Going AMD would seem to be the best route all the way around though. I mean you can go a bit lower than what you have posted and still be pretty mainstream AMD'wise (is that a word?) . Intel may have a better high end product but if its gonna do what he's saying, why bother?

Did you even bother reading the requirements he has? He's number crunching in Matlab.

The only math like tests I've seen used are Super-Pi, which the Core 2 Duos just dominate in.
For non-gaming you totally want an Intel. (With gaming they are pretty close, with Intel showing a slight edge.) In my original reply I was trying to go small form, which is why I went with AMD first, I'm more familiar with their small form stuff, but if he's going full sized, you can look at pretty much any Intel board. (Though you may want to go with a series 6 board, or 975/965(?) to be safe.)

I DID read them, I just saw the 1000 $ price tag and wasnt taking into account the new price drops. I didnt realize until looking at your article link there exactly how far ahead the dual cores where working at in single application programs - thanks for the link.

The funny thing is you could have asked the exact same question 5 years ago, or I guess even 10 years ago and would get the exact same answer. Intels unless they are dropping the ball tend to be far far better choices for workstations.

It's nothing to do with the amount of cores, or at least we haven't got benchmarks for it. The main reason Intel are so far ahead in these benchies is the quality of the internal FPU. I'd love to see how a quad core compares - gut instinct is its gonna be *far* better, but GJ said Matlab isn't able to deal with multi cores except under specific circumstances.
I bet they absolutely scream in Maya and such.
*nb, my job involves benchmarking 2-64 cpu machines running PPC, UltraSPARC, C2D etc.

Not a good idea to make generalizations like that... it would definitely depend on your exact application and the time when you asked the question. For the last few years (until the Core 2's) AMD's desktop, workstation, and server processors were all MUCH better than Intel's architecture-wise... and AMD's platform for multi-CPU workstations and servers is still arguably much better than what Intel has.
Intel definitely has a technology lead right now with the CPUs...but their platforms (motherboard chipsets, bus technologies, etc) need some serious work. I imagine AMD's native quad-cores will get them back in the game CPU-wise (or at least I would hope).

Some power house server setups are also moving to the PS3 cell core for power, but we won't get into that.

Heh, yeah maybe I should just get her (us) a PS3 and a MATLab port.

Get a Wii and have fun and you'll forget all about math.
