"Wake up lad! Yer mam needs em pumpkins! An they aint pickin emselves outa the ground and the zombie horde strike ma down before ah dig em up mysen! Na get up ye lazy arse!"The shouting of his father stirred Braefar, he sat up in his bed the cold willowroot morning air hitting his body making him shiver violently.
"Ugh I....Ah Ah"Braefar sneezed loudly finally awake enough to feel his head pounding remembering the last night still cloudy he pondered about the ale he and Penny had stole from Ole Grumpies stash, they had almost been caught last night drinking if Penny wasnt still half sobre Braefar would have fell in the cannal and surely everyone would have came out to see the comotion.
Braefar managed to pull himself upright looking around his small room proud that he this was all his! He had it all to himself even though he had three older sisters! Right now he would call this a godsend as had he been sharing his room with his sisters he would of no doubt been caught staggering to bed in the early morning drunk. He smelt his breath DAMN! it still smelt of ale he would have the chew on some mint when he got to the vegetable patch as long as he could keep it to himslef till then he would be without trouble which would mean avoiding everyone over breakfast.
Braefar finished dressing pulling a woolen shirt over his thin cloth shirt he has slept in.Seeing as Braefar never really took great pride in his appearance and smell he didnt mind keeping the shirt on he had slept in.He looked into the small mirror on the wall opposite and saw himself, happy he didnt look too bad he walked out into the hallway shutting the door behind him.His nose caught the smell of pie, his favorite snack, his dry mouth suddenly burst with siliva provoked on by the smell of the cooked hot pie.
"Ahhh! Is that pie mam?" Braefar quried his mother as he walked into the kitchen."Yes lad it is and if you dont hurry it'll all be gone! Your Pa has allready had three slices and your sisters are about to tuck in!"At the sight of the steaming pork pie on the table Braefar's eyes lit up his suspisions confirmed as he sat down a took his own slice he looked at its tender pork centre eager to devour it, he tried to stop himself from looking greedy to no avail, the pie had disapeared in just two large bites followed by another..... and another!......and one more! The Halfling sat back in the chair content with the four slices of pie in his bloated stomach.
"Hahaha!"His farther laughed at the sight "What ye trying to do lad rival ye old Pa in pie eating?! You'll neva acomplish it ye fat porker!"The room burst into joyous laughter as Braefar and his farther stood up in union ready for a hard days pumpkin digging for the upcoming faire.Perhaps this year with pumpkin pie for sale the family would make money out of the faire.
"We'll be back with ma best pumpkins for yer pies love"Braefars dad Brughar said to his mother Milly"O really they best not be rotten this year! Or you'll be getting a nasty bump on the head! Im not selling no rotten pie to the lovely folk here. Now how long are you going to be?"Milly answered her husband.Brughar chuckled as his put on his cap and opened the door breathing in the freezing air before wandering outside towards his pumpkin patch.
"Bye Mam!"said Braefar as he walked out the door closing it behind him ignoring his sister completely"That boy" Milly said unimpressed "Girls will you hurry up and finsih your pie and help your Mam with the dishes!"asked Milly to her three daughters respectfully, all three nodded one after the other.
.................................................. ...............
"Ok lad a think a want that row there, its got some lovely sized uns in"said Brughar a slight hint of chill in his voice, Braefar tried to reply but found himself too cold to bring himself to speak his teeth chittering together violently so he substituted it for a simple nod unfolding his arms he picked up a spade in the small simple wooden shed next to the pumpkin patch slowly wadling to the row he slammed the spade into the ground surprised to find the soil soft and easily able to dig up his first pumpkin of the day.
After thirty minuits most of the row had been dug up by either him or his father when a large earthworm found itself crawling out the exedingly large pumpkin Brughar had just dug up." DAMN WORM!"screeched Brughar as he stood on the worm with all his wieght and fury.At the sight of the worm being crushed Braefar felt somthing build within him...Anger? but why? it was just a worm right?...
Braefar was snapped back into reality as he realised his father was starting at him, he must of made his anger obvious as his father expression showed confusion."Ya ok lad?" asked Brughar " Y...Yes sir .....sorry" answered Braefar."Good were done ere get em pumpkins in that sack an were off back ome". "Ok sir".
Braefar pondered his sudden burst of anger as he hoisted the full sack of punpkins onto his back it wieghed him down heavily slowing him but his father did not complain as if was having the same affect on him perhaps they had enough pumpkins here to make some spare pie for themselves?Braefar finished his thinking with no outcome but to ask his wise Grandma perhaps she will know she used to be a druid afterall she is in turn with these type of things.... at least Braefar hoped she still was.Braefar realised he was allready home his thoughts must of taken longer than he had realised.Opening the door he felt the warm gust of air coming from the hot room wind past his face as the sqeeling of a boiled kettle rung out into the air.
