Storyline
Just wandering what the story line is in Vanguard. I just realised i've never seen any storyline trailers or info on it.

Arguably, this is the main component missing from Vanguard. Storyline is needed to help with immersion for sure. Perhaps they will add it over time, but starting with such a huge world makes it rather difficult to tie all together.
In 30 levels I have yet to see any kind of lore tie it all together. Sure some quest lines seem coehesive, but the big picture is fuzzy at best.
Honestly they should have started with 2 massive continents, one good and one bad. Sound familiar? Maybe. But I think black and white works. Expansions could have added to the palette.
Have my fingers crossed that the new Vanguard team spends some time and money on writers!

You can find a lot of the world lore in the diplomacy sphere. It seems that each different parley drops some sort of information on what has gone on before. Though, like our world, the information carries with it a cultural slant, which gives way to the fact that there isn't just one evil and one good force in the world, but each race, each city and village having their own story and their own problems. Some are intertwined with another culture, some are stand-alone.
One thing I have yet to see in games such as this are the why's about the different classes. Some are pretty simple to define (warrior, rogue), but what about the others? Why do we have paladins and rangers? (And I'm not referring to "because other games have them!") Why are there 4 distinct healer classes, and where did they come from? One of the best games in this regard is the Action RPG Sacred. You know why the 6 classes exist, where they come from, what the class motivation is, but even in that game it didn't take it very far. In most MMO's I've played, it just seems like, while there is racial lore all over the place, some of the special classes (not implying that they're better) just seem to have magically appeared at some point in the past and no one seems to know why.

Nah, I'm usually against total evil (really, really overdone in fantasy especially), at least for player races or continents. I thought it was just silly in EverQuest 2, and way too cliche, if anything it made me dislike that game more initially, it's got some solid content but the wonderful soapy Qeynos and the horrible dictator ran Freeport just got childish. I'm glad they have what can be considered good/evil on the same continents, keeps things interesting. As for the lore, I think the whole point of Vanguard is that there was a cataclysmic war and after focusing on rebuilding, you're here to discover what happened. Past lore is irrelevant, thank god, I'm tired of trying to care about some knight that lived 300 years ago and slayed Mor'Dag the Dream Eater

I think they were aiming for a player created storyline through diplomacy, with possibly a bigger long term story of extraplanar incursions.
If you do some of the diplomatic writs you get a good sense of the current state of affairs of the world. Kojan is interesting because each of the races is considering war with or alliance with each of the other races. You can try and convince the Orcs to ally with Tanvu to take on the Gulgrethor or you can get them to team up with the wood elves to take out Tanvu and then work together against the Gulgrethor.
Of course there is no in game affect for completing these missions yet, just back story. Maybe they were thinking of making the game dynamic eventually, dont know.

Thestra:
The undead invaded Thestra and took over Old Targonor. They threaten to invade the remainder of the continent.
The forces from Kaon are infiltrating the forest lands of the high elves.
The dwarves are fighting the gwartak, hold the front against the undead, and have a branch of dwarves (the oathbreakers) who want to start their own kingdom.
Qalia:
Elementals are puring out of Stiirhad invading the continent.
Kojan:
The Ulvari are invading.
Basically each continent is getting invaded by something.

There's a lot of some really interesting stories if you actually read quests and talk to NPC's. Would be nice to have one central story though. One bad faction that's enemies to everyone. Might have to wait for an expansion but oh well.
