Upgrading -NEED HELP!
Hey!! Ok.. So I know for Vanguard im gonna upgrade my computer seeing as how its a 800mhz, 512ram piece o lagbox..
Now lets see.. Let's say i have around 400$ to upgrade with. (Give or take.. Gimme rough estimate.. higher lower..) I want to buy a new motherboard and processor.
What mobo/processor would you recommend?
I'll be in Australia for the next 6weeks.. I figure i might see if i can buy some compatable hardware.. save some $$.. hehe.
I know Athlon 64 is good.. What version/speed.. so on etc would you recommend? and what mobo?

ooof for $400 and looking at a athalon 64 you may have to steal the board...
i've been looking around at processors (based on fozzik's suggestions) and I'm looking at at least 350 for the processor alone and that is if I can get one hell of a deal

If the sole purpose in upgrading your system is to play Vanguard, perhaps you should hold off until the winter/spring as the game is still ages away from release.
Prices for components will be heaps cheaper including the new 1066 Mhz fsb boards.
cheers

Hate to break it to you but it looks like it's going to take more then $400 to upgrade for Vanguard. My advice, and it's already been stated, wait a few more months let prices go down, then splurge a little. You will need a nice graphics card, lots of ram, a decent processor, and probably a new power supply too. Lets face it, if your current machine is a 800 mhz you will need much more then an upgrade. My advice, build or buy a whole new machine.
That being said, if you are just going to buy the mobo and the chip I hear the AMD 64 4000 is great, the one with the San Diego core. That goes for $400. I believe that is a 939 pin chip so you will need a 939 mobo, those go anywhere from $150 - $200.

Good advice so far.
The computer you have now isn't one that you should be upgrading, I wouldn't think. Save up, wait until closer to Vanguard release...and replace it instead.
Buying a processor and motherboard is ok, but if you stick old RAM and an old Video card into it, and power it with an old power supply...you will just be strangling your fancy new CPU and Mobo to death with all the bottlenecks.
One of the things I have written up for when my section goes live is a set of basic "laws" about computer hardware. One of them is the law of seven. Basically it says that there are seven major parts of a computer, and you need to pay attention to all of them if you want to get all the performance you can for your money.
1. CPU
2. Motherboard
3. RAM
4. Video card
5. Hard drive
6. Sound
7. Support components (power supply and cooling!!)

interesting, thanks!
Ahhh gotcha.. Yeah hmm... *Prays it comes out for the xbox 360, or better yet, the xbox 360 is released before vanguards "Launch"*
- They did say that vanguard won't be one of the xbox 360's launch titles, if it is put out for the xbox360.. but that doesn't say a whole lot considering if the xbox360is due @ xmas.. then vanguard will be still ways away.. Figure @ LEAST good 10months minimum for beta.. most mmorpg's give a year or so in closed beta, then couple months in open.. Unless im wrong =[ -last thing i beta was WoW closed/open beta, which open was in phases... stress test.. open open.. so on etc.
Anyways.. Yeah.. damn. I've got enough $$ to buy a new puter if i wanted, but then i don't know if i could actually LIVE. hehe we'll see.
Thx again!

Lets see i spent about $400 on upgrades for my new comp but i reused some old components. Lets see I got an AMD board and atahalon 2800+ 64 chip for $250 i think then got a new graphix card $60 MX4000 invidea thats till i get my PCI xpress card which is about $300-400 itself. And got a new hard drive for about $100. But if you dont need the hard dirve you could proly get some DDR ram with he $100 i think that a 1gig stick runs about that much.
