Ok so here's the deal, I live in a house that I rent but on the property there are two other houses and they have renters as well. The same landlord owns all three of these houses and we all share the same internet. The modem and router are luckily in my house so I can hook up my xbox to live and play via Ethernet chord.

Lately, and this is always latenight (after 1 am) I've had nasty lag when playing online and I fear that someone in one of the other houses is downloading some torrent or whatnot and ruining my connection.

I was wondering if there anything out there that can help me see if they are downloading crap and put a stop to it temporarily while i play my halo!

I know its kinda sneaky but i mean no one harm in this I simply would like to play my games and not get lagged out.

There actually is a really awesome tool you can use to solve your problem, and the best part, it's absolutely free.

The tool is called "go talk to your neighbor"!

It works really well. All you do is walk up to the door of the two other renters, knock, and when they answer...describe the issue you're having and ask if they might be able to work something out with you. It's possible that neither of them are actually downloading anything...maybe one of them has a virus that's going out and spamming people late at night. Help them get rid of the virus, and they might even bring you some baked goods or something.

obviously I would, except like I said this problem happens about 1am neighbors will not take kindly to a knock at that hour...anyways no worries...thanks for the advice.

I meant you could knock at their door during the day, and ask about their nightly downloading. Just telling them what you told us would probably at least get the discussion going.

Also, maybe it will turn out they are gamers too and you could get together.

In defense of mystery 1am man, I'm up at 1 all the time using quite a bit of bandwidth... an not for porn I'm sure there are others.

As far as bandwidth goes, I know there are routers such as this, that will prioritize packet flow to certain applications ie games (or whatever else). We had one in the house i lived in for a couple years and it worked beautifully. Not sure if any other brands have similar functionality, or if there are apps that'll do similar things.

Thanks Renekal that's more of what I was looking for, but I will talk with my neighbors when I get a second. I think my connection might also have something to do with the fact that im out in Hawaii. But like I said it's an intermittent problem. Thanks guys keep up the good work.

Do you have firmware access to the router?

And if it's password protected, couldn't you just manually reset it and google the default admin password? It's been a while since I've mucked around with mine.

I was going to recommend a password change, but he's sharing it with 3 different households, so he can't lock them out.
