The reason that's so cheap is because they are trying to get rid of the Pentium D processors...because they suck.
I probably wouldn't take advantage of that deal, myself...but *shrug*.

Oh... Well I guess maybe I shouldn't be quite so proud of my brothers setup in your hardware question thread.
Still, are Pentium D's that bad? I hadn't heard that myself, so what exactly is the issue with them? Too late to cancel the shipment, but it would be nice to know what to expect.

The Pentium D isn't really bad... it just isn't as good as most other processors on the market right now. It is basically the CPU that Intel threw together at the last minute when they found out AMD was on track to release a true dual-core CPU. Intel was caught with their pants down, and what they did was a hack-job. They took two Pentium 4's and stuck them on the same package, covered them with a heatspreader, and called it "dual-core" so they could be first to market. The Pentium 4 was never a very efficient architecture, and was badly out-performed by the Athlon 64 CPUs from AMD when it came to games.
It doesn't perform as well as current Intel CPUs because of the older Pentium 4 architecture and because it's really not a true dual-core. The only way the two cores can communicate is through the front-side bus...which isn't nearly as efficient or fast as when the two cores share the same die and cache.
The other problem with the late Pentium 4's in the last year or two was that they produced a lot of heat (because of the high clock speed they need to run at in order to perform respectably).

Regarding the evil Pentium D
Thanks for the info on the Pentium D's Fozzik. Luckily it was a false alarm! My brother was putting together the rest of his system and chatting with a more tech savvy friend of ours who warned him off the D's before he could finalize the purchase. Core 2 Duo here we come!

Some stuff for sale (mods move if necessary)
I recently changed my plans with my build and I need to sell a few things.
1) PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750w power supply
Bought directly from PC Power & Cooling for $200+ shipping, Sell for $175 + shipping or $200 shipped, whichever is cheaper. Never used/installed, still in box.
2) EVGA 680i Mobo
Also never used, bought from Newegg.com and also I don't need this. $190 shipped. BNIB
3) Antec P180 case.
EDIT: Black P180
Out of box, not a single scratch on it. Still has protective plastic covering the entire box. I discarded the box it was in because it was too big to sit in my room itself like that. $100 shipped
*************
Everything I listed is brand new in box next to the case, which is in PERFECT condition. Nothing missing. i'll throw in some case fans in the P180 because I bought 10 of them, maybe 3 or 4, free.
I need to get rid of this stuff because 1) I actually decided to stop my entire build all together and 2) Spent that money for a down payment on a car instead. I'll get around to building a computer sometime or another, but I do not play any computer games anymore and therefore, dont need to build one.

This is not a marketing thing, Ive been helping a friend get a good monitor for his new rig he setup, and we came across this deal from newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824112003
Take a looksy. We ordered him two, and they are aboslutely AWESOME. For the price, you really cant beat it.
They also seem to have some good deals on memory, so if your neeing to upgrade, take a gander.

that's the worst part about buying computer components.. you wait and wait and watch the prices and think.. ok.. this is a good deal and make your order and the next day something you ordered goes on sale or has a rebate or something.. it never ends

Provantage has them for $87.80 again. For some reason when they go out of stock they raise the price to around $110-$120 but when they get them back in stock they lower the price again. Doesn't make sense but they seem to have the best deals on the 900 when they have them.
Got mine from them the last time they had them for $80-something. Course since I went crazy this weekend and bought a new truck I'm gonna have to put off my new computer till next years most likely

Haha, yeah I was in the same boat. Bought the case from pro-vantage, then the money for the rest of the machine went elsewhere.
Now I just have this big box taking up space in my computer room.
Provantage was good though, fast shipping, case wasn't damaged at all. Can't beat that price, either.

Just so y'all know. I was in my local Best Buy the other day and they just happened to have 2 900's in stock, $130 each. So this morning I went to provantage, added the 900 to my shopping cart, calculated the shipping cost, printed off the page, and drove myself over to Best Buy. Asked them if they would match that price...I walked out of Best Buy with a $100 Antect 900 (provantage's price + shipping, excluding tax)!!!
Worth a shot if your local best buy has some in stock!
