Default Nvidia GTX 465

The Nvidia GTX 465 has officially hit the street (several cards on NewEgg). Glanced at a review or two and it looks to perform somewhere around the ATi 5830 - 5870 range, meaning it should be decent competition for the ATi 5850.

The Evga page implies it can run tripple screen (with the Nvidia 3D Vision even, which technically is a lie since the drivers aren't working for more than 1 screen in 3D yet). I emailed asking for clarification, as the GTX 470 and 480 are limited to two screens per GPU, meaning you'd need 2 or more in order to run tripple screen vs. any of ATi's series 5 cards which can all run Eyefinity on a single card. (Though I wouldn't recommend doing so below the 5770 card.) I doubt it's any different and that the GTX 465 can still only run 2 monitors per GPU, but I keep hoping they change and catch up to ATi on that. Until they do ATi is the much more attractive purchase. If they do though, that could flip things back to Nvidia if they don't require the Display Port as you'd have far more monitors to choose from.

Confirmation from Evga, the GTX 465 does not run more than two monitors on a single GPU.

Ya know, I still am not really buying into multi-monitor displays for gaming....I've seen some systems set up that way and the bezels, no matter how thin they are, bug the hell out of me I'd rather have a single huge screen for my game with maybe a second smaller monitor for other apps. And there are certainly work applications that could benefit from multi-monitors.

Lol, soon enough it will be moot I'm sure.....

Could be cloth like OLED displays that fold and bend, manufactured much like printing paper on huge rolls. Hehe, you'd go to Home Depot and buy yer display by the square foot Not to mention the huge potential for smart paper which would come along with that. Intel's long term roadmap for the Atom chip would pair well with this tech. Your display would also be the cpu/gpu, utilizing hundreds/ thousands of tiny processors in parallel.

Or perhaps there will be a breakthru in holographics, so we just have a virtual display and interface ala Minority Report.

There is a lot of good research and progress in both those areas the last couple years. Personally I think OLED cloth is very close from what I've read about it.... seems on that verge of breaking the cost barrier.

My 2cp.....

Peeps who hate bezels have already done bezelless setups with projectors. I even saw a vid of someone who had them projecting onto curved plastic so it was a single big evenly curved image.

Apparently you get used to the bezels after a while. At first it's like playing your games with a pair of sunglasses or something getting in the way, but having your entire vision filled makes it worthwhile. But then eventually your brain learns to kind of ignore the bezels and it's almost as though they are not even there.

I doubt I would ever do that kind of thing though unless I ended up with a better job and a LOT more disposable income. Not only is it expensive to buy high resolution screens and multiple displays, but you also need a top end PC to be able to make your games look good on it too. For now I'm happy at 1680x1050. At least I can crank the hell out of games at this resolution and they look purdy.

p.s. I remember I saw a screen made by Alienware which was about 4 foot wide or something, but it was curved... Basically like two 24" widescreen monitors side by side, but curved and with no bezel in the way. It looked really good but it was obviously a very early prototype. Monitor manufacturers have had a hard enough time getting good quality LCD screens out with minimal dead pixels and backlight bleed and stuff, I can imagine this kind of thing might take a while until it's ready for mass production. I'd love one though.

Indeed! I remember this monitor I wished I'd have seen it live. In fact I'd have stolen it! Might have a job putting it under my coat but heeeey

Lol that's the one! It's really nice. I wonder how long it will take them to get that in to mass production.

I expect we'll see 3 screen LCD's go into production before something like that. I don't see why they couldn't manufacture something in a 3x1 configuration with no bezel 'between' them. I'm actually surprised we haven't seen any yet. It must have something to do with how the screen works is why they haven't already done it, though I don't see how it would really be any different from going from 4:3 format to 16:10/16:9. This is just way wider.

I'd bet though when they do get it going it will be like one 'wide' section in the middle, then like 2 off to each side (so a total of 5 sections) so that it can 'curve' more naturally than 3 screens.
