Default My boot drive had a sex change and now wants to be called E:

Other than being unplugged and replaced for a while before being put back in again nothing has changed with my boot drive but now it insists on being E: rather than C: this has caused a LOT of problems with registry info all demanding programs are at the C: or that i should "insert" the C: before it will work.

Granted it's only really Microsoft products and software that this has broken, all games, drivers and firefox etc work fine still... thankfully.

Windows does have a tool to change driver lettering, but it doesn't work if its the boot drive. Does anyone know how my drive had this sex change and why no matter how many times i unplug it/plug it in that it still refuses to take the vacant C:

I only have 1 HD, no floppy and 1 DVD drive (that i've tried unplugging too), the HD is on SATA 1 (although I've tried others since).

I've also tried running a windows repair, which didn't help.

Do you have any virtual drives from programs like Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120?

LOL sex change got me to look at this thread

Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is something could have become changed in Cmos... the settings that are used at bootup. Usually you get a message to press an 'F' key to enter cmos at powerup (before windows or anything else starts to load).

Some people may not see or notice it, it usually only lasts a second and it's the very first thing you see (usually). If your moniter is slow to react on powerup you may never see it. (can't say i've ever experienced that but...)

Sounds like a wierd problem, but if you have done nothing that you can remember to cause this, it could be something like this.
