View Full Version : A "No MT" server option?

Just as somewhat of a thought exercise (and to lead people to a perspective I don't think they've considered), I started a thread on the GW2Guru boards about the idea of a single server where players would be able to pay a sub fee to completely avoid the MT shop all together.

Check it out...I'm probably going to get flamed into oblivion...but it's quite fun.

Amazing how dumb people love to respond without reading. hehe.

Wow, some reaction. I laughed at the people who said that it cannot be done because "it undermines the business model".

With GW2's WvW concept, your idea would only work for people who only did PvE. People like Perfect will still run up against the issue in people they fight against in PvP. And it sounds like the issue is not a problem in Perfect's PvE since he is not directly fighting against others, so your idea appeals only to a fraction of the anti-MT crowd.

Supposedly, nothing in the shop will technically provide a power or statistical advantage in PvP... so even if Perfect was playing against MT-enabled players, it would have no effect on the outcome of the fights.

Most of the really "iffy" things that ArenaNet might offer in their shop have a direct impact on PvE...short-cutting or providing non-permanent advantages...devaluing PvE achievements, etc.

So I agree that the majority of the effects would be in terms of PvE...I don't think it would negatively impact PvP for either side (the MT-enabled or the MT-disabled).

I knew I would get flamed over there. In the GW2 community, there are certain things which are hated in a religious, devout way. A sub fee is one of those things... the holy trinity is another. Sometimes I like stirring the pot just to force people to think about things a little differently (although it seems most people who've posted aren't thinking AT ALL).

Oh god, that's the first time I ever read that forum and now I wish I didn't. I can't believe how dumb most of those people are :( I literally prayed that I wouldn't see a typical, "If you dont like the shop dont use it!!1!1!!" reply and that is exactly what someone said on the first page.

I was going to register there just to agree with the idea but now I don't even care. When the majority of the population of a game is that stupid, it's not even a battle I could be bothered to fight.

If that scares you, check out this thread...

The topic is scary enough (it's possible ArenaNet may allow cash shop currency to be trade-able in game, which means they will be selling in-game gold for real money) but the responses will blow your mind.

It's quite possible that this is why ArenaNet has decided to put up official forums. They want to cut down on the moron quotient a bit. Of course, it's also possible they are just trying to ensure things are spun in the most positive light, by removing posts like mine. O.o

Urgh

The internet is such a wierd and unnatural place. I just need to remind myself that a lot of these people who make posts are not necessarily grown ups. The stupidity on there is worrying, but the thing I hate the most is apathy. Scares the crap out of me that, and nothing rubs me the wrong way more than comments like, "If u dont liek it dont play it whinerz!" and "i dont c teh problem!". I can just imagine all those kids (I have to assume they are kids or I'll drive off a cliff) who say stuff like that are sometime after release, going to be PWNMNEEEDZZ by some guy who spent $300 just buying the best possible gear you can get, and they will get enraged and call the game gay and then beg their parents for $300 so that they can compete, and when they get told not a chance, they will quit and proclaim to the world that this is the stupidest game ever, full of lamers.

But they will never admit that they were wrong when it mattered...

As you can see I have a very low opinion of some people :P I'm going to play Forged Alliance and blow up some robots! I will tune in tomorrow for more updates and hopefully that blog post from that dev guy who said they will clarify their microtransaction philosophy. That will be... interesting.

I think I finally did it!

I pushed ArenaNet over the edge with that alternate server thread. HAHAHA

They are announcing all the details of the cash shop tomorrow. Now all we have to do is pray they aren't ambiguous about things.

I will give you credit for this.

However, when they say "Stuff will be available for between $.50 and $5.00" I'm going to laugh.

edit: Also, did you hear about the guy who tried to say something on the internet without a link?

edit2: Went and found it for myself. http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/gems-in-game-economy-and-t31943.html?p=1233717#post1233717

Ooh. Sorry. It was a dev post on the GW2Guru...I'll get it in just a sec.

He said they are going to provide a detailed explanation of their philosophy on the cash shop...which could be good or bad. It likely means we won't get a list of the available items (which to me would be the only way to completely end the controversy), but it also likely means that whatever they tell us will apply over the long-term, rather than just at launch.

EDIT: LINK (http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1233717&postcount=668)

They went on to claim that they had been planning to talk about the cash shop tomorrow for quite some time. *shrug* who knows. I'll take credit anyway for stirring up a bunch of crap in multiple threads. :D

"talk at length" is not the same as "a detailed explanation of their philosophy", just to temper your expectations.

I'll give you credit too.

I just hope there was a decent number of people on that forum who realised how pay2win was infact a concern. Otherwise we could be in for some bad news. But got my fingers crossed anyway.

LOL. I guess that's true. I was assuming that if they typed a bunch of words, there would inevitably be detail...but that was incorrect. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

It's quite possible they will talk at length and say absolutely nothing. :D

I have to be honest...if they create an entire blog post full of completely subjectively defined words and ambiguity, I might bash my monitor in with my forehead. At this point, I think we've made it ABUNDANTLY clear that the words they've been using don't mean what they think they mean.

Inconceivable!
