Criminals, pedophiles and idiots have existed as long as humanity has...it's the current attitude towards children that's changed. The prevailing opinion (in the US) seems to be to wrap them in protective shells, which I'm guessing isn't going to turn out well later on.

Yes, it is. There are more of them because we're a more populous country, but I doubt that as a percentage of the population we're seeing more of them, and may well be seeing fewer.

This has nothing to do with protecting children. It has to do with the authorities taking every report of "OMG that guy is going to hurt me" seriously, and every paranoid "victim" making sure to report everything that looks like it might be used to fool someone into thinking that there's a possibility of a threat of violence.

Paranoia + a system that rewards and feeds it = 11 year olds being put in jail for packing rubber heat.

Lol nice sarcasm there. Can we start with Yellowbook? (does anyone actually USE that thing?) But, anyone willing to give up a little freedom for a little safety deserves neither. When are people gonna learn from history?

Sleipnira where do you FIND this stuff? I want a few bookmarks

If I ever pointed a gun real or fake at another person let alone another car while driving down the road my parents would have beat my ass until it was blue. It's called common sense. And have you guys seen some of the rubber band guns available these days? They are pretty badass and the article mentions this one was black and looked like the barrels of a shotgun. I don't blame the people for reporting this kid and his dad driving down the road pointing a gun at cars.

When I was 11 years old (1981) my dad would have kicked my ass if I was pointing a toy gun at passing vehicles.

This 11 year old kids dad says there's nothing wrong with the situation? Someone should kick the DAD's ass and then kick his son's ass for him.

This isn't a case as much about paranoia as it is about stupid & lazy parenting.

** EDIT: amusing the previous poster posted the same sentiment at exactly the same time **

Actual most of the unsual stories are on Yahoo/AOL or CNN news sites not a lot of searching needed..

though occasionally just bored surfing leads me to some others

While I don't think it was necessary to arrest the child..
I do agree about pointing even a toy gun at someone being punished..

I know we were never allowed to do it, & the rule still stands for my children, my niece & nephew

All I had to do was look at the town the story originated in. Living in Florida for 25 years, you learn the names of a lot of small towns. Ocoee is a backwards-ass redneck town. What we aren't hearing is the probability that the complainant is someone who knows someone and probably has a grudge against the boy or his father. She screamed loud enough and swore out the deposition. Unfortunately, if the cops were to actually use good judgement, they would have been reprimanded for dereliction of duty.

Common sense is an uncommon virtue.

Actually, if you read the story in the original link, even they said the gun looked more like a stick rather than a real gun. Was it stupid? Yep. Was it a case that got blown all out of proportion? Yep. Is it newsworthy? Nope.
