There are a lot of them, yes... but what do you expect from a highly trafficked site that caters to a conglomerate of opinionated individuals

people feel certain ways about things... in some of your examples the original posters were posting under one pretense and when that misunderstanding was cleared up things were better... it happens...

everyone has the right to post on these forums and if you don't like what they post you can ignore any posts by them in the future (click on their name in one of their posts, view their public profile and add them to your ignore list )

Yes you may report posts because you don't like their content but in the end it is at the discretion of the Mods what will or will not cause a banning...

Would you rather participate on a forum where everyone's opionion is allowed (within certain reasoning that doesn't cross any major lines) or would you rather have a community where everyone is censored to the least common denomenator so that no one ever gets offended or upset by something?

I personally like the openness that is here at SV and if I get tired of a spammer I just throw em on my ignore list... it works wonders and if the users get worse and worse and worse theres always a line and bannings do happen... or worse... they are relegated to the :volcano:

EDIT: I don't think SV drives folks away, look at fires of heaven... people flock there in droves because of the controversial content and personalities and because they are known as a watering hole for veteran gamers... now I don't think SV should become the next FoH forums but I do think that SV provides and invaluable service to Vanguard and its commmunity

Centralized forums are better, although no less trolls. There are alot of posts on affiliate sites by frequent posters who "own the boards" with misinformation.

Let me help you out here. I'm going to make some educated assumptions here... approximately 10-15% of any given MMO population takes part in forum chat. That's on an official forum. Now take that 10-15% and divide it by 3 (might not wanna sniff that number... you dont wanna know where it came from) and that's what you have here. 3-5% of the total population. The other 95% of the populous buys the game and plays it.

Now lets mangle this number even further. Of that 5%, the amount of emos in here would total about 10%. I define emos as anyone who buys into the OPs garbage and cant handle a little bit of unmoderated debate without going fetal and pissing themselves. The rest of us just participate here daily in the conversation at hand without getting too riled up or emotionally attached to our forum persona. I know it's a stretch, but i'm gonna guess that the 10% of the 5% of the Vanguard pop that this thread addresses... well... we may be able to do without them.

From what I have seen.....as centralized forums normally require that you have a subscription to the game to post...there is less random bashing of the game....but that tends to lead to more random bashing of other posters, talking down their ability to play the game well...blah blah blah.

I have determined that there will always be people that like to talk crap just to get a rise out of others. If mods start removing and locking all posts that are like that...then even the "good guys" start to worry about what they are saying and hoping its not deemed bad and locked.

Either way....I like the site, was here for a bit reading before purchasing and it didnt turn me away from the game. IMO anyone that is detered from a game by trolls on the web site probably wont like an MMO anyways....there may be idiots on the web site but there also will be in a game too :)

BTW, there is another MMO out there that if one ventures into the wrong server specific official forums...they would probably run away in fear assuming half of the player base would come to their house and slit their throat if they did something wrong. :)

The guildleader and the guild have nothing to do with how the Silky Venom site itself is ran. The site was started way before there was a guild.

The two are independent of each other

The moderators are not at liberty to discuss other people's accounts with non-mods and users of the forums. Labyrrinth nailed this thread on the head as did others with you wanting to incite a flamewar against the moderators in a pissing match with them over them giving you warnings. I've had several warnings from Labyrrinth in the past for flaming people so I know that she won't divulge warnings issued against other players.

actually they are, and if they continue to refuse to remove posts that are slanderous of Sigil from their forums I am going to do everything in my power to have their affiliate status revoked.

Allowing negative posting is one thing, but they've outright ignored reports of posts that are slanderous to Sigil.

Denidil, you're digging yourself a hole here. First of all, Labyrrinth is a she not a him (last time I asked, anyway). Second of all, Labyrrinth RUNS this site and as as much authority as any of the red names, who run it equally. She isn't "just" a moderator. Third, its "refusal to engage in Denidil's idea of reasonable moderation," which, I'm sorry to say, is not "Labyrrinth's" idea of, and thus "Silky Venom's" idea of moderation. So suck it up and live with it. Or go somewhere else that is more friendly to you.

Denidil, I really think you need to step back and take a deep breath.

I've seen many of your posts where you jump down the throats of people who either disagree or criticise the game in some fashion... Who cares, if they do? just either calmly enter a deabe with them, or try to answer their questions.

Granted you do get trolls (in all forums), and some are obvious. Still the reverse is true when anyone cannot contain their passion for the game in a more mature fashion, and give rational answers.

The term Vanboi is on other forums much worse and far more negative towards Vanguard, and when I see reactions like this in posts, when a more calm and patient one is more effective? Well... I see you shooting yourself in the foot to be honest.

Let the game sell itself, the trolls and crtics will dissappear over time.
Develope a better filter and Listen to the honest questions and complaints, then try to help if you can by being positive.

If you can't... then just don't say anything.

These forums are a cesspool - with trolls who routinely accuse Sigil of unethical behavior, lie about Sigil's product to new comers, post to just piss people off - and general make no positive contribution to this community.

The threads posted by these individuals invariably turn into flame wars that bury threads that actually contribute - like bug reports, constructive criticism, newbies asking questions, etc. They also give a negative impression of the game with their shrill exaggeration of it's faults.

