I'm thinking it's time to upgrade graphics,
Am looking at an ATI x1950 which are hitting £130ish now. I think I can ebay my x850PE for £40-50 which chews into the price some, any thoughts - is it a good upgrade?
(Please dont suggest 8800 etc, they cost £300-400 which is *way* more than i would pay)

If ya waited till around Feb the mid-range and entry level Nvidia DX10s, and all of the ATi DX10 line should be out.
Not sure if ya need something 'now' or if you can 'wait and see' for a couple of months.
:p :D

X1950... what? What's the suffix? In this case, it makes some difference. I don't really understand the exchange rate though (being a dumb American) so I'm not really sure which price range you're looking at.

Not a bad card...but I would certainly wait if I were you. You probably knew that already, though. ;)

yupyup, my x850 plays everything I want it to play at the moment, never buy into the current generation - prefer to upgrade graphics cards annually given how fast they turn around and the price premiums the latest and greatest command. Will wait for the next gen of ATI's to come out and the price slashing that happens on the 7xxx/1xxx series. Think that i'm still using a CRT helps with it all, run games at 1024x768 still
Might pass the 850 onto my dad, he's a gamer and has a 9600 in his shuttle at the moment, though he's asked me to build him a gaming rig....

Thou must work more on thy Google-fu, Fozziksan: XE.com (http://www.xe.com/ucc/).
Right now, it looks like the exchange rate is just about 2 USD to 1 GBP.
Do manufacturers mark up prices overseas, though? That might throw a monkey wrench into the equation...

17.5% VAT (sales tax) + import duty + cost of doing business in europe + ripoff britain effect. Electronics are usually 50-100% more expensive here. The dollar is horrendously weak at the moment, havent seen it that low for a long time so it's worthwhile buying in the US and importing.
