Vanguard, one server game in July
Its official, all VG servers are merging down into one. No more Euro server, no more PvP server.
It really is needed, AND this opens a very very small window of a new/fresh server opening back up on the future with "core" ruleset and NO stuipd riftways everywhere or flying reindeer, etc.

If you see the merging of all servers into one as a possibility for a new server with a new ruleset opening up then you are truly deluded. The next step is closure of the game completely.

I wish I could debate this.

I was possessed by Joodah for a second there, yeah this is the game just hitting a rocky ledge on its spiral down to nothingness.

Official announcement:
Quote:
Beginning July 7th, 2010 at approximately 10:00 AM PDT, we will start the process of merging the three current U.S. servers of Telon into one server. It is our hope that this integration will result in a more consistent and higher player population which will, in turn, lead to an even more enjoyable and beneficial player experience.
Additionally, scheduled in August, SOE is planning to merge the Halgar server into the consolidated server mentioned above. Please read the forums for the specific date and downtime, as it is yet to be determined. Please note that the processes outlined in this email will occur for both the July and the August server merge; if you have further questions regarding the implications of the two scheduled consolidations, please read VGPlayers.com.
We estimate a downtime of 24 hours to complete each of the two the merges respectively.
Help determine Vanguard’s future! We’ll be hosting a poll on the Vanguard forums, beginning Tuesday June 8th, to determine the new name of the consolidated world server. Click on the button below to give your input and vote for your favorite!

I just love SOE and their public relations savvy. They announce a possible server merge, specifically saying Halgar will not be included, and t hen drop the issue for six months. Then, wham, they announce all servers will be merged into one in four weeks. They say to go to vgplayers.com for more info, don't put up more info, and then, in a forum thread, ask for questions on that topic so SOE can answer them (which will end up being only a couple of platitudes).
They cite population as the purpose of the merger but fail to do anything to work against the trend.

If only this game could have been emulated by someone like they did with EQ. I bet there would be an emulated server that is far better and far more popular than the actual game.

I was playing SWGemu (Pre CU) just last night. It was really busy, much busier than the SOE servers. The problem with EMUs is thst they are really hard to develop. For them to be legal you have to rewrite all of the server side code from scratch. I think the SWGEmu devolpers have taken about 3 years so far and it's stil not quite finished.

Can't they just put Vanguard to rest? I start to feel pity.

I'm sure they will when its revenue no longer supports the cost of one server.

Sadly the game must still be forking out a profit otherwise I am 99% sure they would shut it down. Unless its a test platform for SoE devs which it isn't because 3(?) people work on it.

My chime ins:
* I see going to one server as a good move for them at this point, though I argued against it when I was playing (but that was then).
* Yes of course, the game is dying a painful, prolonged death - appropriate for it's painful life I suppose. A "rocky ledge" is a great metaphor. It began it's death spiral the intant silly-ass released his much-vaunted set of post 50 improvements. We heard the first incontravertable death rattle when they put in a pink mount with a heart on it. Never ever have I seen such a criminial mismatch of content vs. theme in any such game.
* No, they won't turn it off if it is still making significant money. But they might change how they calculate that - maybe factoring in more drag for management overhead <insert your own guffaw here> at some point.
* VGEmu - that would be fantastic. Someone could finally make a semblance of what VG could have been.

It's the last gasp.

I gather the code is far too f'd up to easily be done that way..... no matter how much I would love to play that game

Shards of Dalaya was so well done. I always figured with Vanguard that either the game was too big and complex to emulate, that they made it un-emulatable on purpose, or that it was just so badly made that nobody of sane mind would be able to understand it.

And why on earth would anyone even want to emulate Vanguard? To be able to play a Bloodmage? To make the Vision come true one would need to revamp the whole game, much easier just to make a new one.

Well revamping the whole game is pretty much what the emulators do. But they get to use a lot of the core assets like graphics and sounds and music and stuff, all of which Vanguard has plenty of and it's all pretty good. I only ever had a few small issues with Vanguard and they could be fixed with a single patch, nevermind a whole revamp. It only never happened for me because the wrong people were at the helm.
