Brad: In-game advertising?
It's come to my attention that Sony have sent a trade press release that they will be using in-game advertising in all of it's products in the future. Does this include VG? and if so what will it entail?
If this is true for Vanguard I will be surprised and horrified! It certainly wouldn't fit with the role playing aspects of the genre.

going on Sony's "if it makes money, shaft the players" approach, I wouldn't be that surprised to see the RMT folks as the first customers for Sony's "official" in-game advertising.
Thank goodness Sigil own vanguard not Sony.

People in power take note. If in game advertising happens in VG. I close my account and find a new game. And never buy a Sigil or SOE product again. Ever.
I'm probably not alone in this. But I will refrain from saying it will kill the games. But, just remember SWG and the NGE; and how well SOE people calculated player reaction there...

This is nothing new.
The standard SOE EULA for their online games contains a section regarding ingame advertising. SOE has games (MxO and Planetside) that have actively used ingame advertising for many years. The EULAs for MxO and Planetside are virtually word-for-word identical as the EULAs for EQ, EQ2, Vanguard, SWG. Do any of those games have ingame advertising?
Could you please link this 'press release' they issued regarding this topic?
Or are you just trying to to stir up shit by pointing out something that has been in the SOE online game EULA for a long time... hoping that other people are as ignorant as you and not bothered to actually read the EULA.

Anyone have experience with in-game advertising? It wouldn't fit at all in Vanguard but EA did it with Battlefield 2142. Everyone was outraged at first of course but then when the ads showed up people started making threads "Check this out! I saw my first ad today! Screenshots." I dont recall anyone having problems with them after they saw them.

Product placement is the only way to go. I hope we get replica PS3s in game or something.

I'm hardly being over dramatic by asking a question, however this was a paper press release to one of my relatives company. I have asked if they could scan it and send it to me, so I will post it up here if I can.

Most likely, in games that aren't set in contemporary or future settings, advertisements will be done using a UI window. In games like Planetside, Matrix online, Battlefield 2142, etc. in-game advertising wouldn't be a problem at all. EA Sports games should have dynamic in-game ads.
In fantasy games, especially those with monthly fees, having in-game ads will only serve to lose subscriptions, lowering the value of such ad space, losing revenue in the long term...mostly likely even instantly.

Don't bother.
It's old news.
Ingame advertising has been in anarchy Online and Matrix Online for quite a while now. SOE is not stupid. They aren't going to put invasive advertising in a fantasy based MMOG.

- Your bank NPC will politely ask you if you need refinancing your mortgage.
- Your general goods NPC will suggest enjoying a certain brand of cola.
- Your quest NPC will suggest a new brand of sanitary products.
- Your hairy mobs will spam messages about using a specific shampoo.
- Your female mobs will swear to cosmetic products from only the leading brands.
- Your crafting instructor will suggest offers from misc DIY companies.
- Your trainer now also offer a pilates program.
- Your mount vendor will envision a future with motorized vehicles.
(Naturally, I invented all this )

Perhaps, but I haven't seen anything from Sigil regarding this, and I'm curious if they will be pressured into doing it.

It would be more understandable to have advertising in a present-day or future setting RPG... where advertising would just all be part of the scenery and could easily be integrated into the world. But I don't see how it could be possible in a fantasy setting without ruining the immersion.
Alot of us play fantasy RPGs to ESCAPE the present.
I guess it all depends on how they implement it.... if its something like the /pizza command in EQ2, it wouldnt bother me... thats voluntary.... but if I am getting pop-up ads in the middle of my game, or have some banner across the bottom... it begs to question why are we paying for a game that is making money off of advertising? In that case it should be free.

The ourtage over /pizza in EQ2 was pretty funny actually.
All it did was open up a web browser to the Pizza Hut site. There was nothing ingame to even advertise that the command existed. Unless you read the blurb on the EQ2 launcher, you wouldn't have ever known that it existed.

I'm not aware of any such plan.
