My firewall shouldn't be blocking it, what could I be doing on default settings that it won't work?

My firewall shouldn't be blocking it, what could I be doing on default settings that it won't work?
I tried this on my home computer and am able to connect without issue. However, when I try it at work where I know that there is a blocking firewall, I get the same error message you do.

I suppose one thing is to keep in mind that the java applet connects directly from your computer via IRC protocol and ports--it doesn't use http ports. So I guess I would double check whether your firewall is blocking IRC in general. Have you tried a stand-alone IRC client?
