View Full Version : Vanguard Should Cap Hours Played Per Day

Vanguard should do the responsible thing and cap the # of hours an account can play per day.
I propose a cap of 3 hours per day Monday to Friday and 5 hours on weekends. Alternately, you could do a cap of 100 hours per month. Once you hit your cap, the game boots you out.
Here are the reasons to do this:
(1) It prevents unhealthy sedentary obsessive behaviors
(2) It makes it more expensive for gold farmers to farm
(3) It makes powerleveling services unpalatable
(4) It prevents people getting to level 50 in a month
(5) China does it. Vanguard should do it now before the US government regulates them the way China does.
(6) It prevents obsessive behavior resulting in divorces, job losses and grades failing.
If you're an invalid, bedridden or housebound, you can submit a notarized written waiver to Sigil directly with a doctor's note. Then you can play as much as you want.
IF UR NOT HANDICAPPED, THERE IS NO RESPONSBILE REASON TO PLAY VANGUARD MORE THAN 100 HOURS A MONTH. I DARE U TO GIVE ME A GOOD REASON. U CANNOT.

The troll is at it again.
I shouldn't dignify this with a response, but I will. I play more than 100 hours a month because I can. Because I enjoy it, because its my quality time with my boyfriend, because I have friends in and out of game that play with me... Who are you to judge me because I have alot of free time? I work 8 hours a day, come home, play for 8 hours, and then sleep for 7 (the extra hour is travel time to and from work hehe). Weekends I'm on and off during the day and then put in my normal 8 hours at night. Its how I choose to spend my quality time. its no different than my mother who watches TV all day, or my friend that knits for hours on end.

You want a responsible reason? How about "Because I damn well might just feel like it...Thats why." Yep, I said it. Because I want to. Thats all the reason you need.
Next you are going to go on about how maybe I drive my big ol' gas hungry SUV too much or how I should be mowing my lawn with a goat instead of a lawnmower to be more environmentally friendly.

This is not a new concept and I have seen this come up time and time again in just about every MMO I have played.
Its essentially the idea behind a "relax server" which at least in the games that I have played never came to fruition.
The concept of forcing this upon players is rather silly...you would kill your user base if you did this...it wouldnt affect me in the slightest as the 3wkd 5wkn is about the most time I ever have to play but the idea of regulating your players sounds like it belongs in a game played in another country.
I work full time, have many responsibilities out of work, and other hobbies so I just dont have the time. But if I take a week vacation, I would want at least the option to spend more than 3 hours of my free time doing what I want and playing my game of choice.
I use to play my last MMO about 5 hours a night during the week when life was "easier" and I didnt get overweight, I didnt lose my job (was promoted during the time), met the woman I am now engaged to, blah blah...there is no harm in it for responsible players that simply have the free time to use as they wish.
So back to the orginal subject Who's excited for March Madness any thought who will be in the final 4..

This responsibility doesnt fall into the realm of the game companies....it is placed on the users. Do they always act responsible? No, of course not.
But the majority of gamers do not develop problems like you are talking about. Some will...just like some people will drink too much and get in their cars and do something stupid (bad comparison..sorry...its the first that came to mind and I am in a hurry).
Doing something like this would kill the industry..it may prevent a handful of people from having personal issues...but its also going to prevent thousands from enjoying their free time as they wish.
Should we also set the speed limiters in cars to 70MPH because its not responsible for the auto maker?
This is going to get way too philosophical for this forum I am guessing, I can see the point that is being made, but its scope is way beyond just a MMO, its pointing at taking personal responsibilities away from consumers and placing them on producers.

anything addictive is usually regulated: alcohol, smoking, drugs, gambling, stock market investing, etc.
online gaming is very new, that's why it's not regulated. but like any other potentially addictive activity, it should be.

I am not following you now...I understand the governmental regulations on those things but they are regulated in a much different manner than you are proposing for a MMO.
I can go out and buy smokes or booze until I die...I can go from store to store and buy as much as one will sell me then move to the next. You can buy enough alchohol in one store at the same time(at least in my state) to kill several people.
How do the regulations between these things tie into what you are saying about games? If you could only buy one pack of smokes a week...sure I would see your point...but I am missing it right now.