"Hello dear is your father with you? And do you have them pumpkins?"asked Milly "Yes Mam and the pumpkins are aplenty and quite large these sacks have weighed us down all the way home"answered Braefar as he entered the room putting the heavy sack down in the corner followed fastly by his father who had the manners to shut the door behind him."These are the best crop we've ad in ages love they should do great perhaps leftovers? Hehehe"chirped Brughar
"You greedy halfling!"Milly scoulded playfully."Now come on girls we'd best have a look at them pumpkins your Pa says there the best ever!....We'll see about that come on!"Milly said try to entice the three young women to help her."Yes Mam just one minuite we're coming"answered Daisy the oldest of the three "Come on hurry up and put that frog in his bed"Daisy hurried her sisters"He'll come in here soon and we don't want to get cuaght now do we"Daisy carried on giggling between each word."We're done lets go!" answered Yara. All three girls walk out into the hall leaving the door to the bedroom open by mistake, smiling with delight as they walked past their younger brother knowing what a shock he was in for later.
"Where have you been?! I've allready chose the pumpkins! Now hurry and start cutting and dont leave a single strand these are some good pumpkins and were not waisting them!"Screeched Milly angered by the girls lateness."Sorry mam it wont happen again"answered the sisters rythmicaly"Your damn right it wont or you wont be at the Faire tomorrow!"Milly ended the conversation, unaware that Braefar had wondered off and Brughar was now snoring loudly in the backroom , no doubt with a mug of ale and his pipe, she thought to herself angrily , that man honestly! Nothing but trouble her thoughts continued but still her steady hand glided the knife over and into the pumpkin as if she was programed to do so.
.................................................. .....................
Braefar sat with his back against the tall oak, "I wonder what penny is doing right now?" he pondered"I bet its somet exitin"."Braefar? That you lad? So here you are!"A withered voice interupted Braefars quiet pondering."Umm hello? O its you Grandma! Hello!"the young man said as his wise grandmas face came into view."Whats the matter with you young uns these days?! Barely recognise your own Grandmas, you should be ashamed, but thats not what im here for , what do you want to know lad?"she quiried"But how did you?" Braefar was silenced by slight smirk appear on his Grandmas face."Well ok then ill tell you this morning i .... Me and father we're digging up a row of pumpkins to sell in pies at the Faire when he ...well to be honest all he did was kill a worm but i dont know i felt...I felt angry"Braefar admitted.
Wise Ole Emma sat and listened to Braefar when he reached the end she almost danced with joy a large smile spread across her withering face from ear to ear."Bout time another came along!!!"she screamed in delight. " Another what Grandma?" Braefar was puzzled she had not let on anything about what she so happy about." A Druid lad , another one in the family!", "WHAT!? your saying i'm a druid?! but i....i... i dont know the first thing about a druid how am i meant to be one?!"
"O shhh your whining lad it comes from within! Not from training you are now one of the druids of willowroot all you have to now is learn how to; Control, Utilise, Use and respect your surroundings and the elements themselves! But alas i can not help you on your journey.... i am too old for such things now for if you want to learn more about your heritage you must travel all the way to the field of a young friend.....You must travel to the Ringol Fields!
The without another word Ole wise Emma stood up and wandered off into the fading light of willowroot leaving her Grandson to consider what she had said and his options for the future.Hmm i could walk all the way but that would take days and my mother would worry so much he pondered silently, perhaps a horse he decided he would ponder more when he the faire came,WAIT!?! Thats it! The Faire there would be plenty of horses for sale there , now all he had to do was wait he knew somhow he would leave for the Ringol fields he Grandma was always right it was a like she was suggesting his future to him, So he desided to embrace it ,he would leave the night of the faire!........
Braefar started the short walk home enjoying for the first time in a long while the scenery and the cold air softly passing onto his face, in his opinion the talk with his grandma had been well worth it he finally knew what his meaning in life was, what he was destined to be, and he was ready to make the most of it!Before he had realised it he fount heself standing infront of his fathers pumpkin patch, he must of really got caught up in his thoughts this is part his house and now he would have to turn around and treck back the other way! Damn thoughts he ironically fount himself thinking, on his way out the patch something caught his eye. Was that? was that the worm? he wandered over to the dead worm every step closer he felt anger swell up inside him, but unable to turn away he looked down discusted that someone could of killed such a thing....Such a poor defencless thing somthing clicked inside him HIS FATHER! HE DID THIS HE'S A MURDERER! AND THE ONLY JUSTICE FOR A MUDERER IT TO BE KILLED! DAMN HIM!.........What was he thinking? it was his own father how could he even consider this? what was he? he needed to learn to control it it was now or never he had to get his stuff and leave....Leave for thre Ringol Fields only there said he Grandma could he learn to control his heritage!
