Money
I keep hearing that crafting is the best way to make money in Vanguard...but how is Diplomacy? Do people earn any money doing Civic diplomacy (or quests?)? If so, is it more than people tend to make while Adventuring at equivalent levels?

I dunno if you make any money on higher skill levels but in the beginning you dont make any. On the contrary you need alot of money to get items you need to do quests.

Most of the money I've made is from selling clothing to other diplomats. The tier 3 clothing can sell for some decent money. Civic diplomacy does give 'vendor Trash' items as well, but its not really a decent income. I'm sure when they add more content (writs, etc..) Diplomacy will come into its own money wise.

Look at it this way - one of the parley types rewards you with vendor loot instead of information. Parleys generally take longer to complete than killing a mob. A tier 3 parley which gets you a vendor loot reward - will sell for 8 copper. 8.

I'm of the belief that Entertain civics are useless.

The vendor trash from parleys is near useless, but the vendor items given as rewards from information turn ins can add up. Tier 4 and 5 turn ins will give a decent amount of silver.

You need a lot of money if you intend to buy gear off the exchange. Or you can do what the people selling the gear have done and do information turn ins. I've made several gold from selling dip gear and I've only ever bought 2 dip items (for a total of about 10 silver).
It's just a matter of how much effort you are willing to put in.

I've made 40ish gold from pretty much just selling T3 loot. I do buy, if the price is right (1sp per presence or less) T3 evidence level gear that I am missing, though I do try to trade for it first instead (finding people to trade with/buy from isn't the easiest thing in the world right, not to many people have doubles to trade away)
Mail me on Targonor if you want my have/want list

...and think like a merchant. I bought 48 presence points the other night for 4 silver. It's not terribly expensive if you are careful.

To answer the literal questions (which have mostly been hinted at so far, but not directly stated):

Bad.

Civic is adequately covered (a little, but not competitive with Adventure or Crafting if you are a good marketing). Quests? None I have seen.

Adventuring is higher.
Summation: Right now, despite the box saying you can gain riches in diplomacy, the only way to make any real money in Diplomacy is by selling gear to other players. This may be partially corrected by Writs, though developers have said that the real money making line in diplomacy is Merchant Diplomacy, also called Regional Trade. This is not yet in the game, nor is it on the hot list of things developers are currently focused on. Right now they are focused on T3+ clothing (T3 in place, T4 on the boards), Writs, and adding additional quest content.

A friend of mine who likes to keep his spheres equal has made truckloads of money through Dip.
Currently he is 26 adv/26 crafter/265 diplomat, and from speaking with him more than 75% of the gold he has he made by selling diplomacy gear. Granted, you'd have to be above the level curve to do that, but i wouldnt say its that bad.

I would argue that is the player, though, not the sphere. The leaders of any field can make money off their leftovers. I have made all of my money off diplomacy as well hitting a nice quiet time when the leaders we grinding and hoarding T3 and T4 information, but before T3 was actually in play.
However, for people just getting into it now, I do not believe that revenue flow will continue...unless they hit the market right when a bunch of people are hitting 50 with phat lewt and deciding to give diplomacy a try. But the market for T1 and T2 stuff is now pretty dead since T3 hit the market, and getting to T3 skill (minimum 176 skill) is not anything that someone just getting into it now is going to get fast enough to be competitive.

With the addition of Diplomacy writs, has the money situation gotten any better, or is money through diplomacy still really bad?

I domn't know yet. I think Regional Trade is supposed to be the main way for diplomats to earn money.

All writs reward you with is facets. Facets (currently) have no game use. The WILL be a hand in, in the future, to gems and super gems, which will in turn be put into masks. It is believed these masks will be for all spheres, so those might have a value and a money making potential. But that is all in the future.
But no, at this time, the money aspect of the Diplomacy sphere is still pretty grim.

My highest character is 25 and I've made most of my money from farming rares off named and harvesting. Then I spend it on diplomacy gear because they look cool. Finding good stuff of value is tricky though. I bought a +179 soilder presence shirt for 1.75g today. I thought it was a steal.
