Disclaimer: this review may contain spoilers. So if you don’t want the movie ruined please read ahead with caution.

Let me begin by saying that all people at some times in their lives must take back something they have said. Now it’s my turn. I take back anything bad I said about this movie. It is not just another ID4 clone. It is not just a remake.

But one thing I would do — I would change the title to Ass Whoopin’ of the Worlds.

This is one serious edge of your seat kind of movie. From beginning to end your adrenaline will be pumping and you will be chewing your nails. You will be completely caught up in it from the first signs of something being wrong to worrying if Ray (played by Tom Cruise) is going to get out alive with his kids.

This movie definitely has what it takes to be a huge summer blockbuster: A well known story (thank you HG Wells), a highly qualified cast (Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning to name a few), incredible directing (thank you Steven Spielberg) and great special effects (thank you ILM).

The movie starts off by introducing you to Ray as his children are being dropped off for the weekend. He kind of ticks you off from the get go… not a great father, not really a great person. Then all hell breaks loose and he tries what he can to get himself and his kids out of harms way. Albeit recently Cruise has shown some strange behavior in public, on film he does an incredible job of pulling us into his character and the world he is living in. You don’t really care for him at times and then the next minute you will be screaming at him to look out and cheering him on.

Dakota Fanning adds the “cute” factor to the movie as well as helping Ray’s character to develop into someone you would care about. I mean who couldn’t feel for a guy who is trying to protect his annoying rebellious teenage son and cute widdel adowable dawter. Awwwww *gush*

In any case the cast does a great job of dragging you into the conflict they have found themselves in. And if you aren’t cheering on Ray and his brood by the first half of the movie you are a cold and heartless person.

I won’t spoil the ending for anyone but throughout the movie you will be wondering how they are going to defeat the aliens for everything to come out in a nice happy ending. You will be thinking “omg omg omg” the entire time. Never fear, the ending fits into the movie rather well, and although I felt a wee bit disappointed, it really did pull everything together nicely and will satisfy most if not all of you out there.

This movie bumps up that hope factor that Batman Begins brought to the summer season. I guess we will have to wait until next weekend for Fantastic Four to see if that surge can carry on.

War of the Worlds gets 3½ out of 4 Gnomes.

Nice review, Dill - and very timely, as I have been asked out to the movies this weekend and the suggested one was War of the Worlds. I'm not sure I'm up to an OMG OMG OMG OMG kind of movie right now, but I would like to see it at a later date. Very helpful.

By the way, you said 3½ gnomes. That was out of how many?

4 is the recommended limit of allowing gnomes to gather before it becomes too dangerous so I scale it out of 4
