View Full Version : Why can't some races choose alignment and starting location?

I understand the need for some races to start as a specific alignment, like dark elves being evil and high elves being good, but was there a reason that they made other races good or evil only?

I don't understand why all humans MUST be good. It just doesn't make sense. And given that humans have a different "allowance" for picking attributes than everyone else, it forces us to give up that "allowance" if we want to play on the Shadow side. In addition, half elves aren't much different than humans, in that they can usually be good or evil.

Finally, if a human chose to be evil, they could be started in a different location than where good humans start...

The reason I started thinking about this is because of this page:

Notice that two good races have the possibility of having higher stats in two of the most important attributes for a druid, one of those being Intelligence, which is arguably THE most important attribute for a druid. On the other hand, only one evil race has the possibility of having the higher stats. In other words, if we want to have a stat that could be *high* on the Shadow side, we HAVE to play as Vulmane (ugh?) and that stat HAS to be Wisdom, AND we HAVE to start on Thestra, far from where my guild is playing. If the shadow's high stat was intelligence, and the order got the other two (by having two races) it may be better balanced, but still not optimal.

This seems like poor game balancing to me. Personally, it seems to me that half elves and wood elves should be able to choose good OR evil, making it possible for Shadow characters to get higher intelligence. As it is, Shadow Druids are basically screwed out of having a possibly higher intelligence because of this.

Does anyone else see what I mean?

Would be nice if all of the human races at the very least could choose shadow or order. That would at least add some more races for Shadow besides Dark Elf for every class other than the Druid, Shaman, Ranger/rogue, Dread knight/warrior. Which holy crap if you want to roll anything besides a shaman/druid for those entire 2 trees you can only go dark elf. If you want to roll monk/dsc/sorcerer/psionicist/cleric/bmg/bard you can only be dark elf. Our lack of choices is kind of depressing