I routinely report these threads only to see nothing done about the, absolutely nothing, and in my frustration i'll call out the troll. What do i get from it? threats from administration and flat out refusals by them to do anything about it.

Not only do I not agree with you, but I once again applaud Silkys for something that used to be COMMON PLACE on the internet and is now almost exclusively found only here at Silkys. Thats the free exchange of ideas, not just the ones you like, or the ones form people you like, or presented in a way you don’t find offensive or you feel is productive . . . its a free exchange of ideas, period.

This creates a great deal of complication for them and also opens them to small minded criticisms like this one, again though I am very glad they have taken this stance and more proud to be a member of this community then any other I have been involved with on the web in many years.

Kudos Silky . . . and Kudos to Sigil for supporting such a stance, it does pose complications for them and I applaud their position of at least tacit support here as well. Sigil did not need to do this, but I am glad they had the guts to it anyway.

I hoped Silky Venom might be different because of the constant messages of "Thank you for logging in." But no matter how nice the original author intends the site to be, the moderators undoubtedly will screw up the broth. They are human, after all.

This very thread even lasted a while (ie. was allowed to continue) on the normal forums until we were called dirt. *shrug* We can take some hits, but yeah, it can go too far and this thread is a perfect example.

The fact is that I agree we can do more to help better organize the useful information from the not-so-useful information. We were having a discussion on that very topic just this morning, in fact. But bringing out a heavy-handed ban-stick and the edit/delete function we feel is the WRONG approach because it does exactly what we're trying not to do--give an unrealistic impression of the sense of the community.

People are gonna be upset that their client keeps crashing every hour, for example. Try to shut them up and you have an even worse problem on your hands. Give them some room to vent (within reason) and get a developer response and they will come away much less angry and more sympathetic.

But yes, totally agree. We can do better to triage the info in General forum, specifically. We realize that. But we're carefully evaluating our approach rather than rushing in blindly. And I'm sorry that some folks (like the OP) are too impatient and too shortsighted in this matter to realize that.

Totally disagree with the OP.

Practically all forums have Trolls and most people with experience from online gaming recognize this and can differentiate between them and actual posts by players.

of course, the difference being, if Sigil ran their own boards, you can bet they wouldn't put up with some of the nonsense that goes on here - "funny" and "clever" trolls like AngryNinja, who is nothing more than a racist who gets off on claiming he's "black" and spewing the racist stereotype filth that he does - yeh, an official forum wouldn't have that, I gaurantee you. I don't care if it's in the "Volcano" or not - it goes beyond the line that normal human beings adhere to. Personally if I hadn't seen worse trolls and flamers in the years I've been on other game forums, I'd be completely turned off by some of the crap here and not be too keen on being a part of Vangaurd. And there are plenty of "rational" sounding detractors who make a "good" argument by bending the truth around a tree - usually the loudest ones as well - those are the people visitors will see, and be turned away by what is basically lieing and skewing the truth. I don't think Sigil should stop linking this site, I love this place - but some "common sense" moderation would be nice. My 2 coppers. /shrug

Do you want to be moderated and banned and told what to say like a little child? Do you want to cover up if there ever really is a problem? Do you want to be told how to speak? I doubt it. You are here in the Volcano but only after you got abusive to the moderators, yes, abusive.

It is abusive to call them dirt, period. I have had counseling about verbal abuse and that is what you did to them. Labb and whoever else DOES NOT Have to read that and put up with it. I sure as heck wouldn't. You would not be in the volcano if it were me, you'd be like turned to ash by now.

So, while I see your original point it is lost with your mean spirited presentation.

You do have to accept how they choose to moderate, I have had to accept it even though 'sometimes' I don't like it either. But, at the end of the day I prefer how they moderate to people who moderate like silly hall monitors at a school. So I will take Silkys way since its the better of the two alternatives.

They have it right, but sometimes you have to turn the other cheek and just let posts that really rub you the wrong way go.

Right, but look at it this way... lets say the thread was deleted. What would happen when the lying scum who started it came back to look at the chaos he caused? It would result in a thread titled something like SIGIL HIDES THE TRUTH!!! He wouldn't tell the story again. It would just be something like "I found out a Sigil Dev was helping BotS cheat and the mods here censored my thread." You saw, based on the idiotic responses in the original thread that some people will believe anything. Also, since lots of Devs used to be or still are in SV that would lead to stupid consipracy theories about big guilds getting extra help, blah blah blah. Look at the thread. Someone mentioned the Deathtoll accusation. That was over a YEAR ago! The Devs addressed it right away and some people still believe it. I find the game a lousy, unimginative, piece of shit attempt at a "3rd generation MMORPG" and the future of MMO's. I think the developers believed when they started out they could deliver anything and make a bundle of cash, no matter that they changed their "vision" several times throughout its short lifespan (beta & release). BMQ believes his name is good enough to sell boxes. After attending both Fanguards and testing the game for 8 months, I believe I earned the right to say that.

I've never seen an individual go through a complete meltdown before. I knew the guy has "issues" as I've seen him post in other threads and it left me shaking my head even then.

