Hello! I just started up Vanguard and made a Dark Knight. I was wondering how gear dependent the class is, how often should I be upgrading my gear, etc...

I plan on doing a lot of soloing as well. Was this a good class choice for that? Two handed weapons best for soloing? Sorry for all the questions, just looking to grasp a plan for my character's progression.

Thanks!

tanks are generally THE most gear dependent class. my bloodmage can do corpseruns naked with no issue. doing that with my DK is suicide. i try to keep my weapon upgraded. with my gear, i generally try to upgrade whenever i can get something that's a good 30-50 ac better than what i'm wearing. i'm always at 90-100% equipment expertise, so i'm probably on the extreme side when it comes to staying up to date, but that's part of the fun of the game for me.

DK are as gear dependant as it gets. Warrior/Paladin equally so.

Offensive fighters - moderately gear dependant.

Arcane casters - least gear dependant

Healers - somewhere in between Offensive fighters and Arcane casters.

Plus until it is fixed tanks also have thier items decay about 3 times as fast as others in the group.

I wouldnt say were so much gear dependant, more like the gear helps to outweigh some of the inadequacies were currently experiencing from bugs / tuning issues.

Alot of drk's complain of agro issues, but some of the better 2her's out there (im using a 75dps GS) basically take agro out of the equation because its so easy to keep it i dont use anything shy of torture and pure dps to hold agro.

Tanks are gear dependant by definition. Tanks are very straighforward at what they do. They have 2 primary functions.

1. Aggro control.
2. Damage mitigation.

Clearly our second function makes us EXTREMELY gear dependant. Having a tank in a group whose health drops like a rock is bad. Healers waste a lot of extra energy and in general the whole group won't feel comfortable.

Also gear provides tanks with attribute in addition to pure Armor Class. Str/Dex/Con DIRECTLY affect our ability to tank since it increases block/avoidance/HP.

So, if you plan to do some serious tanking and have a good reputation I feel it's necessary to get the best gear you can afford.
