Word around the web is that on the 11th of August, Nvidia will release a lower-priced version of their new-generation graphics processor.
What I'm reading is that the 7800GT will have 20 pipelines, run at 400MHz with 1GHz memory, and will be priced to move at $399. $400 is much more reasonable than the $600 price tag for the GTX, and all signs point to the 7800GT outperforming the 6800 Ultra.
ATI has got to be scrambling at this point. It looks like they will have to have cards in stores on launch day, because Nvidia was able to do it. It's looking a lot like it may be as late as the end of September before we see ATI's new-gen chip in stores. Nvidia is only pouring salt on the wound by making a second hard launch of a more mainstream part...a lot of people will have made their purchase before ATI has any answer.
In semi-related news, ATI was promising some fancy new anti-aliasing modes with their dual-GPU technology (Crossfire). At the moment, Crossfire has not made an appearance...and Nvidia is releasing a new driver that brings SLI anti-aliasing modes to the table. More stolen thunder, basically...ATI really needs to get back on top of things, and soon.
