What's the difference between "strategy" and "tactics"?

Thanks,

Sergo

Hiya Sergo...have a cookie? *offers a plate*

Strategy is what you would use to look at the whole of a battle and make a plan. Tactics is what for instance a unit leader would use when figuring out how to strike.

So the best way to remember it is strategy = overview or large numbers, tactics = hands on or small numbers.

Hope that helps :)

Extending on what LadySirse posted.

Tactical : tactics
Strategic : strategy

A tactical weapon would be one used against a localized target while a strategic weapon would be used against a nation or large army

Thanks for the replies. Took me a while to remember I had posted this thread. :o I was trying to describe CoH combat to someone and couldn't decide which word to use. Apparently, "tactical" would be correct.

edit: Are there fresh cookies?

Strategy is what the coach brings to the game. Tactics is what the Quarterback uses on the field to bring that strategy to fruition.

Late, I know, but felt like typing..... sorry.

I was never told that when I joined! Is that a joining requirement, or is it just a trend within your staff?

Or perhaps these mental conditions are just catching as soon as you join the boards, and are therefore inescapable.

Currently it only plagues our staff, however it appears to be a growing epidemic by the speed at which Eclipse contracted his "problem"

Strategy is what the coach brings to the game. Tactics is what the Quarterback uses on the field to bring that strategy to fruition.

That's more the way I've always understood it. I think of strategy as a planning from outside the fray what you're going to do once you're in the fray. Tactics is planning spontaneously in the thick of it or using trained methods spontaneously.

..yeah..maybe I'm just complicating things.. =P

Tactical might be a sequence of moves in a chess game.

Strategy might be deliberately losing every single 'friendly' chess game, so that when you and your friend bet money on it you will have lulled them into a false sense of security so that you can completely wipe them out.

My chess strategy trap is still waiting to be sprung ... so far everyone I play are convinced I am a walkover. Muahaha!

They'll see! They'll aaaall see.

Only if your perception skill and weapon skills are maxed out.

I would say it's something like this:

Strategy is demonstrated by deciding to strike a particular target that is of importance, in order to gain an advantage.

Tactics is demonstrated in how you actually strike the target. Airstrikes, following by artillery, followed by small unit attacks.

Strategy is the overall plan, and how you guess at the response of the enemy. Tactics is the mechanics of executing the strategy.

Instinct is something else altogether. It's instincitive to keep your head down while being shot at.
