How absolutely horrible. I love meat myself (yum) but this kind of thing is what gives vegans and vegitarians a bad name, and makes them look like kooks. their eating habits I think were irrelivant tot he death of that poor baby. He got down to 3.5 pounds? wow...

Damn, that scares me. Poor little thing

yeah I can't speak for the nutritional value of soy vrs other products, nor what standard formula is derived from. I'm not a hygenist

Also don't have all the facts, just the artical.

It should have never happened...

No it shouldn't.
I am about to have a baby (due in 3 weeks!) and plan to breast feed. However, I know because I've just looked in the last few weeks (just in case it doesn't work out), that soy and cow forumla's are identical for nutrition, both are fine fora newborn barring allergies. It DID say in the article that she was giving the baby soy milk though, not formula (which are of course specially designed for baby's). Maybe that is what was bad, the milk vs formula? Anyway, if my baby lost wight like that I'd be beating down the hospital door LONG before he/she was 3.5 pounds. Most parents would. These people obvioulsy had mental isssues or something.

Really sad story though. I don't really want to think about it anymore right now. I cry at the drop of a hat. Poor baby!

That sums it up. It's not an issue of veganism, it's an issue of willful maliciousness.

I understand veganism. Totally respect those that practice it.

However, when you go so far as to deny your child your own breast milk, you've actually fallen into a realm of insanity. I know I know, breast milk is an animal product and you don't want your child to eat animal products. I know I know, some people can't breast feed and use formulas. I know I know, there are soy based formulas that are Vegan approved.

Still...the logic behind not breast feeding your child because of your Vegan lifestyle totally confounds me.

But not nearly as much as holding an incredibly shrinking baby and not having the overwhelming urge to run to the doctor to find out why the hell your baby isn't GROWING.

People like this need to be strapped to a rocket on a one way trip in the middle of a black hole just to see what would happen to a human (if you can call these people human) falling into a black hole.

I never thought of that being the reason. Was it in this case? The one vegan couple I know breast fed their baby (this was about 4 years ago).
All the vegan sites I can find on the web encourage breast feeding. However, it appears a vegan mothers breast milk may be lacking all the fats and Vit b-12, and some other nutrients that babies need, things that we sometimes associate as bad for adults. So the mother has to stick to a really specific diet to make the breast milk nurishing, and the infant will have to take vitamin drops. I agree that deciding not to breast feed because it is an animal product is just...wrong on so many levels.

Anywho, I got off topic a bit there. I really don't think it's about the vegan thing. Like you say, the shrinking baby and getting no healthcare is THE issue here, and these kind of kooks just give Vegetarians a bad name. Although I think veganism may draw extremists out more often, not all of them are of course.

P.s. I understand vegetarians, even though I chose to eat poultry and fish myself. I have a harder time understanding strict veganism. It really just seem like taking something too far. My appologies to any vegans. I'll try and keep an open mind

Anyway, I hope these people are being prosecuted to the fullest extent, tnad that they never have another child!

Damn this is sad :-(

LOL Those morons. Seeing as how they are in Atlanta they are probably BHI or Muslim. A lot of the people that get involved with Veganism do it wrong because they are stupid and lazy and aren't dedicated to gaining the knowledge they claim to be seeking. Human milk can't even be classified as dairy as far as I can tell. . .these people were just stupid, probably induced by them following a proper vegan diet in the first place.

.... I doubt that these people were even really vegan; it's just their excuse for murdering their own child.

it's my guess, as all the facts aren't in the artical... that they only would feed their child vegan soy milk, not breast milk, not formula... And the child refused it until it starved to death.

They never took the kid in for weight loss prolly because they knew they were the cause...

I'm assuming they felt if the child was hungry enough, he'd eat.

All the artical said was they did not feed the child.
