Default File Transfer

Been wondering, is there a way via the internet to transfer files, large ones directly - ie not via MSN server, just me to my friend. i know we could kinda do it via RDC, but its not ideal. perhaps some command prompt, type in their IP, the file location etc and hit go.

i've nothing specific, just file that are too big to sensibly wait for yahoo to attach them and upload them. lets say 50M as a guess for sake of argument

well, the simplist form would be to zip it. would that be sufficient? or would you need something different?

im thinking something either basic coding - ie open command promt and type something (off the top of my head) like

"send_file 80.192.380.0.32 c:\largefile.doc"

or something similar to remote desktop connection that windows has by default. i have bumped into a way through IRC programs that might work.

I would say go find a free FTP server if this is something that will be continuous. I usually use irc/Mirc for stuff under 20mb or burn it to a DVD/External storage and hand it in person.

You could try something like Real VNC or what ever the free open source version is that will give you access to the other computer remotely so you can actually trouble shoot the other comp but it will allow you to pull files from the HDD as if it was your own or place files on them from yours.

straight P2P use WinMx and just agree on your screen names for ease of finding each other. This is open P2P, so if someone else found the file they could siphon it themselves if you allow them to connect at all, so if its sensitive I would encrypt it, but other than that..WinMx is still free and easy to use for large files. For that matter you could use the Firefox extension for GMail, and set it up as a file on your email and allow them access to take it out.

had the OP said that the files would be streaming, and that it wasnt a "program" that needed to be sent, i would have come up with something different.

but, thats why i was asking questions.

oh well..
