Rogue vs ranger or Offensive class discussion:

ok, its all unknown but being an old school rogue, Im for the most part planing on going that route again as I LOVE that playstyle, but after reading a blurb about the ranger having a similar characteristc or so, Id like to see what peps is thinking about the 2 classes.

I understand them to be offensive, and can see the rogue as a high burst damage (reading the time invis vs damage thing) but also being a drizzt fan would love to play that style also.

Now I HATED the EQ1 ranger class and very glad to see they took a bit of diffrent aproch to it. What Im getting the feeling though that its a knda hybrid class of hunter/druidish.

anyway thought Id start a thread about the offensive classes...

Well, I loved my EQ Ranger! My first character was a druid, but I ended up playing a cleric as my main. I like the druid/warrior hybrid thing, with the naturey druid spell line (although my ranger only made it to her 20s). I also really liked fletching and archery. So at first I was a little disappointed that the VG ranger wouldn't be like that, but maybe it will be fun--I guess we won't know until we learn more.

I'm also a little disappointed that the VG ranger won't be an archer...or at least I feel you should have the option to make it one.
Microsoft's Asheron's Call performed the best archer class structure ever, I'd like ot see them carry it over.

Last I heard (http://www.silkyvenom.com/forums/faq.php?faq=3_16#faq_3_16_1), Vanguard Rangers could shoot stuff lots.

yea its tough, I saw the screen shot of the DE ranger duel wielding,,, I likie :)

but being a hardened rogue, I dont wanta miss out on the burst damage (damage stat whore here, I like to see huge hits, even if the over all dps isnt uber)

the invis thing is also a big one, I love to sneak into places I shouldnt, and PvP....

If I ever delve into non-healing and non-tanking roles, it's always been an archer.
In one game I played, I was an archer tank! Funny I know. Because of how they did their attributes in Asheron's Call, an archer was free to take all the necessary tanking skills. Man I loved that game...skill system still unmatched as far as I'm concerned. I've always thought of bows/crossbows as high sustained damage that could equal or surpass a caster, depending on the mob. But I think in this game, too many casters would cry all over their robes if that happened.

From what little bit has been released on the Ranger, it appears to be a lot like the Ranger from Dark Age of Camelot. It will share a lot in common with the rogue but they will each have different foci. Combat styles will likely be very similar, both gain stealth, etc, but for example, it looks like Rangers get Spells and Tracking, where a Rogue gets Pick Pockets, Open Lock and Disarm Traps. I will definately be watching these 2 classes very closely.

I've played a tank in pretty much every MMO I've played. Recently, in GW and a couple other MMORPGs I've played rangers and other damage dealers and I think that's the class I'll use in Vanguard. From the looks of things, the rangers are coming along great.

Also, I can't help but think that the similarity between the ranger in those screenshots and Drizzt is far from a coincidence

I think its the particular player who customized his character to resemble Drizzt...I just hope ranger is available to Dark Elves...as it wasn't in EQ I. Very sad day for R.A. Salvitore fans.

Played a Ranger in EQ1 up to lvl 52... sucking the whole way there. I just hope Vanguard does it right. We got gimped in EQ2 also because they took away the ability to fire your bow while moving. Eww.

But it really made no sense in EQ for Dark Elves to be rangers, rangers being attuned with nature and Dark Elves living underground in the rocks. The only reason Drizzt was a ranger was due to him living on the surface for a while with the guy who's name I can't recall off the top of my head. He was the only one if I am recalling the story correctly.

I played a rogue in EQ, and a Mercenary in DAoC. I enjoy being the light fighter dealing alot of damage and can take a hit or two. But i hate playing tanking classes. So, whichever class works out to be what i want i'll pick. I've always liked the Aragorn style of ranger more than the D&D druid warrior hybrid type.