While it is true that China does have some more stringent anti-gaming addiction laws, limits on gameplay time are not very effective, as they generally do not apply to anyone over 18 and can be circumvented by simply having multiple accounts. I can understand why people are opposed to such measures, but at the same time, there are less intrusive ways to handle play time limitations.
First, switch to an hourly billing plan, or offer plans with certain numbers of hours per month, and then charge overage fees, the way cellphone companies do. While you can play as much as you like, it will cost you more to play beyond a certain amount. This doesn't explicitly limit playtime, but does provide incentives to self-regulate.
Second, parents will want ways to limit their children's playtime. As this generation of gamers gets older, there will be more second generation gamers - the kids of the people who grew up on UO and EQ, and now play alongside their kids. There is increasing demand for family accounts, and with that come the logical parental controls like enforced playtime limits, and perhaps things like restrictions to certain servers or playtime between certain hours of the day. These sorts of controls will be especially important as we see more games marketed to younger kids specifically.
Third, design games around shorter play sessions, and implement systems of diminishing returns for extended playtime. WoW already does this, as does EQ2 with vitality. What this means is designing gameplay such that individuals can tailor it to their own schedules. VG is particularly bad at this sort of design, while EQ2 and to a lesser extent WoW excel at it. At a larger level, one needs to look at the ethics of game design with regards to addictive behavior,. Behaviorist psychology gives us very good insight into how to build a stimulus-response system that encourages a certain behavior. For some things, this is very useful, for others, it can be socially damaging. Game designers need to recognize what they are capable of and design with these capabilities in mind.

What about people that are disabled? i was in a wheel chair for 5 months, it freaking sucked. I can now walk a little bit, but when i couldnt, i had TONS of free time. YOu cant do much but sit or lay there. I was playing Everquest at the time. It took up a ton of my "free time" as i had mostly 24 hours a day for free time.
My point is you just cant put a ban on stuff like that. USA is suppsedly free. This will not fly.

I just see some pretty ****ed up interpretations of "Land of the Free" that have nearly no relationship to what the phrase is actually refering to.
No, it doesn't mean that you get everything without spending money.

U CANNOT.
Yes, genius idea. Let's make people pay for a game, but then limit their play time despite paying to play. You, sir, are a bigot.

I guess Sigil would have to send over a physician to document your condition. Then they would have to send a notorized, signed affidavit proclaiming you are indeed "fit" for more than the time alloted to the rest of us.
You'd have to have a check-up every 3 months to ensure you're still in a condition allowed to play more than 100 hours a month, which means either that physician Sigil has on retainer has to return, or you have to haul your ass to a doctor to tell you "Yep, you're still wheelchair bound. I'll get this notorized and sent off via registered, insured mail right away".

they already do it in china. i think the usa should be next. hopefully hillary clinton & co. will get something like this regulated if the game companies refuse to do the responsible thing and regulate themselves.
Capital idea. I'm writing Sentator Clinton now. Since you seem in the spirit of the moment, I've recommended the use of emminent domain to seize your (or your family's) property for use as the future headquarters of the Federal Internet Quality Management Regulatory Agency.
Since you advocate for doing things the chinese way, I imagine small quibbles like personal property rights and freedom to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are easily squelched by your willingness to see to the 'common good'.

Ok this is obvious to everyone but the OP apparantly.
This guy is simply eaten up with jealousy over not being able to play as much as he'd like. That's it in a nutshell. He feels that because he can't play as much as he'd like, he wants to have others' playtime regulated so they can't get too far ahead of him. It's simple really. I'm sure he will deny it but I really don't care (especially when I'm just so danged right about something).
I for one would love to be able to play more than I currently do. I really enjoy the game. It keeps me from blowing way too much money when I go out and it keeps me in contact with friends whom I've had since childhood. In fact if it weren't for MMOs I wouldn't be as in touch with others as I currently am. Games should never be regulated. That's the bottom line. People just need to take personal responsibility for their own actions. No one should need to have their hand held by the government. That viewpoint seems oddly right-wing to me yet he trumpets the arrival of Hillbillery.
What a sad sad little man. I can't believe that he's allowed to post here. What a shame.
