It’s a fantasy game like all MMO's....
Who are you pretending you are?? and upright walking dog that can talk? Or variations of one?
A little rat creature?
A giant?
We all pretend in these games.
To address the Quest portion of the game, LOTRO is superior in the quest department. It has a nice progression that keeps flowing as you level and never ends. Name 1 quest in Vanguard that does that??

Except its the same quest for everyone, and its short, its like a MMO on rails...I played Lotro to level 30 with 2 chars in beta, it wasnt very fun, it looked "ok" but it got boring past level 20...VG still entertains me.

I agree, it does have a training wheel feel to it, and Vanguard has alot of freedom. Not for long though with the port stones on altars. The world will shrink.
But think of it this way, people are giving Vanguard alot of time to fix their game, if the same happens to LOTRO it can and will shape up to be a better MMO in the end.... and its so damn pretty.... :)

LOTRO is the kiddie pool, its core design has alot of stuff i dont like, i like more options, i see potential in VG as long as the holes are filled and the water is pumped out so teh boat dosent sink, it will be a sturdy ship in a year.

The only thing that worries me is the expansion of the content.
They are supposed to be progressing the storyline until RotK. But what the hell are they going to do after that? Thats supposed to take a year and a half or so. Thats still a game in its infancy.
People are giving Vangaurd shit for not being the end all be all after 3 months. Its starting to become a worse game in my opinion (I only speak for myself) but it still has more potential than a game that is linear in content.
Its like playing an MMO about the titanic, the ****ing boat sinks at the end.

Vanguard cost more to make and is generating less revenue than the aforementioned POS.

Gamers who play a game for fun and are enjoying what they are playing could really care less about the money involved, sorry. We don't care of a crappy game like lotr is in the black with it's budget, or generates more revenue. It has no bearing on which game people feel is a "better" game.

Well, I'm gonna be serious for a moment, may the Volcano gods forgive me, but you should care.
No, you probably shouldn't care about how much they spend on coffee or stationary, but you should care about the overall health of the game. Unless you would just be content to have them announce one day 'sorry, we can't turn a profit so we have to shut down.. thanks for playing!'?
I would imagine most people would be a bit miffed if that occured.
So you probably should have a little concern and understanding of the larger picture and realize that these games cost a lot of money, and if they don't make a lot of money back.. then they don't stay operating.. or they go on life support, have like 1 dev there to fix typos in the quest journal every few weeks and that's it.

i understand that. We want the game continue, people to get paid, new stuff to go in - because they have the money to do so. The problem I have here is people making sweeping statements saying one game "wins" or is "better" than another because one generates more revenue or is critically acclaimed than the other. Of course LoTR is going to pull in more money and fans (in the short term at least - we'll see if it has "legs"), that's a no-brainer.

Ive played both and Lotro was fun for all of 3 weeks, its awesome for a New MMO gamer, or young people not looking for depth, but for anyone who has played mmos or likes something with just a LITTLE depth...it just dosent deliver, VG has MANY MANY issues, but they are being fixed, and in the long run VG will probably wind up doing better. Turbine has a known track record for MMO's i dont see this one being different.

ANYONE?
You sure about that? From what I am seeing, even some of the most critical hardasses are giving LotRO rave reviews. Huge thread over at FOH full of 'hardcore' people and whatever else you want to call them who are loving the game.
Turbine has a track record.. so does anyone that has released more than 1.
AC1 is still going strong. It's widely considered to have the single best live content update schedule in history. AC2 flopped, oh well. Shit happens. DDO was mediocre. It's actually a good game for what it is.. it's just not a mass appeal game. It's guild wars, in a crappy setting that was forced on them by WotC.
And now you have LotRO.
Trust me, I used to hate Turbine as much as anyone after the disappointment of DDO.. but give credit where it is due. LotRO is doing exceedingly well and they really got their shit together this time around.

