I really like what I saw.

The graphics were good. The combat was fast-paced, but seemed somewhat tactical considering all those cool sneaky thief things he would do like phase through the mob to it's backside or throw down a smoke bomb and confuse the target who just sits there wildly swinging at the smoke. There appeared to be a lot of environmental objects to pick up or interact with.

The dynamic event reminds me of public quests, but it seemed much less XYZ rigid. It seemed to flow naturally as events unfolded. The map was brilliantly detailed the way it scaled from zooming in/out. I loved seeing the little path that your character had previously walked.

Maybe I should just watch some more videos and try to get excited about the gameplay instead of dwelling on the features I truly detest.

Being excited is more fun.

With healthy skepticism still intact, of course.

Just as a quick comment... Totalbiscuit appears to not understand the various content delivery methods in-game. He's working on a renown heart in the beginning of the video, and calling it a dynamic event.

This is a common mistake (thinking renown hearts or personal story quests are dynamic events), and leads to a lot of the comments you see people making that "dynamic events don't seem to be anything too special...just regular old quests in a bit of a new wrapper."

It's important to differentiate so that you know what your looking at while watching the videos. Here's an article that explains the difference.

By the way, Ashe, if you just watch TotalBiscuit's videos you'll get a decent overview. His earlier walkthrough videos from the conventions last year were some of the best. Not because they were the most comprehensive, or even totally correct in the info department. They were great because of his commentary and because they clearly show the experience of an entirely uninitiated player. Definitely a good place to start.

As long as you understand the difference between personal story, renown hearts, and dynamic events...because TB doesn't.

I love total biscuit he plays games with the avg guy perspective. No he doesn't go all technical, (shit I barely ever saw him dodge once lol). But he puts out about 15 videos a week on multiple games and platforms. I don't see him being able to focus long enough to get into the details like we do, because he has a lot going on. I have subscribed to him for awhile and find his commentary always fun and entertaining.

Personally I don't want specifics I can sort all that out on my own when I get hands on. I find if I know to much it ruins it for me.

My GF asked me just last night "Are you watching GW2 videos again?" I gave a sheepish "Yes" she replied "Don't you dare get to bitchin when you play that, that it is nothing new! I mean after you have seen it all!" I close to desk top "yes dear" she continues "You get all hyped up and happy, then you get to playing it, and then you get all depressed because it didn't live up to what you thought it was in the videos! I'm tired of it! Turn it off get the game and play like a noob like everyone else on release!" I swallow hard "Yeah your right"

Seriously though it is like telling a crack head that drugs are bad. Like He is just gonna have an epiphany and say "Oh yeah you are right" not gonna happen, but she is still right.

I would mention that totalbiscuit's videos have the UI very oversized (he makes it really big for some reason, maybe he has bad eyes). It's quite a bit less obtrusive and kindergarten-esque if you see other people playing with the UI scaled down to a more reasonable size.

I'm not saying it isn't decidedly a casual MMORPG...there's no denying that in terms of the accessibility. They have removed a good deal of grind and treadmilling, and the leveling speed is quite fast (although that means something totally different in this game than in previous MMORPGs). What's interesting, however, is that a lot of players are reporting that the actual content...the dynamic events and encounters in the personal story...are actually tuned to be quite challenging. Players who aren't skilled with their class are dying a lot.

http://guildwars.incgamers.com/blog/...-beta-coverage

This at least presents the potential that we may finally be seeing a game with accessiblity AND depth in terms of gameplay and challenge. It would be a first, I think. Most developers and players always equate accessibility with carebear little-league "everyone's a winner" sort of game play...but a game doesn't have to be shallow and easy to be accessible.

Easy to play, but hard to master... at least that's what I think we're looking at.

Well you might think differently if your eyesight was poor. I don't think Totalbiscuit's eyes are poor I think he films that way on purpose so people can see the abilities he mouses over plus it's easier to read for others and I know I appreciate it.

Immersion is in the eye of the beholder. I have friends who are totally immersed in golf, playing it, and watching it on TV, but it bores the hell out of me.

As for me I enjoy a world where there is always something going on and something to do and a challenge. The PvP looks to be all the challenge I need even if the rest of the game is WoW like easy (which I doubt). I often posted in other forums about the need for PvP to have more than 2 sides and this game finally delivered it. I also like that the WvWvW area has just as much to do as the regular world besides PvP. It has quests/encounters etc..

The video excited me because of the content and the way it just happens and how it happens.I like that you can choose to involve yourself or not. It is not like it is forced on you. I like I can actually do all the content and not having to worry about "Oh shit I outleveled that and can no longer do it unless I reroll". I like that things happen differently at different times of the game day. So one day while I'm rolling through an old zone I might stop and and go "Oh WOW I never saw this before I need to do this".

I have realized after all my years of gaming that unless I build a game myself I am always going to be somewhat disappointed.

I wonder why we don't all just get together and make our own game. Seems like we've been talking about it forever.

And we would need to program, and I'm allergic to hard work

It's a thought though... You see that guy Notch and his game Minecraft? 80 million bucks is a good way of motivating me... There is also that thing called startup.com or something, which lets people start a project and if it's interesting and promising enough, people can invest in it.

Kickstarter.com

Some old-school devs have gotten a lot of funding for future projects. It's a cool idea, but one that's open for disaster. I can only imagine when the Brad McQuaids of the world start using the system to bring in millions of dollars from the public and then fail to produce a game.
