Time equals achievement.

Things that take time and dedication are very statisfying for many people. Playin g a shooter game you bought, and finishing it 24 hours is nearly not as statisfying as finishing something that took you months.

You can't "BEAT" or "WIN" an MMO like you can a single player game. All you can do is have fun. Simply put - leveling is not fun for most people. Some people have fun PvP'ing, raiding, or doing whatever as long as its not level 13 in noobville.

You have fun interacting, socializing, exploring. All things that can be done outside of leveling fast.

I think that is an answer to why some individuals enjoy slower leveling. They enjoy the progress of their character, and do not want to hit max level and only have gear to be concerned with. I dont see what more of an answer you want other than to have fun...why else would one play a game?

Why do the nerds want to level slow? I haven't been given an answer yet other than "to have fun".

"To have fun" would be the wrong answer. "Fun" is a momentary, transient feeling... you feel it, and then it is done - you remember feeling it and why you felt it... but you have it and then it is over.

ACHIEVEMENT lasts - things that take time and effort... make you feel like you achieved something - that feeling lasts longer than the transient feeling of "fun".

This, however, is only ONE of the reasons - there are many... for example, I like a slower leveling curve so that I have more time to do more stuff. Think about the plethora of dungeons even at level 20 in this game.... level too fast - you don't have time to go visit more than one or two of them... level a bit slower, and you can go sample them all while they are still relevant.

There are many reasons.

Well I disagree with you, but I dont really need to argue that anyway. The main dynamic in an MMO is the exchange of stat points for XP points, this process is usualy reflected in combat mechanics, but it can be in other ways as well. Never the less, this dynamic IS what "playing an MMO" is, so I am not sure why anyone who does not like the dynamic of leveling would play an MMO, as that is what you do? Since this dynamic is again, THE GAME, similarly I dont understand why one would want to speed through it as fast as possible.

Again I dont care, to each his own, but if playing games I like makes me a nerd, what exactly is the person who plays a game they dont like . . . besides kind of pethetic?

The kind that need jobs. I wouldn't call them nerds. Probably loser's would be the correct terminology.

Time equals achievement.

Things that take time and dedication are very statisfying for many people. Playin g a shooter game you bought, and finishing it 24 hours is nearly not as statisfying as finishing something that took you months.

That depends on how you spend those months.

I *suck* at reflex games. I have the reaction speed of a tortoise on quaaludes. I have trouble with the fast-paced action of Pong.

Years ago, I got TIE Fighter for the PC. I played it from the first scenario all the way through to the last scenario of the two expansions the game came with. It took me months and greatly expanded my vocabulary.

It was worth it because, difficult as it was to play each scenario, I knew I just had to beat it and then I'd move on. Even if I had to play each scenario a dozen times to win it, sooner or later, I would, and I'd be rewarded with a new challenge and new plot developments and new ships to fly or fight against.

Now, suppose that, instead of having to complete each scenario once, I had to complete each one ten times.

Would that make the game ten times harder? No.

Would it make me more 'leet' if I did it? No.

Would I quickly get bored replaying scenarios not for the challenge of beating them, but solely because I had to beat them multiple times for no good reason? Yes.

Or let's take an FPS. I won Doom I with no cheats, a rare achievement for me. I died a lot. Again, it was worth it because I knew I was progressing, that each time I got a little further in before I was demon chow, discovering secrets, learning strategies.

Would the game have been more fun and challending if every corridor simply respawned over and over and I had to clear each level 10 times? No.

Taking a long time to reach a goal is very worthwhile -- when the progress itself is not artificially slowed by pointless repetition. A game isn't twice as hard if you have to kill twice as many mobs -- it's twice as hard if the mobs are twice as hard to kill. Without a sense of worthwhile progress following a reasonable investment of playtime, there's no point.

MMORPGs are Skinner boxes. If the box fails to dispense the yummy treats, though, the conditioning fails.

Anyone who doesn't know what a Skinner box is, look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinner_box). Now you understand the design of MMORPGs.

Even if my hand were frail and week, it wouldn't take much speed to hit a fatass forum troll, such as your self. You'd probably just take the hit instead of risking dumping your dorritos all of the floor if you shifted your girth.

Honestly? Because everytime I attempted to make a positive post and/or one with a subjective view I was called a kid, whiny/whatever.. Now you must all endure the wrath of the one called RAP!!!

Hmm, so let me grasp the logic here.

You get flamed by whiny people when a positive post is made, so you make a whiny post to flame everyone else? Right, that makes a lot of sense.

This, like the other thread that got moved to the Volcano, does nothing to help the forums. Maybe now that it's here it's appropriate though.

Please dude, the only reason I am trolling right now is because I am waiting to go to class at this place, it is called college. Maybe you have heard of it, they usually let people in who can count to 4 or higher.

If you really wanted to bring RL into it, that is fine I will give you my Myspace/pictures/tell you all about me, you can decide for yourself if I truly am what you say.

I love leveling its the best part of any game, what is not to like about progression, it wouldnt hurt my feelings if it took 1000 plus solid hours of grinding and questing to get to 50, 50 is overrated, im all about the trip screw the destination.

Some games leveling was actually fun....Vanguard tried to copy EQ for leveling because it "meant" something to gain a level.... Some players here want slow leveling because they want to enjoy thje content.....What content??....You want to kill that Lion 80000000 times instead of 80? Even if you move around you get the feeling that the mobs are the same thing over and over and over again whether its a mountain lion, snake, scorpion, wasp, or whatever.....The world pretty much feels the same wherever you are (ie lifeless).....There are players that can max level in a month or two but Im just bored senseless after a hour or two and find it similar to watching paint dry....
