It appears the lessons learned from VG's poor release was not lost on Mystic.

It's been an interesting year for us at EA Mythic, a year filled with new challenges, new opportunities and of course, a year filled with WAR! We have watched Warhammer Online become one of the most highly anticipated MMORPGs in the world as it garners praise from the press, earns kudos from the community and receives enthusiastic support from our partners and friends at Games Workshop. I'm happy to say that the task of bringing WAR to life is going well here at EA Mythic. However, we have important news to share and as always, we want you, the WAR community, to be the first to know.
We have made the decision to move our ship date for the US and Europe to the first quarter of 2008. (Release dates for Asia will be announced at a later date.) Since our acquisition by EA, we have been afforded many wonderful development opportunities and we plan to take full advantage of everything that is available. This includes taking several additional months to make the best MMORPG possible.
At this time we have completed most of the work on our first racial pairing – Dwarfs and Greenskins – and the team is now building Empire and Chaos. These new zones really kick butt and the team did a fantastic job of incorporating the feel of war and Warhammer into these areas. This racial pairing is the embodiment of all that I hoped for when we made the decision to partner with GW.
However, when we looked back at our work on the Dwarf and Greenskin pairing, we could not say the same thing. While these areas were good, they were not great and glorious. We have always said that WAR was going to be great and we will not settle for anything less. So the team has gone back to our initial pairing and conducted an intense review of their work. They have implemented new ideas and applied all that they have learned over the past nine months. What has already emerged from this dedicated time of focused polish is nothing short of spectacular. In the Dwarf and Greenskin zones there is now more war, more Warhammer, and more of what makes WAR great.
By extending our development time, we'll be able to do these in-depth reviews several times prior to launch to ensure all areas of WAR benefit from the experience of ongoing development. EA is totally supportive of our decision and are behind us 100%. We all believe WAR will be the next great MMORPG and being part of EA affords us the time we need to make it so. It is EA's ongoing commitment to quality that will allow us, and other EA studios, to deliver great games, now and in the future.
This change to our ship date is probably not the news you were hoping to hear. In the end, we'll be able to reward your patience with a truly next-generation MMORPG that will make GW proud, all of us at EA thrilled and most importantly, you, the players, as happy as a Black Orc in battle. We only get one chance at a successful launch, and we plan to catapult this one over the walls of Altdorf.
WAR is coming!

I still think Vanguard has the potential to be the best mmorpg out there, it just needs the players seeing that the devs are trying their best to please them.

I'm actually happy they're pushing it back. When it comes out I want a finished, polished product. If I don't get that product until 2009, I'd still be much happier.
And by the way...shouldn't this go in the industry chat?

if i ever make an MMO, i'm going to plan my release date for Jan 1, 2010, finish it by Jan 1, 2008, tell people i'm going to release it Jan 1, 2009, and then push it back to Jan 1, 2010 just so i can look like i'm the smartest damn person on the earth.

Definitely the best MMO out there, or even for the foreseeable future. All the other upcoming games cater to the PVP crowd, something that's always been a fringe group of the MMO playerbase, even in WoW (though to a lesser extent). Point for point, no other game even comes close to VG.

Logging in to play an unfinished game was kind of underwhelming. It took alot of the magic out of that first impression you get out of the game. I was thinking about how bad they messed up with this game as well while I was reading that newsletter.

And that is exactly what Vanguard is. POTENTIAL. Now if they can just execute so that the potential is realized, then VG *could* be great. By the track record, I don't think that is happening anytime soon.

Potential is like vapor ware. Until it's realized it's forever more nothing but a nice idea. Although if you want to look at things from a pessimistic viewpoint, everything is a failure until it succeeds. :ninja:

You have to realize that someone could say "Well, Warhammer Online will have characters that are rendered as pixels" and someone on these forums would go "SEE! THEIR PIXELS ARE OBVIOUSLY BETTER. THEY HAVE LEARNED FROM HOW HORRIBLE VANGUARD IS."

Laymens version:
We've been watching our forums and see all of you drooling like children at the candy store window and because of this we have come to the conclusion that WarHammer is the most anticipated MMO in the industry.
Laymens Version:
We consulted the experienced people over at EA and while we thought Warhammer was the shnizzle, it turned out it was the bomb, so EA gave us a couple more months to get our act together. So were delaying the release for US and Europe. Asia... Well.... We really don't know when we'll have it ready for your folks. So sorry.
Laymens Version:
I honestly thought we had it down and the Dwarfs and the Greenskins were looking great. I couldnt ask anymore out of our partner with GW.
Laymens Version:
However, once we sobered up we realized just how crappy it really was what we had done and couldnt possibly put it out like that because we know that the WAR community would crucify us. So I've cracked the whip over the heads of our employees and told them no more twinkies till they get it right. They went right to work and redid the zones for the Dwarf bunnys and the Grenskins and once we sober up again we think this time around it will be the shnizzle.
Laymens Version:
EA decided that what we had done really wasn't good enough to put their name on, so they sent us back to the drawing board and told us to get it right or we would be another development house that they would seperate and or disband us.
EA is totally of a mindset that unless the game meets their desires for a MMORPG they will cut off our heads. They are giving us till Jan 2008 to get it right or else.
Laymens Version:
We really didn't learn from our competitions mistakes in the past and decided that we would make a truly next-generation MMORPG that will require nothing less but state of the art computers, but on a good note... It will allow our product to stay fresh and alive well into the next decade. You just have to deal with laggyness and hitching till the Next-Generation computers are available to play WARHAMMER at which time our graphics may look a bit dated but it will play oh so smooooooth.
Till next time.

I agree, i think it is as well. Its got some problems. I think the core of the game is awesome. Now they just need a little more tweaking for performance, and some damn raid mobs.

I disagree. By the time they get the performance and content up to where it should be it will have more competition than just LOTRO, which is like the guildwars of MMORPGS imho.
There is: Gods and Heroes, Age of Conan, The Chronicles of Spellborn. All of them will release before 08 and are arguably of quality >= LOTRO.
Vanguard is now looking at an upperbound of success equal to AO's. :p

Dont confuse quality with your preference of gamemechanics/features please. Those kind of misunderstandings is exactly what gets those silly flamewars started. LOTRO might be a tad easy going for your taste (and mine) but it is still great quality though. Same goes for Guild Wars.
Im very curious too how The Chronicles of Spellborn turns out to be. Interesting world and skillsystem.

Call me over simplistic but if Sigil delivered the game they promised, to the polish they promised, it would have been a complete and roaring utter success.
But because they didn't, it isn't.
Everything else, like talk of 'potential' is just a smokescreen, developed by Sigil to propaganda you into thinking they have everything under control.
VG will be a good game....in about 2 years, just like EQ2.
