**CAUTION: Rant Ahead**

I registered here when SV first arrived on the scene. I stuck with the original VG boards for support and knowing that the fan sites were still organizing.

But you know what? Today I've had it up to here!

I posted in a very innocent off-topic section, JUST to keep out of the current controversies going on out 'on the main floor'.

Would you believe not one, but THREE jerks HAD to come in and needle me to death?

I've reported it. If nothing happens, I'm saying goodbye to Vanguard. I simply do NOT need this type of aggravation!

/rant off

:needle:

(j/k)

I know how you feel... it seems the closer to launch we get with Vanguard the happier we should be but unfortunately along with a highly anticipated game comes the unanticipated trolls...

well maybe not unanticipated but definitely unwanted

(don't worry rabb1t, you are a wanted troll)

it happens a lot especially when there is a highly publicized press release or event such as E3... it draws a ton of people in and things get incredibly crazy

the most we can do is wait for them to get bored... they will never go away completely but the become a little more bearable as time goes on...

don't judge the game by these folks... if you like the game and are excited for it then stick around... there are a multitude of communities for vanguard fans to hang out in... including SV :pirate:

take a break, do someting fun, and them come on back... by then the trolls should have started to dwindle down to a dull roar...

Stick with the fansites. They're MUCH nicer. I switched to the fansites when the whole SOE thing happened. I went back briefly and saw that the place had become more like the WoW forums, and now I'm back here on the fansites and I plan to stay. The WoW forums were largely responsible (not 100% but maybe about 50%) for my leaving that game. I can't play a game with people I hate.

All of us Venomites should jump onto the same server at launch - all the whiney types wont join because they will want a low pop server to reduce lag... or we just wont let them know where we are. ;) That way we will have a fantastic set of people to play with! :D

Thanks for the support, guys and gals. It's good to know there's some still around who are normal and don't find fifty ways to Sunday to take jabs at people.

I sent a note to Glip a couple weeks ago that if I didn't know any better, I'd swear this was the competition themselves doing it on purpose. I know it's not. I should stop trying to rationalize the irrational.

Anyway, sorry for trolling your volcano boards on the first post. :o

I didn't know everyone defected here but it does sound like a great idea! If you don't mind, I'll poke around.

Thanks again!

Might I suggest quitting said board, not said game? I never follow boards when a game has launched myself.

I still frequent the OVF, but there is seldom any new info there. If I want recent updates, reviews, or any Vanguard info, I come to this site. (You're doing a great job with this site btw!)

The flamers at the OVF don't seem to be as prolific as they were even a few weeks ago, and I see more "Glipped" posts and locked threads, and I also notice some of the same trolls have resigned on with slightly different names, I assume they were banned, but thier posts aren't nearly as offensive. I think the moderators may have been too busy during E3, but the moderation has been noticeably increased, IMO. Besdies, Brad and other dev's keep posting there, so I'll keep reading the OVF.

Also note that Cindy is back, and she has always a bit more hardnosed on folks that Glip is, as of her own words at Fanguard. I rarely go to the OVF any longer either, I rely on the dev tracker here, my guild forums, and Vanguardcrafters for all my info. Fansites definitely FTW!

Been a fan of these forums for some time, but no real desire to post till now.
I don't mind a debate with individuals with varying views, but these trolls are about to drive me insane. You can formulate a post that explains why you hold opinion x. Using examples, logic and manners. But instead of getting a response identifying fallacies, or citing opposing examples; you get personal attacks, or a quick change of the subject.

You think the developers at sigil would take a break and develop us a virtual (rhymes with witch)-slap?

But instead of getting a response identifying fallacies, or citing opposing examples; you get personal attacks, or a quick change of the subject.

A newcomer to Vanguard created a thread on the OVF in the off topic section called "How does this game compare to WoW?" They were honestly looking for a comparison between the two games to help them evaluate whether Vanguard is for them. Nothing wrong with that, surely?

I came past it when there had been about 10 replies or so - I stopped by to see if I could help out in any way. None of those replies had answers the questions the OP had asked... the first couple had bad mouthed WoW, and then those posts were followed by other posters having a go at WoW bashers... but equally not helping the OP out in any way.

