I'm not a fan of science fiction on TV - all of what I had ever seen was nonsensically irrelevent as far as the dramatics of the serialization was concerned. It was, for the most part - frivolous, for lack of a better word.
Apart from reading a couple of books in Asimov's "Foundation" series in Junior High (who hasn't), I had almost no respect for the genre as a whole.
I'm the kind of idiot who likes Kurosawa and Bergman more then Spielberg and the Wachowskies. I even didn't perticularly enjoy the LOTR series too (sacrilege, huh) and hmm...pathetic character development nukes the enjoyment of a movie/TV series for me like nothing else.
But for the past 10 months, on and off...I've been outright captivated by this remake of a 1970s Sci-Fi series...Battlestar Galactica.
I didn't like the 1970s series. I thought it was just - well, 'weak' on many fronts as far as acting, plot, direction and a bunch of other things were concerned.
The series which started last year though - in 2004 - it's the first Sci-Fi series in the last 14 years (I seem to have been allergic to the genre right from infancy) which has had me riveted to the screen, locked in.
It's a Sci-Fi series, but it's almost like a drama series with a Sci-Fi background. And oh boy, is the drama good.
Lickably luscious as far as character driven drama goes. Some of the finest acting to grace the small screen, spearheaded by a cast which includes 2 times academy award nominee Mary McDonnel and brillaint veteran actor Edward James Olmos.
A real tour-de-force which raises some very complex questions about the nature of man among other things. And it's a fast moving plot to boot.
Anyone else around here like this baby, or am I the Helo on this Caprica ?
Battlestar Galactica airs at 9 pm CST on the Sci-Fi channel.
