View Full Version : High-seas battles?

My friend has kept on rambling about how he'd like to be a 'pirate'. Starting to get annoying...
He says that he's heard that it'll be possible for open PvP to take place on the high-seas, and that it'd be a lawless place about how you can loot other's items and stuff. He goes on to say about how he think that this would be awesome and wouldn't mind losing his stuff, then gets almost offended when I tell him I wouldn't wanna lose my gear to some jerk griefer.
Lemme try and clear this rumor up: has there been any talk of this? If that's how it is, I certainly won't travel by water very often :P. I'm just tired of him singing the praises of open PvP and the ability to loot the corpses of your enemies.
Please and Thank j00 :)

I seriously doubt they would let this happen on a normal server. If they know that the largest body of players does not like non-consensual PvP, and especially does not like losing their items, why would they allow that to happen on boats when boats are such a large part of the game?
Brad is always talking about alternate ruleset servers, though, so maybe they will have some PvP servers where it's like that.

I have heard no talk regarding this in particular, but this is what I gather from other talk:
You will be fighting PvE out at sea such as NPC pirates. At the same time, there will be alternative ruleset 'open PvP' servers available. On these open PvP servers it logically follows that you will be able to play pirates and killing each other. Looting eachothers items is unknown, as we do not know how their 'open PvP' alternative server will handle this, pirate or not.
On normal servers, I doubt players can partake in piracy upon each other whilst sailing the high seas, in normal circumstances.
As I said, I do not know for sure. Sigil may want to make the ocean a fierce and treacherous place, but I doubt they would allow open PvP throughout the entire ocean on normal servers.
But keep in mind, if normal servers might have duelling arenas for players to pitch themselves against one another (its quite possible) then it is also possible there will be contained areas where open player piracy may be allowed.
We'll just have to listen out for when they start to spill the beans on ships. :)

I think those two responses give me the right to a bit of gloating and an 'I-told-you-so' speech :)
Seriously though, this is good to hear. I had very serious doubts that Sigil would impliment this and it's good to hear that they will not. I enjoy PvP, but not when my items are at stake. It's enough of a shot to my pride ;)
Thanks guys.

Hold the gloat, my friendly pirate-hater.
I have different, although sketchy, news to afford you.
Although not being released upon retail, there HAS been talk on the OVF from Devs about ship combat and mounted combat all in the same. From what I can tell, as long as there are ranged attacks, and you're on a pvp server, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to kill someone on a boat. Boarding ships and stealing them are different i think. I don't believe those will be in at launch, but ideas are out there.
Your friend saw a dev tease the community with a story like that one, and you can now gloat that he will be waiting quite a while to be a pirate...perhaps the first expansion.
