I think the only MMORPG left to follow for the next few years from the large game studios is SW:TOR. I would like to think Star Trek will do all right but after seeing Champions Online get slapped by CoH fans, Cryptic may be on bad streak.
Asian MMORPGs do not work in the western market on monthly subscription fees or at least thats my view on it. Rising Force Online (RF) was hyped quite a bit but that sunk quicker than a brick and is now dead. Final Fantasy didn't work for many and I have no interest in the next one but thats more my personal opinion of Asian games, I hate the art design, story, graphics, and gameplay (generally it's a grind fest though the new FF does not look that way).
But I don't think the real success story is from the large games at all. If money is the only goal of a game it'll be exactly the same as the last one. I think the true success story lies with older games that keep a solid player base, such as UO or even the original EQ. That stands as a testament that not only has the company made a great product but that the team working on it are loyal and really do care about what they charge people to play.

STO is interesting with some unique aspects to it, however, it's painfully obvious that Cryptic is trying to rush the project out the door. I think the roughness around the edges, bugs, and whatnot are going to turn a lot of people away shortly after release. It'll probably follow the death spiral of so many current MMOs; huge release followed by drastic decreases in subscriptions.

Do you not consider Square Enix a 'large game studio'?

Not in this genre perfect no. I also dislike all asian MMORPG's though thats my own view. I hate the story, art style, everything. Animations are great however but if only they spent the time to make games that appeal to me.

I've said it a couple of times in a couple of places before, but I'll say it again for those that have missed it. Shards of Dalaya is an "Alternate Universe" variation on Classic EQ that is not SOE-run and is nearly as fun as the original EQ. If you loved EQ, and you cannot find a game to play right now, you should try this.

Whoa the OVF has been a ghost town since the announcement. Don't let the big thread fool you. I think a lot more people moved on then people think.

I don't like to get involved with emulated servers because they tend to either go bust or get sued and as a result get shutdown.
Dragon-RD, you do realize that Final Fantasy XI currently retains as many players as Everquest did at it's peak right? 500,000 active subscribers is hardly considered "small for the genre". Also gameplay wise it has much more in common with old style Western games such as EverQuest and Ultima: Online than it does with Asian games such as Lineage. It's okay to criticize games but your criticism of Final Fantasy XI seems entirely uninformed and therefore lacks substance and creditability.

I was always curious about FFXI but never gave it a shot. I think when FFXIV releases (did I make those roman numerals correctly?) then I'll give it a try.

I just couldn't stand to look at it. My mate seemed to like it but also stated that it was hard to find groups, so seeing as the game is massively group based it seems like it requires more subs than its got. Though it's probably like Unreal, thats a Deathmatch FPS but holds no ground over Quake at least for me.

I share(d) the same concerns. My understanding is that Shards Of Dayala has been up and continuously running for at least 5 years and that they have already gone to court once, and won.

Why all the arguments on the OVF about Sartok being merged? I mean I can't believe that people think it wont be merged?
Ill quote Silius
This is not a definite option as we have some technical issues that did not exist when we merged servers last time and as such we need to work out the details there.
What do these people think the technical issues are in it? Its merging the PVP server with the PVE serves. Not really that hard to figure out.

ikaoma420, you're spot on what you posted last page, the OVF are an absolute ghost town.
Also they should merge all servers into one. Though I've a funny feeling the reason the merge won't happen is to do with what Brad had posted in Part 4. The game could not be more dead at the moment based on moral and community feedback (only from the forums however).

I noticed that too when I've checked the OVF lately.....Silius has still not substantially said anyhting about the bombshell post....and so it is just slowly dying away. Besides, less people care anymore
