Default Driver signing oddness

Ok, so this is strange. I downloaded the 180.84 beta drivers for my 8800, the executable says it's signed by nvidia, but during install I get the "it's not signed blurb". WTH I think, I'll try them out anyway.

On reboot I forgot to disable the signing requirement (Vista 64), but apparently everything started up ok. I checked the device manager, no errors reported, driver is running fine, except I check the properties and Vista knows it's not signed. Surely that can't be right? Anyone know what's going on, or seen this before? So far as I was aware the exe being signed should make no odds if the driver itself isn't...

Otherwise my PC is running just fine, games seem to work as they should and even the physx thingie seems to be functioning. It's just when the OS behaves unexpectedly I've got to scratch the subsequent intellectual itch. Did MS tone down signing reqs while I wasn't looking?

Gift.

You may be mixing up driver signing and WHQL signing. The first is the technical signature required that the driver is loaded with vista 64, the later is something microsoft does to verify a driver has been tested by them to match some criteria (or the like). Driver signing is kinda required, WHQL is rather optional.

Thanks Hatto, I do understand the difference. I suppose the Device manager properties may be referring to WHQL, but that still doesn't explain the warning I got during installation. Perhaps I misread the pop-up but then I've never had Vista flag up signed but non-WHQL drivers like that before (e.g. my X-Fi drivers).

Anyhoo, it's no biggie, like I said the PC works fine, just a minor itch.
