Default Windows 7 Video Problems

I installed win 7 on my new computer which is using a 5870 card and when I try and play either tv or any video file in media player or another player there is no sound and the colour is screwed (like a negative). I have all the newest drivers.

This happens only with video. What do I do?

Sounds like a codec or driver problem...but I have no experience with Windows 7 / Vista so I'm shooting in the dark. It seems a little like it might be two problems, though. Not having sound seems like it could be a different thing than having wacky-colored video. Are you sure all the appropriate volume controls are set for the type of content you're trying to play? Is it possible something is muted?

I'd check around for latest codec packs (they still use those in 7?), and if not that, maybe trying jumping back to an older video driver to see if it's just a problem with the most recent release.

Hopefully somebody with hands-on experience will jump in with more suggestions.

Thanks Fozzik. I was able to get the sound working because there were several updates for drivers that I downloaded but I'm simply stuck with the colour problem. Everything is red and blue only for video although I played a video in adobe's player and it worked fine but still messed up in Hauppauge tv viewer or windows media centre.

I've had similar things happen now and then. Often it can be fixed with a driver update, but if it isn't you can "turn down" the acceleration in the control pannel and that usually fixes it.

How do I turn down the acceleration? I went into the catalyst command centre thing and I couldn't find it anywhere.

No no, it's the basic windows acceleration.

No clue where it is on Win 7, but on my XP here I go...
Control Pannel -> Performance and Maintenance -> System -> Advanced tab -> Performance -> Advanced... and um normally it's there. Forgot I don't have a real graphics card on this netbook, but i think that's where it should normally be. Then turn 'video acceleration' down a notch or two.

Note that this is really a pain in the butt solution, as you only want to turn it down when running that video.

I'd say check for graphics drivers and DX updates first, and only do the turning down as a last resort.

What rabbit said Make sure you have all the latest drivers and such. Actually before I'd touch the accel options, I'd try removing and re-installing the drivers.

Ok thanks guys! I've been losing it lately trying to get this fixed. I still have another week or so before I absolutely need it working properly and if I can't get it working by then I'm going to blow up my computer.

I found it where you guys said it would be except it was on my motherboard tab in the advance settings. I have the Asus P55 deluxe and it uses something called Splendid for extra visual effects and it completely ****ed up the colour on the tv signal and any video played.

Thanks again for the tips. I can get some sleep now.

Software from hardware companies = bad.

I tend to ONLY install the bare minimum drivers I download online and leave any and all software on the CD where it belongs.

That's one of my very first tasks when setting up a new computer...figuring out how to NOT install all the bloated "packages" that come along with drivers these days.

Well said. Fortunatly these days one can get generic drivers for the various chipsets of almost all components. In fact it is not a good idea to buy hardware where this ain't true.
