View Full Version : Any Videophiles?

Any videophiles around? :D

Here is my thing... I really don't have the money right now, and realistically unless some magical school financial aid comes (which I currently don't expect any) this likely won't happen for about 6 months (if funding does happen it could happen very soon, like in the next couple of months.)

I need to move within the next 5 months, this is basically by force not by choice (roomies want me out ASAP  ), and I currently have this 1st gen old school tube style HDTV. It's a decent screen and all, but being ~250 lbs, there is no way I could move it by myself. More than likely when I move I will be doing it all myself, so taking it with me might not be an option at all.

So... I've been hoping the school gods drop some unexpected monies my way and allow me to upgrade to a new LCD screen when I need to move. This would, of course, save space and be light enough that I could move it myself next time I need to move it.

I have been keeping my eye on the Sony Bravias. However, Amazon, my new very good friend, has shown me a Samsung screen which has nearly the exact same features as the screen I was watching. So here is the breakdown...

Samsung LNT4665F (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LNT4665F-1080p-LCD-HDTV/dp/B000NVLQ72/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1198837866&sr=1-2) $1600, 46" - currently the #2 best seller, 213 reviews, 4.5 stars
vs.
Sony Bravia KDL-40W3000 (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Bravia-KDL-40W3000-1080p-HDTV/dp/B000SB7XMY/ref=sr_1_52?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1198837751&sr=1-52) $1775, 40" - currently the #52 best seller, 16 reviews, 4.9 stars

So here is the thing... looking at the Crutchfield site for the Sony KDL-40W3000 (http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=146350&i=15840W3000&tp=161) vs. the Samsung LN-T4665F (http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?showAll=N&g=146350&i=305LNT4665&tp=161) they look pretty much identical but the Samsung is 6" bigger and ~$175 cheaper. (At least today. Amazon seems to have some odd fluxuations in prices over time. I've seen that Bravia shift by a couple hundred over the past few months.)

Is this correct? Is the Samsung basically identical, just cheaper and slightly bigger? Or is there something I'm missing? I've seen a few posts about clouding in reviews, so I'm not sure which screens are affected by this.

I also noticed that the Sony Bravia XBR KDL-40XBR4 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TAEGMO/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I15TMTEEX9E7EW&colid=2AUO31RTJHEVA) 40" is ~$2150. Does anyone know if this model would be quite a bit better? The stats only look a hair better outside of the 120 MHz refresh rate. Granted this might be a bigger difference when I'm watching my Blu-Ray, I don't know.

Also, the first of the LED backlit screen types are out. One is the Samsung LNT4081F (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V9HZDA/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I34ISVCVV5JD1L&colid=2AUO31RTJHEVA) 40" at ~$2600, only a bit more again over the Sony XBR, but considerably more expensive than the two I'm looking at.

So um... yeah... fair bit of rambling with teh rabb1t brain, and again, without magical unexpected funding showing up I likely can't afford anything for quite a while (like 7-9 months at the soonest), but... if anyone has any thoughts / knowledge on any of these, replies would be great. :D

PS – I’ve held sort of a Sony bias with my equipment because of the PS3. I recently picked up a receiver that was also Sony which was good, so I thought a Bravia would be good because they have special tuning between all the parts to work together. However, I would not at all be against something like the Samsung if it were truly a superior product, even more so if it is superior at a lower cost.

Have you checked out the Panasonic selections? I've heard very good things about them and when I go to the store they always appear to have the best picture.

Since I have a Panasonic now they were the first I looked at. They are just about purely Plasma, which I've read is no good for gaming because it can burn in a lot more easily than LCD.

Ack, just noticed another one... Samsung LNT4071F (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U9ZCQS/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1E39AFDTDMH4X&colid=2AUO31RTJHEVA) 40" with 1080p and the 120 MHz cert, at $1500. This takes over my number 1 pondering spot for what to get. :D (Crazy that the XBR4 is like $600 more for the same features. I like the way the XBRs look though. :p )

Edit: Read like 100+ reviews on the 40" and 46" version. It seems that the 120 MHz speeds make things more 'life like' for some people, but others really don't like the effect. The Samsungs have 4 settings for it (I think off, low, medium and high) and it seems most set it to 'low'. There is also a 'game mode' which I think bumps it to high, which a few mention solves the 'triple ball effect' which can occur during sports. Won't matter to me since I never watch sports, but there ya have it.

(Ya never know though, if I move somewhere with nice peeps and cute girlies that want to watch sports on my stuffs I wouldn't necessarily protest. ;) )

Edit edit: There were a few peeps who also looked at / owned the new LED backlit ones and said they really didn't see any difference save for during the most extremely dark scenes. It seems for the current price difference it just isn't worth it.

You are amazing...

About to be evicted by your roomies and you are trying to pick a new flat screen because the one you currently have is too burdensome?

LOL... unreal

At least smash the screen in before leaving. You don't want to leave a couple of jerks a nice big TV. :p

So... you'd recommend a single person move an ~250 lb screen that's rougly 3' x 2' x 2' how?

This doesn't even count the fact I don't have a vehicle it would fit into.

You could easily move it with one of those handcarts and a piece of rope (probably don't even need the rope but it could secure it to the handcart). Those little carts work wonders with moving big blocky stuff. I've moved a refrigerator with one. I'm sure your TV is not bigger than a refrigerator.

LOL yeah and in order to complete the homeless costume he needs to get trash bags and duct tape to carry and protect that and all his other belongings.

I can see rabb1t now hooking up his isp con from telephone poles on a laptop, pushing a basket in the streets of San Francisco. Eating cat food and begging on street corners.

Hint... you can get free electric power from the light poles in suburban stop and go malls... you know... where they hang the holiday trees and canes from light poles? Just try to be discreet and no one will be the wiser :)

Seriously man... get a job!

8 years ago my life was in a very different place.

Also, at the time, it was the choice between a tube-style HDTV that weighed ~250 lbs at ~$4500 (got mine on ebay for ~$3500) or getting a Plasma which weighed ~60 lbs, but also could not be found for less than ~$15000 (if you were very lucky you could find one on ebay for ~$9000). Or I suppose I could have also gotten a completely imoble projection style HDTV which would have only fit in small moving vans.

All of that is beside the point though.

Why are you 2 being poopie and not helpful?

Homeless peeps can also go to colleges and often get to showers / power outlets without much, if any, difficulty.
