Crafting confusion

Ok so I’m a newbie here, I played eq from Beta right up until Depths of Dark Hollow, I’ve come to vanguard with visions of classic eq etc. A game where getting to through it ( at high levels ) is not a time sink where I spend 8 hours doing a single raid etc. Anyways I’m used to the old eq way of crafting,. So I tried to start crafting last night, I’m a wood elf ranger, and managed to find Cabreal (sp) (city in the tree’s reminds me of Kelethin) and got the starter quest (ie find this guy) I got to the point where I made my first item , some piece of wood I need to deliever (I can’t find the person I’m suppose to take it too) I was woundering if there is a idiots guide to crafting etc? As well when I was on the ground around the city I got to learning about harvesting, I was told to harvest some Basalt etc. After I got my tunic boots etc I was told to get a primary and Secondary, but I’m confused as to where I get/learn these. I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

I don't think this will answer all of those questions, but I think I can hit a few.

got the starter quest (ie find this guy) I got to the point where I made my first item , some piece of wood I need to deliever (I can’t find the person I’m suppose to take it too)I don't know the specific quests for the newbie woodelves, but typically the crafting tutorial quests only have you running around the general crafting area. Does the quest text mention the NPC's role? If it's a vendor-like name, or a trainer, they're probably right in the middle of the crafting area. If it's a "crafting advisor", they might be a little further away.

I was woundering if there is a idiots guide to crafting etc?I'm not sure if it qualifies, but www.vanguardcrafters.com (http://www.vanguardcrafters.com/) has at least some info. Poking around the SilkyVenom wiki a bit, and maybe TenTonHammer articles, might be worthwhile, too.

I got to learning about harvesting, I was told to harvest some Basalt etc. After I got my tunic boots etc I was told to get a primary and Secondary, but I’m confused as to where I get/learn these.Typically, the npc that is giving you the harvesting tutorial quests is also a harvesting trainer. After you do those two quests (to get a "chunk", and then three of the condensed version ("ore", "bale", "slab", etc)), the NPC should have two new dialog options: setting the primary profession, and secondary profession. Simply go through those dialogs and you should be all set - but select primary profession first, then secondary (if you do secondary first, it can lead to odd states).