How does Vanguard have depth?? You must be a very shallow minded person to think Vanguard is a "deep" game.
LOTRO is at least based on an amazing set of novels by an amazing author.
Vanguard is based on a cookie cutter template of good race vs bad race borrowed from every other MMO that was created before it, and the lore is horrible to go along with it. They threw a two things in that were unique.. Diplomacy mini game and Boats.... Big whoop!
Seriously, the only reason why you defend this title is because of this forum and your guilds affiliation with the game. Do you have an Alt account where you spew the truth about Vanguard? Id like to read those posts.
Can Vanguard be a great MMO? Sure it can. Just as much as LOTRO can be a great MMO. LOTRO has the advantage though... it began waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of Vanguard in almost every aspect.

Vanguard has more classes, abilities, customazation, and races strating out.
Vanguard has no instancing, you can explore all buildings you see, you can visit all places you see, its more open.
Vanguard has a crafting system that LOTRO cant even compare to.
Vanguard...DIplomacy....its awesome, esp if you take the time ti understand whats happening.
Lotro is based on a set of novels...Big deal, they didnt even pick a decent time for the game to take place....game cant last forever, eventually frodo gets to mount doom and wins the interweb....
I could go on with this but since it opinion i dont see a point, kinda like your misguided beliefe that LOTRO is a decent game...

Vanguard has a basically 4 classes. Tank, healer, nuker, melee. Sure they may claim to have 15 of them, but they all just kinda blur together.. and balance isn't even in the Sigil dictionary. I'll take 7 defined and refined classes over 15 piles of mud any day.
Ooo, you can go in that building.. and it's empty. Thanks for hitching, it's totally worth it!
Crafting.. lol. One look at the economy and state of crafting is enough to make that argument leak like the Titanic.
And a card game.. woopty freaking doo. I don't play MMOs to play Pokemon.

More Clasess? Pretty much the same. Nuke, Melee, Heal, Hybrid. 4 if you ask me. The rest of the clasess take away from the game because it makes creating a group MUCH harder. If you only need to pick from 4 clasess for a solid group you have a much better chance at finding them all. Sometimes more isnt better.
Races?? HAHA... If you looked at all the clasess you will notice VERY quickly that most of them are from the same character model. Throw in a few dogs, rats, ect... and you have about 4 solid "Different" classes.
Abilities?? Sure, Vanguard has more. Just like EQ2 you need to have 12 action bars to load them all out on your screen. I think its nice that LOTRO simplifies this by cutting it down to a MUCH more manageable level. Im not sure whats better yet.
Vanguard has no instancing, you can explore all buildings you see, you can visit all places you see, its more open.
LOTRO has quick instancing. IMO its much better to control content, its also better to control lag. It also means a much more complete world. In Vanguard you can walk into 10,000 worthless homes with nothing in them and no reason to do it. YAY! Sounds like a timesink to me. In LOTRO you know that the door your walking in has well thought out content inside.
Vanguard has a crafting system that LOTRO cant even compare to.
The Crafting system in Vanguard is boring and pretty much just like every crafting system in most MMO's. Nothing revolutionary.
Vanguard...DIplomacy....its awesome, esp if you take the time ti understand whats happening.
Its a mini game and its really just another time sink.
Lotro is based on a set of novels...Big deal, they didnt even pick a decent time for the game to take place....game cant last forever, eventually frodo gets to mount doom and wins the interweb....
Just like the ongoing strugle in Vanguard. The Vanguard world is just as static.
I could go on with this but since it opinion i dont see a point, kinda like your misguided beliefe that LOTRO is a decent game...
Ill give the same answer as I do for the 8 mil subs in WOW.... 1 Million subs and counting bud... what is Vanguard DOWN to? 130k? Please... let the numbers do the talking.
In the end Vanguard is STILL a buggy mess with crappy textures thrown together and very little though to content. Have you seen the water fall by Leth? Can you possibly make that look anymore like 10 year old technology? Vanguard is hardly 3rd gen. LOTRO is 3rd gen. Simple as that.

Just like LOTRO SWG has a name... its the only reason why its still running. Adside from that, the other reason is Dev costs were paid for because SWG was at one point a success... unlike Vanguard.
Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom! :volcano:
