In this article (http://news.com.com/2008-1001_3-6118265.html?part=rss&tag=6118265&subj=news) the CTO of AMD has a little Q&A where he mentions that they are looking at putting the CPU and GPU together - not in the same way as "integrated graphics" on a laptop, although he does talk about that too, but actual integration of CPU and GPU as early as 2008. It's an interesting read.

Yeah, they mentioned this before. I'm betting it will be several years for development to reach the point where they will be powerful enough to consider as a replacement for standard add-in GPUs. (With less powerful integrated type ones we see today being the early model types.)

Yes, it will be a curious development to see what happens when 'integrated' graphics controllers become mated with the CPU on the same silicon - with no bus to cross and support for programmable shaders, it would make for a really interesting low/mid range computer.
