Default Cable Modem - opions wanted

Currently using a rented ($3.00 / mo.) Toshiba PCX2500.
http://www.toshiba.com/taisnpd/products/pcx2500.html

Thinking about getting my own. Why? Well, I'm just curious to see if there's any difference in modems from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Owning other Linksys products, I'm looking at the Linksys BEFCMU10.

Anyone have any thoughts on the pros/cons of owning your own vs. renting BESIDES the monthly rental fee?

Any thoughts would be appreciate.

Thanks!

There aren't any pros/cons aside from not paying a monthly fee, really. Just don't get a crap cable modem. I've used the Linksys one you've referenced, and it was very reliable.

And where the hell are you that the rental fee is only $3.00 a month? It's frickin $12.00 a month here.

I've got the Linksys one as well... works great. I even hooked it up to a switch so I can cycle power when it needs to be reset rather than having to unplug/replug the power cable all the time.

Most cable modems are built to a standard. This standard is called DOCSIS. It is basically the standard for cable modem communications, and thus, their are very few differetiations between them.

Their are also a few "Propritary" cable modems out there. But most cable companies have phased them out, and are strictly running a DOCSIS based system. (As they are MUCH cheaper to expand and maintain. And easier to manage than most propritary systems.)

So ya, almost every off the shelf cable modem these days is a DOCSIS modem. A few small quality differances, but almost none on the performance side. It fails, you get another one. Fairly simple. I personally have used Com21 cable modems (About 400 or so), and Motorola cable modems (Another 500 or so). Failure rate on them both is about the same (Even with used hardware). Usually if they work at first they continue to work. After the first month, if they don't fail, chances are you are good for many, many years.

So ya, get one. Hell buy one used. I am sure Craigslist can hook ya up.

Why would you have to reset it? IMHO that doesn't make it good, or even ok. Unless you reset it because you are changeing your router out often, etc.

Thanks for the input. That shed some light on the situation.

Because when Comcast has a hiccup or outage or whatever, the modem doesn't always properly handshake and get back up and running without cycling power. That isn't only Linksys... that's what I've seen with every cable modem I've ever used or installed. Some of them used to come with reset buttons on the modem, but now it seems they all just leave you to unplug/replug in order to reset your connection with the server.

Wasn't mentioning it as something good about the modem. I was just off-handedly mentioning that I did that and it was useful and easier.
