Default Recommend me a mouse

Okay,

I'm currently using a Microsoft Wireless Laser 5000:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mo...s.aspx?pid=068

It's really comfortable for me, although I find the side buttons a bit hard to click. It's right handed, and as it takes AA batteries has a nice heft to it that I like.

Some other mice i've tried give me hand cramps, but I find this one to be really natural for me (I have small hands) and accurate enough.

There are two things I really don't like about it tho:

1) The mousewheel isn't notched - it has a smoothish flow, a lot of gaming assumes that steady click click when using it for precision weapon shifting.

2) It's not very serviceable, the wheel is starting to get gummed up - i'd like to get inside and give it a good clean but cant.

Anyone have some recommendations?

For corded mice, everyone seemed to like the Logitech G5 for $44. Logitech recently put out a Logitech G5 Revised for $60 which fixes some issues like reducing the stiffness of the wheel click. Customer reviews for both of these mentioned the Logitech MX518 for $40; most preferred the G5 while some preferred the MX518.

For cordless mice, the Logitech G7 for $67 seems to be the best, though the customer reviews are rife with complaints about the short battery life.

I cant deal with mouse wires anymore. And dont mind changing a pair of Duracell AA's every couple of months, always have a spare box of them to hand.

Well, the MX Revolution http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104015 is really expensive and probably not worth it to most people. Personally wouldnt have bought it but I'm a hermit and this build was a long time waiting so there was a little splurging Anyhow, I absolutly love the thing. Its got this great free spin which rules when your looking at big document's. Response is solid(Wish Microsoft's first Ergonomic wireless keyboard's offering were as tight ><).

Also interesting, it feels comfortable in my big monkey paw's as well as my wife's comically small hands(children's small gloves are the only one's that fit). Other things like the extra thumb button have become suprisingly useful. Its set to magnify the screen which save's her from having to move the monitor to read it. A button behind the wheel which I've set to refresh the screen.(Great for camping product shiped to airports etc..)

Anyhow, I was really nervous to spend almost 100 bean's on a clicker but after 5 month's its still feeling like a good purchase. IE: Gained alot of utility from its features and would feel good about recomending it.

Nice chart. The best mouse, and its younger brother, from the results on the final page, the Logitech MX500 and MX300, don't even show up on the logitech website anymore, now there is just an MX400.:

Logitech mice page

The benchmarks at look to have been done back in Dec '06; maybe the MX500 and MX300 were combined into the single MX400 for '07. That 'Revolution' really does look nice. The MX518 ranked second overall, and is still part of the logitech line.

And also didn't require an overclocking or tweaks.

I have a G7 and love it. As for people complaining about short battery life *shrug* so what if you have to change it once a day, it takes all of 10 seconds.

I'm not really here, but I'm just tossing this in here. (Internet has been broke here at the house for a week, could be a week more till it's back up properlike.)

As Evil pointed out, the older G5 is probably one of the best choices. In all seriousness, you won't notice the cord at all. I have never, ever, not even once, 'flicked' the cord of the G5. It's a light / thin one that doesn't slide around like the regular mice cables.

But, the point that the G7 is very similar is important. Note that the early gen G7s did have really crappy battery life. I had one, and it would only go about 6 hours of gaming time before it would run out and I'd have to swap it out. I hear this was resolved and the batteries last a lot longer (in addition to not using the slick surface anymore). So, a current G7 should be fine if you absolutely can't do a corded one for some reason.

Also, and I'm on a poop connection, so I won't be doing my usual links, somewhere around here there is a link to the new G9. (I know my site has one.) It's really horrifically expensive, but it's got a changable faceplate and more buttons than the G5. It's also got a bit more resolution, but that won't really matter as 1600 and higher is fine for 1920x1200 res, so unless you are running that high, or higher, or really like a super responsive mouse, you probably don't need it.

I'd say try the G5.