In a way it's sad, and I hope he is'nt too upset in RL. Still, if he behaves like this on forums, it's hard to say just what he is like in person. I've met a few like him before and they are bitter with huge chips on their shoulders, about everything...

There are lessons to be learned even from people like this.
Don't take forums too seriously.
If you have pain, make it your pain and not those who you are in contact with (bear your own cross).

Mainly, think before you speak... this is why forums are great, as you have opportunity to organise thought for an intelligent and mature reply.
I'm no good myself at normal conversation, because I need time to think about my reply, and cannot come up with quick answers... and sometimes even forums don't afford me that advantage.
Still...

Anyways I hope he learns from this, it would be wasted otherwise.

You might feel that way, Arclan. But we've never said that we moderate even to our own liking. In fact, I haven't said I disagree that there is a lot of negativity here. This very thread even lasted a while (ie. was allowed to continue) on the normal forums until we were called dirt. *shrug* We can take some hits, but yeah, it can go too far and this thread is a perfect example.

The fact is that I agree we can do more to help better organize the useful information from the not-so-useful information. We were having a discussion on that very topic just this morning, in fact. But bringing out a heavy-handed ban-stick and the edit/delete function we feel is the WRONG approach because it does exactly what we're trying not to do--give an unrealistic impression of the sense of the community.

People are gonna be upset that their client keeps crashing every hour, for example. Try to shut them up and you have an even worse problem on your hands. Give them some room to vent (within reason) and get a developer response and they will come away much less angry and more sympathetic.

But yes, totally agree. We can do better to triage the info in General forum, specifically. We realize that. But we're carefully evaluating our approach rather than rushing in blindly. And I'm sorry that some folks (like the OP) are too impatient and too shortsighted in this matter to realize that.

My good friend also ran a guild, as a democracy. He didn't feel it was right to lay down the law. The result was a guild constantly in strife and folks were often complaining about those few members who knew how to work the system. The guild reformed at least once and then disbanded.

I guess my opinion of internet community is based largely on this experience.

I have to agree with the OP on this one. I left MMORPG for that very reason. Moderators lay down rules which THEY themselves must blindly adhere to. The problem is the flamers skate the edge of those rules and make the site a less pleasant place to be. And when someone like the OP posts TRUTH, it is officially "against the rules" and so the post gets trashed. Meanwhile, zounds of negative flames in other posts are left unmolested because, techincally, they don't violate the rules.

It's the timeless old addage of knowing how to work the system. Sad reality that drives decent people from chat forums. Which is why 90% of chat forums are indeed a cesspool of flamers who are as insulting and mean as the "official rules" will let them get away with.

Take this post as an example. The OP says this site isn't really a friendly place to be and the first handful of responses are just cowardly, senseless flames.

I hoped Silky Venom might be different because of the constant messages of "Thank you for logging in." But no matter how nice the original author intends the site to be, the moderators undoubtedly will screw up the broth. They are human, after all.

how dare you presume to tell me what i'm thinking? saying something is a cesspool is a statement, not a flame - this place is a cesspool of trolls. that is pretty clear and you know you would admit it - maybe not in that choice of words, possibly with much sugar coating and doublespeak - but i don't care for sugarcoating. I state it as it is - this place is full of trolls, a cesspool.

If i wanted to incite a flamewar i have some choice things i could say about Labyrrrynth - however I don't want to be his enemy, he is making me such with his incessant refusal to engage in reasonable moderation of this forums.

The thing that amazes me is all through this thread he never seems to realize or acknowledge that the same overall philosophy (one of let the idiots expose themselves as such) he is railing against here, is the same one that allows this thread and his opinions to he heard in the first place.

Its the ultimate censorship argument of the small minded, its always the same. He is not asking that everyone be censored, only those he doesnt agree with and those who do not present their arguments in a manner which he finds acceptable.

The existence of this thread is a delicious irony really, you guys should sticky it in the volcano for future laughs.

Well I'd had a run in with the guy in two other threads previously.
I'm not sure but I highly suspect he was targeting me specifically to the forum mods, prolly asking them to ban me, as well as others.

I was never rude to the guy, and always collected in my posts, never emotional.. Also never knowingly giving false information as he accused me of. I may be wrong sometimes, or wrong if it's a matter of taste or opinion (in that sence), but I value my integrity. Without it.. then yeah I'm a fool...

Nah this guy lost his credibility with me mainly because he displayed an immature emotional posting style, and backed it up with accusation and threats that were also meaningless and impotent. Just highlighting his stupidity.

Seriously I think he was just a kid, and if so... I hope he gets something out of this... that he can learn from past mistakes.

Denidil, you're digging yourself a hole here. First of all, Labyrrinth is a she not a him (last time I asked, anyway). Second of all, Labyrrinth RUNS this site and as as much authority as any of the red names, who run it equally. She isn't "just" a moderator. Third, its "refusal to engage in Denidil's idea of reasonable moderation," which, I'm sorry to say, is not "Labyrrinth's" idea of, and thus "Silky Venom's" idea of moderation. So suck it up and live with it. Or go somewhere else that is more friendly to you.