*big sigh*

I wrote a decent length post for the OP about Vanguard's features with a few comparisons to WoW, and directed the OP towards Silky Venom if they had any more questions. When I checked back the following day the arguements about WoW had pretty much sidestepped around my post and carried on...

I just wish that newcomers to Vanguard visited fansites first - all of the affiliates are hard working and would all be more than happy to answer questions. Stumbling across Vanguard and being met with 3 line arguements when you try to ask a question isn't going to keep Vanguard in very good stead. :(

/sigh

Moral of the story: If you are introducing someone to Vanguard, don't tell them about the OVF - just send them straight over to Silky venom. :D

Skarlath makes a good point about how knocking a person just from the previous game they played, is a very negative way of welcoming them into your "house".

What's ironic is how every one of those people knocking someone for the game they played, those very same people not only played it themselves, but have multiple level 60's from it. There's a bitterness involved for sure.

One person, in their signature ON THE OVF, has a complete site devoted to predominantly bashing World of Warcraft.

I've looked at various MMORPG sites lately and I was amazed at how many pointed to the tone of the OVF lately. They were turned off. One was LoTRO, a game just going into beta, too. Even on their boards, they spoke about how turned off they were when visiting OVF. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.

It doesn't help when a person looks at the review sites, the only link they'll get for Vanguard is right to the main, official site. Which of course, people will just click on forums. It's natural. I don't think there's much you can do there, however...

If I could suggest maybe asking Sigil to include a cover page, so that when a person does click on OVF from the main site, they get a page with choices to pick from. That would not only make people aware of the fansites but give them the opportunity to explore them, register and participate in alternate forums.

I don't think you guys are getting enough exposure.

Or, like a Chinese water clock, just cause the destruction and hate to be spread to multiple boards instead of remaining primarily on the OFV. :p

Personally, I just think they need to do what the Asheron's Call 2 beta board did - require moderator's approval before any post appears. That would rapidly get rid of all the trash talking and junk which is on the board.

Seriously, they are going to rapidly accumulate a bad rep for the forum behavior if they don't start to do something about it. In the past they were pretty good about getting rid of pointless x vs. y threads and the like, but in the past few months the mods have really let things go.

I would be all for this. In fact, when I played WoW, I actually begged them to introduce this kind of moderation, and I even volunteered several times to be a moderator, but of course not only did I never hear back, I eventually saw them post something to the effect of "Please don't ask us to let you be moderators. We don't take volunteers. Don't ask why, and stop bugging us." Lol, so I wasn't the only one begging to help...

I think it boils down to manpower. Sigil has, what, two moderators? Blizzard had only about 2 as well, last I heard, for all of their boards. (and even worse, all the moderators are in the same time zone) Fansites tend to have more moderators. The site I hung out on all the time for EQ had something like 4 or 5, and a much smaller community.

Great idea. :)

Hey, aren't the OVF getting the boot when the game goes live? I think I remember that being the general idea... is that no longer the case?

I think I finally figured out what bugs me about the OVF. Even with the flames dieing down a bit (and they have), it's just not quite right. I think it's that so many people get themselves a laundry list of what "TEH ULTIMATE GAME" is and think anything that doesn't strictly adhere to it is automatically crap.

There are a few things about VG I'd do different if I were designing the game (more skill based than level based for example), but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy it. Heck, I might even *gasp* be wrong! /faint

i hear you , i understand your frustration. it seems that when people get in text, their manners sometimes go right out the door.i arrived just before the news about soe, and have been shocked at t he rudeness i have seen in the forums. i have almost stopped reading them because of it. but i can't cause i might miss something :)
its sad when people have to put " dont flame me, but .. " as their first sentence.
I dont think however that we are going to see that so much in the game. maybe im just optimistic. hang in there, there are some great people out there.

Amen to the OVF being utterly worthless and generally painful to use.

I think part of the problem stems from people that are under the impression that their post count impacts their chances at getting in beta. So they're like 'I MUST POST SOMETHING IN EVERY THREAD, BUT THINKING TOO HARD >_<' Also its a proven fact that nothing inflates a post count faster then a flame war.
