I don't think all investors are expecting a WoW-like return right off the bat. They would have to be idiots. WoW didn't even start with nearly the numbers they have currently...they built them up over time. I don't think it would be that hard to explain to a money person that the real money comes from long-term subscriptions and sustained success, not 10 million subscribers on day one (which is never going to happen for any game).
I think investors understand these things at least reasonable well. If not, I wouldn't want developers taking their money. Microsoft didn't pull the plug on Vanguard because they thought the game concept wouldn't work. Microsoft pulled out because they saw pretty clearly that Sigil wasn't going to have a finished game anything like what they had promised in a reasonable amount of time.
Brad had them sold on his original "vision", and they believed it would make enough money (otherwise Microsoft wouldn't have shelled out millions to Sigil in the first place). So to me, it's just a matter of making the right pitch to some reasonably savvy investors, and then DELIVERING on the concept.

Before release, Brad had mentioned that the planned ROI for VG was 250k players, and we assume that was a steady population for about a year. Sigil's problem was that they hit 200k early and then it dived as people left in the first month or two. Even at the early planned $25M over 3-4 years the investors were not expecting WoW numbers.

I personally would not consider to pay more than the average fee to be an online hamster anymore. MMORPG just don't involve enough skill to be worth it and even having regular GM events won't make up for that.
I have to admit I used to think differently but times (and games) change.

I wouldn't pay more than £20 a month and thats really the top end. Truth be told WoW costs about £10 a month and that sounds about right. I'd go to £20 in order to support an indie developer and help shape their game but I wouldn't feel I'd get a game thats of better value than Warcraft even if the game was better.

Well I think the key to all the speculation is that he was originally talking about game that was absolutely perfect for *You*. Like a custom made game for you.
So I don't think he would try to get away with making 'just-another-mmo' and charging ~$30 for it. But if it was something that felt custom made for me personally, and everything was pretty much as though I designed the game myself... then I would probably stretch to about $30 a month. (That's about £20 or so I think). But I wouldn't go above that for a game. (Unless it was in the future when there is virtual reality and it could.... get me off, etc. )

Micro for you, maybe. For others, it would be Macrohard. :)

I wish Brad would post more, preferably with some info on his intentions with a new game. I can't help but wonder what he is going to do...
This latest comment is pretty funny and weird. He vanishes for 25 years and then shows up all of a sudden and plugs the very game that 'dethroned' him and that he and we all know is a complete mess.
I'm sure he had some kind of agenda for doing that.

He's back again. Announced that he started a new company but it's making casual/social gaming. I'm not even sure what that is, but whatever. He said they'll have a go at MMO's sometime in the future.
I don't really care a whole lot anyway. I wanna see some fresh blood in the MMO game!

Yeah that's what I thought too. And I've watched my friend play Farmville, I was tempted to punch him.
I can't help but think Brad's name is so screwed in the industry now, that crappy little browser based Flash games is about as good as it gets for him now Of course he might be able to make something a bit better, like Trine or World of Goo or something, but I somehow doubt it.

If it's a decent casual RPG then it might be fun.

Maybe. I love RPG's. I've played some really good indi RPG's, but most of them make very little money and barely break even. Maybe he has enough followers to avoid that though. I dunno.

He's gone again... Blog down. Shame, all he had to do was post a little note once a month. Plenty of folks were interested. Perhaps it's just a temporary thing.

Hahah amazing he seems to have removed his Vanguard posts and every other post he made. I'd imagine this is where he'll announce the website for his new games company.
Guess it's bad business to have 95% of the comments pure hatred towards you.
