Well, Im here to report that my first computer build has so far been incredibly successful. Thanks a ton Fozzik for your help and advice.

I do have one question though: Everything seems to work perfectly except the onboard sound card. The driver says that its installed and I can listen to sounds when it comes directly from a cd or dvd, but when I try to play music from my harddrive, it says no sound card is installed. Does this mean I have to buy a sound card before I can listen to music, or is there something I can download/change in the BIOS to fix the problem.

Im using an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mb.

What software are you using to play music? Windows media player, winamp, etc?

That's weird, and the first thing I would guess would be either the driver, or the music player software and its interaction with the driver.

One quick thing to check, under control panel - sounds and audio devices, there should be some sliders for volume and settings for various types of music (sometimes on different tabs in the settings window). I know you've probably done this, but sometimes one particular slider gets muted and just needs to be cranked back up.

start -> control panel -> sounds applet then make sure that all sound tabs point to the correct sound card.

This is assuming that you can hear normal windows noises otherwise download and install the latest nVidia nForce drivers (I think that is what the A8N-SLI is based on).

The other thing to look at is in BIOS to ensure that onboard sound is enabled.

Some sound cards load different drivers for different operations. If you right click on My Computer and select Manage, and then click on the Device Manager, does anything have an exclamation mark on it or is anything listed under Other Devices? If so you may need to load newer sound drivers.

Sorry no cookies, the last batch I made didnt turn out all that great, something about radioactivity, mutations or something along those lines.
