Default Sandisk Cruzer Mini Help

Hey Guys,

It's been awhile since I posted on the forums, but I have been reading away almost everyday staying up to date (btw Fozz nice recommendations). Ok so here's the problem:

One day last week my father decides to purchase "Battle for Middle Earth II", turns out his card GeForce 4 MX4000 isn't supported. I did some research and searched some forums to see if there was anyway he could run the game at all, someone had suggested to roll back the driver on the video card. So I download the driver and put it on my 512MB Sandisk Cruzer Mini.

All is well until I go to plug it into my dads machine to upload the driver. The light on the back of the thumb drive turns on, but doesn't show up in the disk drive screen. So I select to unplug the device from the drive, and try a different USB port. Still nothing but the light comes on. I have taken things and uploaded them to my father's comp plenty of times without any troubles using the Cruzer.

So after about 15 min of trying different USB ports, I decide to restart the computer and try again. I restart the computer and plug the device in and now nothing no light and no plug and play popup saying new hardware has been found. A bit discouraged, I decided to wait until I got home and plug it into my machine to see if it will work. Get home and try to plug it in and nothing no light no plug and play popup window.

I check the device manager and I see unknown device listed in the USB device area which can only be the Cruzer Mini. I checked all the ports and it always shows unknown device. I check the properties on the unknown device and it says there is no driver for this device. I checked the internet and found no driver for it but the one for windows 98. I even repaired windows to see if the USB drivers might have gotten deleted, however still nothing.

If you guys have any suggestions please let me know, I have some information on there that I would rather not lose.

The website doesn't list the specs, but I'm going to guess that is a DirectX/Shader version requirement. A driver change isn't going to give him hardware features he doesn't have.

As to the USB, I don't use those but it sounds like it got fragged when you put it in your dad's PC.

Normally I'm guessing that the device gives a little "Hey, here I am!" to the computer when you plug it in. If the components in the memory stick are going bad, it may no longer be announcing itself, which means the computer would have no idea what to load.

Since you know windows XP has a driver for it, you might try manually installing the device as a removable disk drive or whatever and see if you can get it working. If the computer is detecting that something is there, you should be able to get a driver married up with it through a manual process. If the memory stick can still respond to read/write requests (it may only have gone partially bad) then you could probably still use it, although it would be a little annoying.
