Key points: 5 man is basic group for instances with 10 and 20man (and woman) raids. Honestly I don't like the idea of 'middle' sied raids I'd rather have small group instances (5 or 6) and raids (20 or 24). Though to be sure UBRS worked okay in WoW as a PUG.

Winning key point:
When entering a dungeon you get all the associated quests. Hooray!

YAP. Yet another preview

Notes that Rift features outdoor instances and mini-instances called heroic challenges.

And more comments on emergent behavior in NPCs and Mobs (red on red combat).

First of all: I like the look of Rift.

But I agree with you middle-raids are not a good idea. UBRS worked well only because it was a simple spank and tank through out the whole instance, almost nothing could go wrong. Except on the last boss but even then it's all very "meh"

I'm back playing WoW and have been doing a few TOC 25 and Ony 25 runs and it's made me realize just how much I absolutely hate raiding. WAR was really onto something with the "PvP" claim. We should fight it out against ourselves for the loot.

Failing that, and for the PvE folk how-a-bout a global non ending event where each day you have to do a series of tasks (sorta like daily quests in WoW, or better put the weekly raid. Only it's a quest chain that's rather long). Raiding needs to die as in the end you're just sitting there playing an MMORPG wasting your f**king life for a few pixels of loot at best. I'm all for working hard but I'm not all for sitting about doing feck all. What's criminal is that WoW is on the faster paced side of things.

Still raids or not I'll still do 'em and waste my life away. Not sure how long WoW will hold my interest so I may as well do that playing RIFT.

I've been following RPOT nee HOT for several months now, hoping it turns out to be the kind of game I like to play. I am pretty impressed with the graphics and a lot of the ideas I have seen tossed around.

Two things that worry me:
* I THINK I see the beginning of a "lets appease the easy crowd" type of attitude from the designers. I hope they do not go too far.
* Lots of shake up in management and game design personnel over the course of development, and at least one big-hitter lost through this process.
* A corollary to the above: Apparently, significant changes to the way the game is supposed to play, rather late in the development cycle.

Three things could kill this for me:
* If it were too wow-like
* If there were no experience-based death penalty
* If PVP were so interwoven into the game world that I can not easily ignore it

We shall see - but they sure are taking their sweet time. I suppose that is a good thing though. I am cautiously hopeful at this point, and very glad to see Silky has started a separate Forum for this game.

Silky doesn't have a good track record for MMO's they decide to make forums for. Maybe it's a bad thing. :)

Can't blame Silky for the fact that all the MMOs coming out end up sucking. Even the ones we don't make forums for end up bad.

Eventually someone is going to have to make a good one.

I'm with ya on the PVP or quests over raids. Some of my favourite smaller MMORPG's did it this way and it was far better than all the raids I did in EQ and WoW.

And many of them done even make it to release lol.
