These are the server based cores though, not the home system ones.

We won't see the home cores until very late in the year or early next year.

You do realize VG only runs on servers? So this is good news

Rabb1t, whats the difference between the performance in the server cores and the desktop ones. Is there a whole different design for the desktop ones? I see people using the opteron cores now in desktops as opposed to using a Athlon or AthlonX2 chip. Is there a major performance advantage or difference between a server chip and a desktop one?

I'm fairly certain the new cores will be based on the new 1207 socket. That's why I mentioned it, not due to performance reasons, but for compatibility reasons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_F
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_K10
http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=3006

Could be wrong, I can't find any recent Barcelona news which states what sockets they are looking at when. If you look at the AnandTech shot of the core though, that is most certainly not an AM2 design (and counting the dots it's 35 across, which is 35x35 = 1225, so 1207 would make sense subtracting out the missing ones).

If I'm not mistaken the "Phenom" line is the AM2 version of Barcelona, while the "Barcelona" is the socket 1207 version. (It could be that the "Phenom" is the redesign of Barcelona and we will see them for AM2 later. All these names and changes are starting to make my head spin. )

Just have to make the distinction between server and desktop... the server version of the CPU is coming first, and will likely be fitting in the server socket.

The desktop ones are coming later and will start in AM2 and then move to AM3 versions. I'm guessing that both will be based on the Barcelona architecture, and there will be very little difference between the server and desktop parts (if any difference at all) besides the socket they plug into.

I also believe that there are going to be quad-core...coming first...and dual-core versions of the new architecture available for the desktop (if I'm remembering correctly).
