Login Issues
Is anyone else having trouble logging in to the site? I'm in only because this computer was set to automatically log in.
When I try to log in to the admin panel, it's telling me that I've used up all my login attempts and should try again in fifteen minutes. I only tried to log in once, so something must be screwy.
Another poster sent me a PM on another message board telling me that he couldn't get logged in to SV.

I'm set to auto-login as well. Some people were reporting funkiness on the like posts disappearing last week. Maybe something is going on with the site in general?

(trying to post this a second time because it gave some weird error I've never seen before about not being able to connect)

Yes, it was 'down' this morning (same error message as Fozzik). It appears to be working now.
edit: As I was posting this, I got

Is anyone still steering this bus? If not, I'm guessing that it's only a matter of time before the database just goes tits-up, and then there will be no more SV.
I certainly don't know enough to really keep the guts up and running...I've only got enough knowledge to do the basic admin stuff.

Ack, what do you think is happening that would make us lose the whole SV thing? Wouldn't there be a backup?

Likely there has been no DB maintenance run in some time unless there's something automated setup by whomever used to do that. If there is, it's likely no longer sufficient given the likely size of the board/posts etc. and should be reviewed and updated. May also be something corrupt which needs to be corrected via maintenance.

Yep, just got this message posting this post -

Databases like the one used for these forums need regular upkeep... maintenance, upgrades, and tweaks. Since Nola left, we haven't had anyone who understood website and forum backend stuff enough to do any of those things... so the site has been on autopilot.
As is probably obvious, when you run a plane on autopilot with nobody sitting in the chair...eventually you're going to have a date with the side of a mountain.
The database will slowly become more and more buggy and outdated, and eventually it will crash. Who will bring it back up when it does? I'm not even sure the UberGuilds.org folks who are hosting our site are even around anymore, and I don't know how to contact them if the site goes down.
My SV email hasn't worked right in like a year.

It's as if the gods are working hard to make sure that anything about VG falls into dust and blows away with the wind. But will this website last longer than the game?

Well I will try to see if there's anyone who can let us know whether the site is being maintained somewhere.
In the meantime, SV as a guild is interested in Rift and we hope to continue the website for communication about both VG and Rift.

We'll definitely need someone who knows how to run a website, then.
I thought everyone knew we were on autopilot... I apologize if I gave the impression that I was maintaining things. I just don't have the skills, knowledge, or time to learn.

The way you and Rabbit run off the topics in the hardware section made me think you guys were the experts!

Login has been messed up for me all week. I try to log in and it says I have tried too many failed login attempts and sends me an email saying:
Quote:
Your account on Silky Venom has been locked because someone has tried to log into the account with the wrong password more than 5 times. You will be able to attempt to log in again in another 15 minutes.
The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 4.53.50.37
|
And that IP address is the server itself: http://www.robtex.com/ip/4.53.50.37.html
Eventually through changing my password and waiting I get in.

I was able to login but only after
1. Not using the usual login method (name passowrd at the top of the screen). Even if I subsequently clicked on 'forgot password' link that would pop up after I login and got a new password and waited fifteen minutes to login I still got the 'too many login' error.
Instead I
2. Replied to a thread without logging in. This brings up a slightly different login screen - one where you can click on 'forgot password' before you login.
A. Reply to a thread will bring up a login screen.
B. Click on the forgot password link.
C. Go to email/click on link/get new password.
D. Login to the reply to thread login screen.
Anyway, hope this helps someone having the same problems I did.
